SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip array profiling of tears from patients with dry eye.
2005
Protein and peptides in tears play an important role in ocular surface diseases. In previous studies, changes have been demonstrated in the electrophoretic protein profiles of patients with dry eye. The purpose of this work was to determine the usefulness of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) ProteinChip Array (Ciphergen Biosystems, Inc., Fremont, CA) technology for the automated analysis of proteins and peptides in tear fluid.Patients with dry eye (DRY, n = 88) and healthy subjects (CTRL, n = 71) were examined. Their tear proteins were analyzed using SELDI-TOF-MS ProteinChip Arrays with three different chromatographic surfaces (CM10…

Entrapment of Phenytoin into Microspheres of Oleaginous Materials: Process Development and in Vitro Evaluation of Drug Release
1997
AbstractA novel multiparticulate preparation of the antiepileptic agent phenytoin (1) was developed and evaluated in vitro. The preparation consists of gastroresistant microparticulate drug delivery system formulated with oleaginous material (lipospheres) to minimize unwanted effects of l on gastric apparatus. The drug was dispersed in a spherical micromatrix consisting of a mixture of stearyl alcohol and glycerol esters of various fatty acids. The best mixture to obtain discrete, reproducible, free-flowing lipospheres consisted of glyceryl monostearate dilaurate and stearyl alcohol (ratio 3: 17). The lipospheres were obtained by a technique involving melting and dispersion of drug-containi…
High-order methods for the simulation of hydromagnetic instabilities in core-collapse supernovae
2011
AbstractWe present an assessment of the accuracy of a recently developed MHD code used to study hydromagnetic flows in supernovae and related events. The code, based on the constrained transport formulation, incorporates unprecedented ultra-high-order methods (up to 9th order) for the reconstruction and the most accurate approximate Riemann solvers. We estimate the numerical resistivity of these schemes in tearing instability simulations.
Absorber materials for low-energy neutrons—Theoretical and experimental studies
2012
Abstract Absorber materials for low-energy neutrons are studied in the theoretical framework of quantum mechanics with a complex potential. Analytical expressions and numerical calculations of the neutron reflectivity for perpendicular and isotropic motion towards a surface for four different material classes are presented. Comparative experimental studies of four absorber materials have been carried out: Polyethylene, titanium, boron-10 and lithium stearate. In a quasi-storage experiment with ultracold neutrons the latter material features the highest absorption property.
Temporal evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in the frequently interrupted regime
2010
A phenomenological method for description of temporal evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in the frequently interrupted regime (FIR) is proposed. The method makes it possible to predict the beginning and the end of the FIR regime as well as the frequency of the FIR drops. A few experimental parameters which are used in the model are commonly measured quantities. Several specific ASDEX Upgrade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASDEX_Upgrade) FIR discharges with different heating and different FIR behavior are analyzed in detail.
Tears as a source of biomarkers for ocular and systemic diseases
2013
The main focus in clinical proteomics is the discovery of new protein or peptide biomarkers which are correlated with a certain disease. Tear proteins have been investigated extensively in the past and distinct relations between the levels of certain tear proteins to different disorders have been demonstrated. In this review we attempt to summarize proteomic technologies for biomarker identification in tears and some disease related biomarkers in tear fluids that were discovered through different proteomic techniques in different conditions like dry eye, Sjogren's syndrome, contact lens wearers, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or cancer. Proteomic analysis of tear fluid has proven to be a pr…
Interaction between stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase polymorphism and feeding system in affecting the fatty acid profile of sheep cheese
2021
Stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase (SCD) catalyses the synthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids, by introducing a cis double bond at the delta 9–10 position. The study investigated the effects of a polymorphism at the ovine SCD gene and its interaction with the inclusion of fresh forage in the diet on cheese fatty acid (FA) composition in Valle del Belice ewes. A region of 527 bp of the ovine SCD gene including the partial sequence of the promoter, the complete sequence of the 5’ UTR and exon 1 and the partial sequence of intron 1 were analyzed in order to identify the g.87C > A SNP located in the promoter region. A feeding trial was carried out using 16 Valle del Belice ewes selected on the…

Sangre de nobles, mártires y pecadores. Los caballeros de San Juan entre la reforma religiosa y la vida militar
2018
After the fall of Rhodes in 1522, the Order of St. John needed to recover new headquarters (which were finally established in Malta in 1530) and its reputation as militia Christi. This Religion in arms had now to redraft its chivalrous ideals within the new context of the Reformation and the Catholic Renewal. However, Hospitallers met this challenge partially and late, although they represented themselves as belonging to this glorious Religion. Such a dialectic between practice and theory is proved, for example, by an apologetic book published in 1619 in Italy and Spain, as well as by unpublished instructions in the late seventeenth century directed at the chaplains providing religious supp…
