The capacity to relax and letting one's mind wander is one of the cornerstones of psychoanalysis. In cases where this capacity seems hindered, the reasons are characteristically sought from particular and specific inhibitions: what is thereby taken to be interfered is not the capacity of relaxation but only the activation of this capacity in a particular regard. In contrast to this mainstream way of thinking, Winnicott argues that the capacity for mental relaxation is a developmental achievement and presupposes a safe sense of integration. Following developments in educational discourse more broadly, learning discourses in youth sport have been shaped by outcome-based and instrumental goals of developing useful life-skills for ‘successful’ lives. Dynamic changes in media technology, society, media consumption and the economy affect the media landscape as well as the role and status of media users who are no longer passive receivers, but active media participants, and thus need to develop appropriate competence areas. This article discusses an experiment which we are conducting in the field of Finnish as a second language. We are developing an Internet-based program that learners of Finnish can use to assess their own writing skills. The program code originally comes from the DIALANG project, which is developing a diagnostic language assessment system for 14 languages for the Internet. We selected two new writing tasks for the program, and constructed related sets of benchmark performances to enable the learners to assess their own abilities.
