When compared to laymen, dancers have enhanced processes in observation of short dance movement and listening to music. This article provides a fresh look into Walter Benjamin’s famous essay, “Artwork in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1936). Following Benjamin scholar Esther Leslie, we claim that Benjamin’s lesser-known concept of “second technique” is integral for understanding both the meaning of essay as well as mapping the political and artistic aims of the 1920’s avant-garde movements in general. The article is structured around two cases of avant-garde, both of which are central already for Benjamin, but remain somewhat under-theorized in connection to Benjamin. Maisterintutkielmani käsittelee tutkimustiedon, subjektiivisten luontokokemusten ja ympäristöeettisten pohdintojen merkitystä ja keskinäistä suhdetta taidetta ja tiedettä yhdistävässä Suojeltu aapa -hankkeessa ja hankkeen teoksissa. Olen taustaltani kuvataiteilija ja olen taiteen keinoin ottanut kantaa Sodankylän kunnan Viiankiaavan luonnonsuojelualueelle kohdistuviin kaivossuunnitelmiin. Ensimmäiset Viiankiaavan tilannetta kommentoivat teokseni tein vuonna 2012 ja vähitellen yksittäisistä teoksista kasvoi Suojeltu aapa -hanke. Tutkielman keskiössä on aapasuo. Tässä artikkelissa käsittelen kahdeksan Berliinissä asuneen suomalaislähtöisen kuvataiteilijan käsityksiä kielten merkityksestä identiteettiinsä ja taiteeseensa. Vastaan kolmeen tutkimuskysymykseen; ensinnäkin siihen, miten eri kielten käyttö on vaikuttanut taiteilijoiden identiteettiin, toisekseen siihen, miten he käyttävät kieliä visuaalisessa taiteessaan ja lopuksi siihen, mikä rooli kielellä, monikielisyydellä/limittäiskieleilyllä on heidän taiteessaan. Kesällä 2019 ja talvella 2021 kerätty aineisto koostuu kuvataiteilijoiden haastatteluista, ottamistani valokuvista taiteilijoiden työhuoneilta ja heidän töistään sekä heidän julkaisemistaan kirjoista ja nettisivuista.
