The Profiles of Body Image Associate With Changes in Depression Among Participants in Dance Movement Therapy Group
2020
This mixed-methods study analyzed the body image quality of 143 patients with depression. The participants received a 20 × 75 min dance movement therapy (DMT) group treatment, sessions twice a week. Body Image Assessment (BIA) was the data collection tool, with pre-, post-, and 3-mos follow-up assessments. Pre-intervention body image quality characteristics were low energy and activity levels, discomfort, shame and disgust toward the body, tension in social interactions. On the BIA scores, a statistical method of Latent Profile Analysis was utilized to identify participant profiles in the data. The two identified profiles were participant with initial negative body image and participant wit…
Dance movement therapy in the treatment of depression : change in body image and mood - a clinical practice based study
2018
This dissertation includes four studies of the use of dance movement therapy (DMT) in a group form in the treatment of depression at a psychiatric outpatient clinic. DMT is based on exploring the embodied experience in the here and now in the encounter between patient(s), therapist and the dance/movement. DMT is a method to develop awareness of embodiment. This dissertation presents data from ten DMT groups, involving 62 patients who participated in and completed DMT groups during the years 2007-2013 at one psychiatric outpatient clinic. The age range of the participants was 21-61 years. To allow comparisons between DMT and treatment as usual (TAU), a control group of 12 patients was part o…
Dance movement therapy for depressed clients : Profiles of the level and changes in depression
2021
This research identified participant profiles in level and changes in depression among working age (18–64 years old) clients (N = 137) diagnosed with depression, who participated in a 20-session dance movement therapy (DMT) intervention. Using Latent Profile Analysis Mild, sharply reducing depression (9%), Mild, reducing depression (58%) and Severe, reducing depression (33%) profiles were established, using Beck Depression Inventory scores gathered at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up points. At the pre-intervention point, being in full-time work was related to the Mild, sharply reducing depression profile. Being on a disability pension, having a history of one's own or a c…
Change in body image among depressed adult outpatients after a dance movement therapy group treatment
2018
This study reports on the body image of depressed psychiatric outpatients, and the impact thereon of a dance movement therapy (DMT) group. Body image is perceived as a tri-partite construct consisting of image-properties, body-self, and body memory. Depressed patients in an outpatient mental health service participated in a DMT group treatment consisting of twelve 90-min long sessions in groups of 4–7 patients. Patients (N = 18) responded to a structured Body Image Assessment (BIA) before and after the treatment. Initially, the depressed patients’ body image was characterized by fragmentation, distortions, and shallowness of body awareness. The DMT group treatment aimed to offer the patient…
Emotions in motion - Tunteet Liikkeessä (TuLi)
2012
Depression is a highly prevalent mood disorder which impairs a person’s social skills and quality of life, and affects their ability to recognise and express emotions. Here, we describe the first study to investigate how depression affects expression of emotions perceived in music through spontaneous, expressive body movement. Central to this study is the use of a Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) intervention. Specifically, we investigate how depression and possible co-morbid anxiety affect a person’s ability to express emotions perceived in music through spontaneous movement, regulate their emotions through music and music related movement, and whether DMT can improve these skills in depressed…
2012
Tutkimuksen kohde on Panu Varstalan tanssiteos Onerva. Tutkimus käyttää teoriapohjanaan Gèrard Genetten transtekstuaalisuuden termistöä ja soveltaa sitä tanssiteoksen tulkintaan. Eräänä tavoitteena on kokeilla, kuinka tanssiteos taipuu kirjallisuudentutkimuksen teorian kautta analysoitavaksi. Genetten teoriaa on otettu käyttöön muun muassa siksi, että Onervan nimi ja muut siihen liittyvät tekstit osoittavat selvästi viittaussuhteiden olemassaolon. Transtekstuaalisuuden muodoista tarkastellaan paikallista intertekstuaalisuutta eli suoria sitaatteja, para- ja metatekstejä eli itse teosta ympäröiviä muita tekstejä, hypotekstuaalisuutta eli teoskokonaisuuden transformaatiosuhdetta toisen teksti…
Diary of an anxious soul and how pole dancing saved me : an autoethnography
2017
Þórhallsdóttir, Sveindís. (2017). Diary of an anxious soul and how pole dancing saved me: An autoethnography. Master’s thesis in sport and exercise psychology. Faculty of Sport Sciences. University of Jyväskylä. 150p. In this thesis, I use narrative reflection from an evocative autoethnographic standpoint to explore the multifaceted interaction between stereotypes, norms and values and their effect on my perception of my own worth, my battle with generalized anxiety disorder and with my cognitive dissonance fused frustration related to discovering and enjoying a highly stigmatized recreational activity – recreational pole dancing. The text features analysis of important events in my life in…

Embodied Meter Revisited : Entrainment, Musical Content, and Genre in Music-Induced Movement
2022
Previous research has shown that humans tend to embody musical meter at multiple beat levels during spontaneous dance. This work that been based on identifying typical periodic movement patterns, or eigenmovements, and has relied on time-domain analyses. The current study: 1) presents a novel method of using time-frequency analysis in conjunction with group-level tensor decomposition; 2) compares its results to time-domain analysis, and 3) investigates how the amplitude of eigenmovements depends on musical content and genre. Data comprised three-dimensional motion capture of 72 participants’ spontaneous dance movements to 16 stimuli including eight different genres. Each trial was subjected…
