Comparing male and female students’ self-efficacy and self-regulation skills in two undergraduate mathematics course contexts
2018
International audience; Students' efficacy beliefs have a positive influence on students' academic achievement and retention, especially for female students. These beliefs are closely linked to students' ability to regulate their learning. In this quantitative study, students' self-efficacy and self-regulation of learning are compared in two university mathematics courses that differ in content but also in their pedagogical setting: one is a more traditional lecture-based course, and the other course is taught with the Extreme Apprenticeship (XA) method. The analysis is based on the same cohort of students in the two contexts (N=91). The results suggest that students have higher self-effica…
The implications of teachers’ implicit theories for moral education: A case study from Finland
2017
Implicit theories concerning the malleability of human qualities are known to have a powerful impact on motivation and learning, but their role in moral education is an under-researched topic. In this qualitative case study, we examined the impact of implicit theories on four Finnish teachers’ practices of teaching morally and in teaching morality. The data include preliminary and stimulated recall interviews (STR) as well as classroom observations. Our results demonstrate the multiple ways in which teachers’ implicit beliefs are communicated to students and influence teacher’s interpretations and endeavors to educate the ethical capabilities of students. The study provides evidence for the…
Students' usage patterns of video recorded lectures in an undergraduate mathematics course
2018
International audience; It is customary for some universities to offer recordings of live lectures to students. Whether this improves learning and academic performance is debated in the literature. As with most technology, correct usage can lead to increased academic performance, but there are also usage patterns that can be considered counter productive, especially for learning mathematics. In order to investigate patterns in students' usage of such online recorded live lectures, we analyze log files from a server holding the recordings of an undergraduate mathematics course. This poster presents results from the statistical analysis and discusses some of the usage patterns found in light …
Who am I? : the teacher identity construction of student teachers
2015
Becoming interested during teacher education
2018
In this article we examine first-year student teachers’ possibilities to become interested in professional issues in teacher education. We study the phenomenon of becoming interested among first-year student teachers via three different kinds of data. We analysed our data through John Dewey’s definition of interest, where a person has an interest if s/he is actively keen on some object that has personal meaning for her/him. According to our data, student teachers adopt an object of interest that teacher educators provide. Learners found it difficult to find the objects of interests by themselves, and it was exceptional for them to find personal meaning and an active state of interest. This …
Oppimisen paikat ilmiölähtöisellä kurssilla : luokanopettajaopiskelijat mielen hyvinvoinnin digitaalista lukutaitoa tutkimassa
2019
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, millaisia ammatillisen kehittymisen kannalta merkityksellisiä oppimisen paikkoja rakentui luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden ilmiölähtöisellä kurssilla, jossa tutkittavana ilmiönä oli mielen hyvinvoinnin digitaalinen lukutaito. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 38 opiskelijan päiväkirjoista ja kurssin loppukirjoitelmista. Tulokset osoittavat neljä pääasiallista oppimisen paikkaa: käsitekarttatehtävät, artikkelien lukeminen, mielen hyvinvointia tukevien digitaalisten ratkaisujen arviointi opiskelijaryhmässä ja kouluvierailut. Ammatillinen kehittyminen osoittautui moniulotteiseksi prosessiksi, jossa oli monesti läsnä yhtä aikaa monenlaisia asiantuntijuuden elementtejä. Etenkin a…
Student teachers' questioning behaviour which elicit conceptual explanation from students
2016
Getting students to explain their thinking is one of the big challenges in teachers’ work. Previous studies have analysed teacher questioning by focusing on amounts of different types of questions. In this study, I use questioning diagrams to see how questioning develops during the lessons. The data includes video recordings of student teachers’ mathematics lessons in secondary and upper secondary school. The data is analysed by constructing questioning diagram for each student teacher and locating conceptual explanations given by students. The lessons which included largest amount of conceptual explanations are further studied. In these lessons the student teachers had lengthy discussions …
Tracking student teachers' technology-enhanced collaborative problem solving: Combining objective assessment data with subjective verbal reporting
2016
In spite of increasing interest, technology-enhanced formative assessment practices reflecting 21st century skills are not yet much studied, particularly in teacher education context. Also, studies that combine both objective and subjective data around these practices are still rare. This study responds to these challenges in exploration of student teachers’ collaborative problem solving (CPS) processes. Relevant events in CPS tasks are tracked through process data acquired via ATC21S™ portal, and complemented with students’ interpretations of these processes as cued retrospective reports. The broader aim is to provide student teachers with hands-on experiences of using novel, technology-en…

Modèle d'explication de l'issue des réformes des politiques publiques en Afrique sub-saharienne : Illustration avec la politique des enseignants cont…
2010
African countries' political arena is witnessing major changes due to the involvement of new political actors in the public policy making process (donors, political parties, civil society). In the past, the formulation of policies was a reflection of the central authority's will. Nowadays, governments are confronted with more resistance when adopting reforms. This paper laborates a model that describes the policy process in African countries and shows how new actors can influence the designing of the reform to their advantage. The model predicts that government success or failure in designing a reform according to its will is a function of the adoption pattern chosen and the ability of the …
