We investigated the longitudinal associations of blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and arterial stiffness among children. Arterial stiffening has been repeatedly shown to be a cardiovascular mortality predictor and can be observed early in childhood. As such, it is crucial to understand whether a child’s blood pressure, fitness level, and body composition can predict early signs of atherosclerosis and arterial stiffening. Lynch syndrome (LS) is the most common hereditary cancer syndrome. Early diagnosis improves prognosis and reduces health care costs, through existing cancer surveillance methods. The problem is finding and diagnosing the cancer predisposing genetic condition. The current workup involves a complex array of tests that combines family cancer history and clinical phenotypes with tumor characteristics and sequencing data, followed by a challenging task to interpret the found variant(s). Matilaisen väitöstutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää bakulovirusta käytettäväksi geeniterapiaan syövän hoitoon. Bakulovirus on hyönteisvirus ja siten turvallisempi vaihtoehto kokeellisessa geeniterapiassa tällä hetkellä käytettäville patogeenisille viruksille tai niiden muunnelmille.Matilainen tutki myös virusten ja käytettyjen kohdennuspeptidien sisääntulomekanismeja ihmisen syöpäsoluihin. Tutkimuksessa löydettiin mahdollisesti bakuloviruksen uusi vaihtoehtoinen sisääntuloreitti. Tutkielmassa käydään läpi neljän yleisimmän kiihdytinpohjaisen sädehoitomuodon toimintaa ja historiaa. Sädehoitoja tehdään yleisimmin fotoni-, elektroni- tai protonisäteilyllä. Lisäksi syöpähoitoja tehdään boorineutronikaappaushoitoina. Fotonisäteily on nykypäivänä lähes aina röntgensäteilyä, mutta myös gammasäteilyä on käytetty. Lopuksi pohdin eri hoitomuotojen hyviä ja huonoja puolia sekä eri hoitomuotojen tulevaisuutta.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia yksilölle merkitykselliset musiikinkuuntelukokemukset kroonisen (fyysisen) sairauden eri vaiheissa ovat ja mitä musiikin kuuntelemisella tavoitellaan. Merkityksellisten kokemusten kautta pyrittiin luomaan kuvaa musiikinkuuntelun itsehoidollisesta luonteesta. Huomio kiinnitettiin siihen, millä tavalla yksilö voi itse vaikuttaa omaan olotilaansa ja millaisessa roolissa musiikki voi tässä yhteydessä toimia. Tutkimukseen valittiin henkilöitä, joilla on jokin fyysinen pitkäaikaissairaus, ja jotka kokevat musiikinkuuntelun olleen merkittävällä tavalla osana sairauteen liittyvien kokemusten käsittelyä.
