Managing the liberalization of Italy’s retail electricity market: a policy proposal
2017
Italy’s 2015 Annual Competition Law2 provides for phasing out electricity retail prices regulation by July 1st, 2019. Under the current regulatory framework, compliant with the EU regulations,3 all electricity customers are free to choose their preferred supplier. However, residential customer and small and medium enterprises (SMEs)4 retain a right “not to choose”, in which case they are supplied by the local distribution system operator (DSO)5 at a price set by the regulator. This (transitional) scheme, known as “maggior tutela” or “greater protection”, has been in place since July 1st, 2007 . Full liberalization of retail electricity markets is strongly advocated by the EU Commission, as …
Behavioural Consequences of P-Glycoprotein Deficiency in Mice, with Special Focus on Stress-Related Mechanisms
2012
P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an efflux transporter localised in the blood-brain barrier, limits the access of multiple xenobiotics to the central nervous system. Whether it is also implemented in the transport of the endogenous glucocorticoid corticosterone is a matter of debate. The P-gp knockout mouse model [abcb1a/b (-/-)] has been shown to differ in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. In the present study, we investigated the behaviour of abcb1a/b (-/-) and wild-type mice with respect to stress-related tests and the effects of corticosterone. Behavioural activities were assessed in the open field (OF) test for 4 days, and in the forced swimming test (FST) and tai…
Exploring the future: Runtime scenario selection for complex and time-bound decisions
2015
Abstract Scenarios are designed to support decision-makers in gaining a better understanding of the consequences of decisions. Despite their popularity in IT for Foresight, a major obstacle is the complexity of strategic decisions and the resulting multitude of scenarios. Therefore choices need to be made, which scenarios to fully work out, by which experts and in which level of detail. This paper presents an approach to support making these trade-offs between accuracy and resources spent by prioritising scenarios based on their significance for the decision even on the basis of incomplete information. This approach combines theoretical findings in decision theory with results that were eli…
The impact of multinational banking on domestic banking
2006
Post-Keynesians have made endogenous money a central argument in their theory of output. Indeed, production cannot be undertaken if access to finance, usually meaning bank credit, does not exist. Such access is needed if wages are to be paid, and inputs of production purchased. In a monetary economy, therefore, money is created at the demand of borrowers, supplied by banks.

Mobility scenarios in the Valley of the Temples
2015
The valley of the Temples in Agrigento is one the most known wonders of the ancient Greek time to be still standing is South Italy. Chosen as an emblematic location in the center of the island, it is the exemplary site used to assess the potential for electric mobility in terms of energy and environmental benefits of electricity over standard fuels. Such an assessment is performed by means of a life-cycle approach, including the use of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, the use of the standard ILCD-PEF indicators and the development of a parametric analysis investigating the impact of different electricity penetration levels in the local transports system. The results identify relevant …
Annual heating energy requirements of office buildings in a European climate
2016
Abstract The concept of implementing energy savings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has become a key element of energy policies of any industrialized country. In the civil sector and specifically, energy savings for office buildings, there are still opportunities for further enhancements related to correctly determining the air conditioning thermal requirements. However, there is a lack of simple correlations that allow a preliminary assessment for a single building or correlations that can be quickly applied at the district level. This paper proposes several simple correlations that determine the heating loads of a typical office building by only knowing the Degree-Days of a specific Eu…
Model for Evolution of a Vertical Software Industry
2009
The interaction of the primary and secondary software industries appears to follow a common pattern, which has been described in the model for evolution of a vertical software industry (Tyrvainen et al. 2008). The evolution is seen as iterating through several phases, shown in Fig. 1 and described below.
Friction stir welding of tailored joints for industrial applications
2009
Friction stir welding (FSW) is an energy efficient and environmentally "friendly" (no fumes, noise, or sparks) welding process, during which the workpieces are welded together in a solid-state joining process at a temperature below the melting point of the workpiece material under a combination of extruding and forging. Since its invention in 1991 by TWI, such process has been reaching a continuously increasing popularity among aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding industries due its capability to weld unweldable or difficult-to-weld light alloys in different joint morphologies. In this paper a wide experimental campaign is carried out in order to obtain T and lap joints characterized by d…
