Effect of potential antidotes on the acute toxicity of acrylonitrile

Rats were intoxicated with lethal doses of acrylonitrile by different routes of application, and the effect of potential antidotes was studied. The cyanide antidotes 4-dimethylaminophenol plus thiosulfate showed some protective effect only after oral but not after i.p. or inhalatory acrylonitrile application. Of the sulfhydryl compounds cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, cysteamine and diethyldithiocarbamate the two antidotes cysteine and, to some lesser extent, N-acetylcysteine proved especially effective. Cysteine, at a dose of 200 mg/kg (i.p.), prevented the lethal effect of 100 mg/kg acrylonitrile (i.p.) even when given 2 h after the acrylonitrile dose. From these experiments a tentative sched…

Successful laparoscopic management of congenital diaphragmatic relaxation: A case report

Highlights • We describe a case report of congenital Diaphragmatic relaxation treated with totally laparoscopic plication of the left hemidiaphragm with nonresorbable sutures. • In our case report the diaphragmatic relaxation seemed to be congenital and the laparoscopic approach resulted the most appropriate technique to obtain the repositioning of abdominal organs and diaphragmatic placation. • A brief review of literature was performed to identify outcomes and potentially surgical advantages of laparoscopic approach for diaphragmatic relaxation. Laparoscopic approach can only be practiced in selected cases.

This study discusses a teaching experience that has been taking place at the School of Economics and Business at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since the academic year 2012-2013. We implement a self-evaluation mechanism: students working on group projects are required to deliver a joint declaration in which they asses their individual participation in the accomplishment of the joint task. The importance of this device is twofold. On the one hand, it reduces conflictivity among team members and, on the other hand, it delivers quantitative elements to the lecturer for grading the individual participation to the group report. Judy Chicago y los orígenes del arte feminista en Norteamérica

Considerada una de las pioneras del Arte Feminista en Estados Unidos, empezó a trabajar a mediados de los años sesenta dentro del Minimalismo. En 1970 pone en marcha un programa de arte feminista en la Universidad Estatal de California y en 1971 funda en compañía de Miriam Schapiro otro proyecto artístico de similar orientación en el Instituto de Artes de California. El estudio pretende reconstruir la trayectoria de esta artista analizando las obras más importantes.
