Studies on the determinants of migration and the spatial concentration of labour

This thesis consists of five empirical studies which seek to understand the processes behind interregional migration decisions and the spatial concentration of labour. The empirical studies are preceded by an introductory chapter that, among other topics, discusses spatial concentration in Finland between 1980 and 2000, and surveys prior evidence on the determinants of migration. The thesis mainly utilises Finnish longitudinal population census data from 1993?1996. A variety of advanced microeconometric methods are used in the modelling of the migration phenomenon to ensure robustness and the reliability of the results. Subjective health literacy among school-aged children

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore Finnish adolescents’ subjective health literacy (HL) in association to school achievement, learning difficulties, educational aspirations, and family affluence. Design/methodology/approach Nationally representative data were collected in Finland as a part of the international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. The respondents consisted in total of 3,833 adolescents (7th and 9th graders) from 359 schools. Odotettujen tulojen tiedetään vaihtelevan koulutusasteiden ja -alojen välillä, mutta kuinka suuria erot tarkemmin ottaen ovat ja miten erot ovat kehittyneet viime vuosina? Artikkelissa pyritään antamaan vastauksia näihin ysymyksiin Tilastokeskuksen yksilötason rekisteriaineistojen analyysin avulla. Tulosten mukaan parhaassa työiässä olevien 36–45-vuotiaiden suomalaisten koulutukselleen saama tuotto on pysynyt keskimäärin korkeana 1990-luvun puolivälin jälkeen ikäryhmän koulutustason merkittävästä kasvusta huolimatta. Is personality related to permanent earnings? Evidence using a twin design

Using twin survey combined with register-based panel data on labor market outcomes, the authors examine the association between personality characteristics and long-term earnings among prime working-age individuals. The long-term earnings were measured over the 1990–2008 period. The sample contains 4,642 twin pairs, of which 53% are females. In contrast to previous studies, this paper uses the within-twin dimension of the data to control for shared family background and confounding genetic factors. Sosiaalinen pääoma ja yksilötason tulokehitys Suomessa

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelemme yksilön sosiaalisista verkostoista muodostuvan sosiaalisen pääoman yhteyttä yksilötason tulokehitykseen. Analyysimme perustuvat vuoden 1986 elinolotutkimukseen osallistuneisiin 20–44 vuotiaisiin työllisiin ja rekisteritietoihin heidän palkkatuloistaan vuosilta 1987–1997. Tutkimuksessa erottelemme toisistaan sitovan ja silloittavan sosiaalisen pääoman muodot. Sitovan sosiaalisen pääoman mittarimme perustuu yksilön mahdollisuuteen saada apua verkostoistaan erilaisissa arkielämän tilanteissa. Economic Costs of Obesity in Europe

This chapter summarizes the evidence on the indirect costs of obesity that result from adverse labour market outcomes (i.e., earnings and employment losses) at the individual level. We focus on empirical evidence covering European countries emphasizing the most recent studies in this field. Research has established three key empirical observations. The first fact is that there is a negative link between excess weight and various labour market outcomes. Obesity is linked to significantly lower earnings, lower levels of employment and higher probability of entering sick leave or exiting from paid employment through disability pension. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli tarkastella koululuokkien työrauhaan vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Aineistona käytettiin Niilo Mäki Instituutin Prokoulu-projektin tutkimusaineistoa. Vastemuuttujana käytettiin oppilaan arvioimaa luokan työrauhaa. Selittäviksi muuttujiksi asetettiin aiemman tutkimustiedon perusteella oppilaan arvioita erilaisista sosiaalisista suhteista ja käyttäytymiseen liittyvistä asioista, luokan opettajan ominaisuuksia ja arvioita koulun toimintakulttuurista sekä yleisiä luokkaan liittyviä ominaisuuksia.
