Structural characterization of a-plane Zn1−xCdxO (0 < x <0.085) thin films grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy.

2006

Zn1−xCdxO(11math0) films have been grown on (01math2) sapphire (r–plane) substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. A 800-nm-thick ZnO buffer, deposited prior to the alloy growth, helps to prevent the formation of pure CdO. A maximum uniform Cd incorporation of 8.5 at. % has been determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Higher Cd contents lead to the coexistence of Zn1−xCdxO alloys of different compositions within the same film. The near band-edge photoluminescence emission shifts gradually to lower energies as Cd is incorporated and reaches 2.93 eV for the highest Cd concentration (8.5 at. %). The lattice deformation, due to Cd incorporation, has been described using a n…

Axisymmetric solutions for a chemotaxis model of Multiple Sclerosis

2018

In this paper we study radially symmetric solutions for our recently proposed reaction–diffusion–chemotaxis model of Multiple Sclerosis. Through a weakly nonlinear expansion we classify the bifurcation at the onset and derive the amplitude equations ruling the formation of concentric demyelinating patterns which reproduce the concentric layers observed in Balò sclerosis and in the early phase of Multiple Sclerosis. We present numerical simulations which illustrate and fit the analytical results.

Dynamic deformation of migratory efferent lymph-derived cells ?trapped? in the inflammatory microcirculation

2002

The cellular immune response depends on the delivery of lymphocytes from the lymph node to the peripheral site of antigenic challenge. During their passage through the inflammatory microcirculaton, the migratory cells can become transiently immobilized or "trapped" in small caliber vessels. In this report, we used intravital microscopy and temporal area mapping to define the dynamic deformation of efferent lymph-derived mononuclear cells trapped in the systemic inflammatory microcirculation. Mononuclear cells obtained from the efferent lymph draining the oxazolone-stimulated microcirculation were labeled with fluorescent dye and reinjected into the feeding arterial circulation. Intravital v…

Weyers acrodental dysostosis in a family.

1984

A four generation family with postaxial polydactyly of hands and feet and dental anomalies is reported. Lower and upper incisors were abnormal in shape and number. Additional findings were prominent ear anthelices, hypoplastic and dysplastic nails and mild shortness of stature. Inheritance was dominant with variable expression. It is proposed that the family presents the syndrome of acrofacial dysostosis described by Weyers in 1952. To differentiate it from other acrofacial dysostoses, we suggest naming the condition acrodental dysostosis.

Polyglutamine toxicity induces rod photoreceptor division, morphological transformation or death in Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 mouse retina

2010

In neurodegenerative disorders caused by polyglutamine (polyQ) expansion, polyQ toxicity is thought to trigger a linear cascade of successive degenerative events leading to neuronal death. To understand how neurons cope with polyQ toxicity, we studied a Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 (SCA7) mouse which expresses polyQ-expanded ATXN7 only in rod photoreceptors. We show that in response to polyQ toxicity, SCA7 rods go through a range of radically different cell fates, including apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death, cell migration, morphological transformation into a round cell or, most remarkably, cell division. The temporal profile of retinal remodeling indicates that some degenerative pathways …
