Phytosociological remarks on residual woodlands of Laurus nobilis in Sicily

2010

A phytosociological study was done of Laurus nobilis woodlands in Sicily. The analysis, based on 18 relevés, supports the definition of a new syntaxon (Acantho mollis-Lauretum nobilis ass. nov.), considered as a vicariant of similar vegetation aspects described in other Mediterranean areas (Iberian and Italian peninsulas). The study mainly includes some unpublished sites where polycormic individuals of laurel, sometimes reaching 13-15 meters in height, dominates the tree layer. This vegetation is also characterized by some laurophyllous species (Hedera helix, Rhamnus alaternus, Smilax aspera and sometimes Viburnum tinus) and lianas (Rubia peregrina var. longifolia, Asparagus acutifolius, Ta…

2015

This thesis presents a comparative study examining the practices of campus sustainability in Higher Education Sectors between Hong Kong and Finland. Campus sustainability is a trend during the last decade as a result of numerous declarations and meetings for sustainable development in Higher education all over the world. In this thesis, the investigated areas are focused on environmental sustainability and Social sustainability. This study used the content analysis method to analyze public available documents from the selected fifteen Higher education institutions in Hong Kong and Finland. The first stage was a description of the current overall situations of campus sustainability in the tw…

SAHA induces apoptosis in hepatoma cells and synergistically interacts with the proteasome inhibitor Bortezomib.

2007

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represent a promising group of anticancer agents. This paper shows that the HDAC inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) stimulated at 5-10 microM apoptosis in human hepatoma HepG2 and Huh6 cells, but was ineffective in primary human hepatocytes (PHH). In HepG2 cells SAHA induced the extrinsic apoptotic pathway, increasing the expression of both FasL and FasL receptor and causing the activation of caspase-8. Moreover, SAHA enhanced the level of Bim proteins, stimulated alternative splicing of the Bcl-X transcript with the expression of the proapoptotic Bcl-Xs isoform, induced degradation of Bid into the apoptotic factor t-Bid and dephosphorylat…

Bortezomib: a new pro-apoptotic agent in cancer treatment.

2010

Bortezomib is a proteasome inhibitor. It targets the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway with subsequent inhibition of the degradation of proteins involved in cell cycle regulation and cancer cell survival. The best known molecular mechanism concerns the inhibition of IkappaB breakdown and the related stabilization of NFkappaB, thus preventing its translocation to the nucleus for the activation of downstream pathways. Bortezomib is the only drug in this class which has been approved for clinical use. It has shown an efficient antitumor effect in a phase III clinical trial (APEX) involving relapsed multiple myeloma patients. Response rate, time to progression and overall survival have been improved…

Dual regulation of SPI1/PU.1 transcription factor by heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) during macrophage differentiation of monocytes

2014

International audience; : In addition to their cytoprotective role in stressful conditions, heat shock proteins (HSPs) are involved in specific differentiation pathways, e.g. we have identified a role for HSP90 in macrophage differentiation of human peripheral blood monocytes exposed to Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (M-CSF). Here, we show that deletion of the main transcription factor involved in heat shock gene regulation, heat shock factor 1 (HSF1), affects M-CSF-driven differentiation of mouse bone marrow cells. HSF1 transiently accumulates in the nucleus of human monocytes undergoing macrophage differentiation, including M-CSF-treated peripheral blood monocytes and phorbol ester-…

Bioactivity of well-defined green tea extracts in multicellular tumor spheroids.

2002

The effect of green tea extracts (GTE) of a reproducible, well-defined composition on cellular viability, proliferation, and antioxidant defense was investigated in multicellular spheroids derived from WiDr human colon adenocarcinoma cells. The maximum GTE concentration investigated, i.e. 100 micro g GTE/ml, was equivalent to the plasma concentration commonly measured in humans drinking 6-10 cups of green tea per day. This GTE concentration lead to a substantial retardation of spheroid volume growth with diameters reaching only half the size of untreated aggregates. Flow cytometric analysis and immunocytochemistry showed an enhanced accumulation of cells in G2/M and in the non-proliferating…

Cell-cell and cell-collagen interactions influence gelatinase production by human breast-carcinoma cell line 8701-BC

1995

We previously produced evidence that the human mammary-carcinoma cell line 8701-BC expresses several metalloproteinases (MMP-1, -2, -9, and -10) and their tissue inhibitors. In order to obtain a better understanding of the environmental control over gelatinolytic activities, we have tested the enzyme production of 8701-BC cells, at time intervals after plating on different collagen substrates, i.e., types I, III, IV, V and OF/LB, used as films in culture dishes. Proteinase activities, released in the conditioned culture media, were tested by zymography on SDS-PAGE, and by quantificative analyses, using 14C carboxy-methylated transferrin as substrate in a liquid incubation medium. Enzymatic …

The DNA damage-induced decrease of Bcl-2 is secondary to the activation of apoptotic effector caspases.

2003

Apoptosis induced by DNA-damaging agents or radiation mainly proceeds through death receptor-independent caspase activation. The release of mitochondrial apoptogenic proteins, such as cytochrome c, into the cytoplasm leading to Apaf1-dependent activation of caspase-9 is a key event in this pathway. The permeability of the mitochondrial outer membrane is regulated by the various pro- and antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, and it is thought that DNA damage triggers apoptosis through the downregulation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2. Using murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) deficient and proficient in Apaf1, we show that DNA-damaging agents and radiation lead to a decline in Bcl-2 protein only in wt…
