The Labor Day that falls on the May 1, was one of the most important events in Poland during the communist period. The celebrations were preceded by long-term preparations. Since the beginning of March, the society undertook May Day deeds. A few weeks before Labor Day, committees were formed, which ensured that the celebrations would proceed in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Committee of the PUWP. The article analyses the course of the May Day celebrations in Opole Silesia. Starting early in the morning on the Labourer's Day, propaganda slogans and reports of accomplished May Day actions were broadcast, and delegates from various workplaces, organisations and institutions gathered in order to participate in the manifestations. The main culminating point of the celebration agenda was the parade which set off after speeches delivered by the representatives of the party authorities. The parades were organised in all of the cities and all the commune centres. The parade in Opole had the largest number of participants in the region - in 1955, it gathered 50,000 people. Aside from the official part of the celebrations, Labour Day included the entertainment part as well. In the afternoon of the lst of May numerous art and sport events, as well as games, lotteries etc. were organised in Opole and in other major localities of the voivodeship. These were received with acclamation by the community, and they noted considerable turnout. For that day the authorities arranged sale of products that were difficult to purchase on a daily basis, which constituted one more attraction of May Day celebrations. Foundations of language perceptions and the role of external factors: a Norwegian case

Non-linguists' perceptions of language in use are generally considered to be strongly influenced by evaluative factors: attitudes, values and ideology. Such a perspective represents a somewhat biased approach to ordinary people's knowledge about language, which is characteristic of both sociolinguistics and its sub-branch, perceptual dialectology. This paper presents an alternative approach, which comprised interviewing 44 Norwegian informants about language spoken locally. The data from the interviews suggests that external (i.e. non-mental) factors play a prominent role in the formation of their perceptions of language. Functional, biochemical and molecular biological evidence for a possible β3-adrenoceptor in human near-term myometrium

The possible existence of a β3-adrenoceptor (β3-AR) in human near-term myometrium was investigated by in vitro functional and biochemical studies and analysis of mRNA expression. SR 59119A and SR 59104A and CGP 12177 (two selective agonists and a partial agonist, respectively, of the β3-AR), salbutamol and terbutaline (β2-AR agonists) each produced a concentration-dependent relaxation of the myometrial spontaneous contractions. There were no differences in pD2 values for the relaxing potencies of terbutaline, salbutamol, CGP 12177 and SR 59119A. The rank order for their relaxing efficacies was SR 59119A>SR 59104A>terbutaline∼salbutamol∼CGP 12177 (Emax=52±7%, 42±12% and ∼ 30% respectively). …
In Situ Study of the Effect of Naringin, Talinolol and Protein-Energy Undernutrition on Intestinal Absorption of Saquinavir in Rats

To study the potential interactions of naringin (NAR), talinolol (TAL) and protein-energy undernutrition (PEU) in the absorption process of saquinavir (SQV), perfusion experiments were performed in the small intestine of rats at different SQV concentrations. The results obtained demonstrated that SQV intestinal absorption was described by simultaneous passive diffusion (kdif = 3.44 hr) and saturable absorption (Vma = 127.31 lM ⁄ hr; Kma =1 0.50lM) together with a capacity-limited efflux (Vms = 270.53 lM ⁄ hr; Kms =2 3.44lM). The competitive inhibition constants of NAR on the SQV input and efflux processes were (IC50)a =3 .98l Ma nd(IC50)s = 5.00 lM, respectively. NAR significantly decreased…

After WWII the Polish ocean liner “Batory” operated on the route Gdynia–New York, and from 1951 to India. The captain of the ship was Jan Ćwikliński. The Ministry for Public Security accused him of having a hostile attitude towards the People’s Republic of Poland and insisted on him being removed from his position as Batory captain. In the spring of 1953 the ship underwent a technical check-up at a shipyard in Great Britain. In the mean-time it was rumoured that the captain was to be arrested upon his return to Poland on suspicion of espionage.
