Review of the genusiLanchnophorus/i(Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Rhyparochromidae) with description of three new species and other nomenclatural changes.

2017

The generic name Lanchnophorus Reuter, 1887, deemed for a long time to be unavailable as incorrect original spelling of Lachnophorus (in fact Lachnophorus Distant, 1903 is an unjustified emendation of the former), is restored as a valid name of the genus. Lachnesthus Bergroth, 1915, syn. nov. (new name for the preoccupied Lachnophorus Distant, 1903) is considered junior synonym of Lanchnophorus. The following nomenclatural changes are proposed: Lanchnophorus flavus (Scudder, 1971) comb. nov. = Lachnesthus chinai Scudder, nomen nudum; Lanchnophorus guttulatus Reuter, 1887, comb. restit. = Lachnophorus albidomaculatus Distant, 1913, syn. nov. = Lachnesthus rodriguezensis China, 1925, syn. nov…

Animacy-based predictions in language comprehension are robust: contextual cues modulate but do not nullify them

2015

Couldn't a humble coconut hurt a gardener? At least in the first instance, the brain seems to assume that it should not: we perceive inanimate entities such as coconuts as poor event instigators ("Actors"). Ideally, entities causing a change in another entity should be animate and this assumption not only influences event perception but also carries over to language comprehension. We present three auditory event-related brain potential (ERP) studies on the processing of inanimate and animate subjects and objects in simple transitive sentences in Tamil. ERP responses were measured at the second argument (event participant) in all three studies. Experiment 1 employed all possible animacy comb…

Competing economies of worth in a multiagency music and reconciliation partnership: The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009-2018)

2020

The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009–2018) was launched to ‘stimulate the performing arts in Sri Lanka, thus contributing to the peace and reconciliation process’ in the aftermath of almost three decades of civil war between the Tamil minority and Sinhala majority populations of the island. Funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project had many local and international stakeholders, from artists and civil society organisations, to government institutions, to a general public eager for enrichment through arts and culture. But despite high engagement and financial investment, the achievements of the SLNMC were generally unremarkable and short-term. This article argue…

Huomioita orientalistisesta muinaisuudesta : hegemoninen eurooppalainen diskurssi tamileista Etelä-Intiassa.

2007

Artikkelin tarkoitus on tarkastella Etelä-Intian Tamil Nadun maaseudulla sijaitsevan monikansallisen Auroville-yhteisön suhdetta ympäröivään tamilikulttuuriin. Auroville on lähinnä eurooppalaisten, amerikkalaisten ja intialaisten asuttama yhteisö, joka perustettiin 1960-luvun lopulla kokeilumielessä toteuttamaan ihmisykseyden ideaalia, jonka mukaan motivoituneet yhteisön jäsenet voivat erilaisista kulttuuritaustoistaan huolimatta elää yhdessä harmoniassa ja toisiaan inspiroivalla tavalla. Aurovillen läheisyydessä sijaitsee lukuisia tamilikyliä, joista yhteisö saa huomattavan osan työvoimastaan. Tamileiden ja aurovilleläisten suhde onkin yhteisössä jatkuvan keskustelun ja neuvottelun aiheena…

2015
