Chimney and Periscope Grafts Observed Over 2 Years After Their Use to Revascularize 169 Renovisceral Branches in 77 Patients With Complex Aortic Aneu…
2013
Purpose: To evaluate the performance of periscope and/or chimney grafts (CPGs) in the endovascular treatment of pararenal or thoracoabdominal aneurysms using off-the-shelf devices. Methods: Between February 2002 and August 2012, 77 consecutive patients (62 men; mean age 7369 years) suffering from pararenal aortic (n¼55), thoracoabdominal (n¼16), or arch to visceral artery aneurysms (n¼6) were treated with aortic stent-graft implantation requiring chimney and/or periscope grafts to maintain side branch perfusion. CPGs were planned in advance and were not used as bailout. A standardized follow-up protocol including computed tomographic angiography, laboratory testing, and clinical examination…
The Metabolic Syndrome and Its Relationship to Hypertensive Target Organ Damage
2007
High blood pressure is often associated with various metabolic abnormalities, including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated plasma glucose, and insulin resistance, which are the main features of the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is extremely common worldwide. This high prevalence is of considerable concern because several studies suggest that the metabolic syndrome carries an increased risk for cardiovascular events. Several lines of evidence seem to indicate that the metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased prevalence of preclinical cardiovascular and renal changes, such as left ventricular hypertrophy, microalbuminuria, impaired aortic elasticity, and early ca…
UPBRINGING AND LEARNING UNITY AS A SOURCE FOR DEVELOPING TEACHERS' EMOTIONAL RESPONSIVENESS
2020
In the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the scientific research in Europe started focusing more on the problems of upbringing. Pedagogical science was no exception, and also started raising questions regarding upbringing including both the teaching/learning and the upbringing/self-education processes in pedagogical activities and in the education system as a whole. The united way in which the teaching/learning, upbringing/self-education work is conducted at educational institutions reflects the professionalism of the teacher. The study reveals the necessity and importance of upbringing and unity in teaching work for the pedagogical processes of the 21st…
The deubiquitinase USP11 is a versatile and conserved regulator of autophagy
2021
Autophagy is a major cellular quality control system responsible for the degradation of proteins and organelles in response to stress and damage to maintain homeostasis. Ubiquitination of autophagy-related proteins or regulatory components is important for the precise control of autophagy pathways. Here, we show that the deubiquitinase ubiquitin-specific protease 11 (USP11) restricts autophagy and that KO of USP11 in mammalian cells results in elevated autophagic flux. We also demonstrate that depletion of the USP11 homolog H34C03.2 in Caenorhabditis elegans triggers hyperactivation of autophagy and protects the animals against human amyloid-β peptide 42 aggregation-induced paralysis. USP11…
Towards therapeutic gene delivery to human cancer cells : targeting and entry of baculovirus
2008
Geeniterapia on yksi tulevaisuuden hoitomuodoista taistelussa syöpää vastaan. Kohdentaminen on erityisen tärkeää syövän hoidossa, jotta hoito vaikuttaisi pääasiassa pahanlaatuisiin soluihin.Mäkelä kehitti tutkimuksessaan syöpäsoluihin kohdentuvia bakulovirusperäisiä geeninsiirtovektoreita. Hän tutki myös viruksen sisäänmenomekanismeja ja kulkeutumista kohdesoluissa.- Hyönteisiä infektoiva bakulovirus on luontaisesti vaaraton ihmisille. Se on helpo…
Chemical Proteomics-Guided Identification of a Novel Biological Target of the Bioactive Neolignan Magnolol
2019
Understanding the recognition process between bioactive natural products and their specific cellular receptors is of key importance in the drug discovery process. In this outline, some potential targets of Magnolol, a natural bioactive compound, have been identified by proteomic approaches. Among them, Importin-β1 has been considered as the most relevant one. A direct binding between Magnolol and this nuclear chaperone has been confirmed by DARTS and molecular docking, while its influence on Importin-β1 translocation has been evaluated by in vitro assays.
Pre-release risk assessment of the egg-parasitoid Gryon pennsylvanicum for classical biological control of Leptoglossus occidentalis.
2013
Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann (Heteroptera: Coreidae) is a North American conifer seed pest that was accidentally introduced to Europe. In the Mediterranean area, it threatens the production of Pinus pinea Linna- eus seeds. The egg-parasitoid Gryon pennsylvanicum (Ashmead) (Hymenop- tera: Platygastridae), the main natural enemy in the native range of L. occidentalis, was imported from British Columbia to Italy. Pre-release risk assessments were made under quarantine conditions by no-choice tests conducted with na€ıve and experienced G. pennsylvanicum offering single eggs of target and non-target species for varying exposure times (1, 4, 48 h). G. pennsylvanicum successfully parasitize…
Densité et mobilité des poissons sous la glace, sur une zone de pêche à la senne de deux lacs finlandais, par écho-intégration.
2000
The density and movements of fish under ice were studied with single-beam mobile surveys and fixed location split-beam surveys, as well as exploratory fishing in winter-seining areas of two shallow Finnish lakes during winter 1999. Fish schooled near the bottom during the day but the schools dispersed and fish ascended at night. Single and split-beam target strength distributions corresponded fairly closely with the length distribution of seine catch samples. Estimated fish densities were greater at night than in daylight. The swimming speed of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) was 0.18 m·s -1 in daylight and 0.36 m·s -1 at night. The corresponding figures for vendace (Coregonus albula) were 0.11-0…
Efficient gene therapy based targeting system for the treatment of inoperable tumors
2012
Background A considerable percentage of tumors are not amenable to surgery. We have designed a simple and powerful targeting system that offers an alternative option for the multi-component pre-targeting strategies used clinically. This targeting system can be used for any type of solid tumors independent of the tumor type, thereby omitting the need to engineer unique antibodies for each specific application or tumour type. In the present study, we show the expression of a chimeric fusion protein, which contains the low-density lipoprotein receptor transmembrane domains and avidin, after local gene transfer and its ability to bind biotinylated compounds in vivo. Methods Semliki Forest virus…
Identification of Stress Associated microRNAs in
2019
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most important crops around the world and also a model plant to study response to stress. High-throughput sequencing was used to analyse the microRNA (miRNA) profile of tomato plants undergoing five biotic and abiotic stress conditions (drought, heat, P. syringae infection, B. cinerea infection, and herbivore insect attack with Leptinotarsa decemlineata larvae) and one chemical treatment with a plant defence inducer, hexanoic acid. We identified 104 conserved miRNAs belonging to 37 families and we predicted 61 novel tomato miRNAs. Among those 165 miRNAs, 41 were stress-responsive. Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to valida…
