Thermal analyses of commercial magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs

2005

Abstract Two commercial magnesium stearate powders in two well-characterised structural states are investigated using DSC and coupled TGA–DTA under dry nitrogen flow. They consist of either a mixture of crystalline hydrates or a poorly crystallised so-called anhydrate. Following the degassing of unbound water, 1 or 3 weight-loss peaks are observed below about 100 °C, each associated with one heat loss peak at the same temperature. The present results and a review of graphical data from literature show that the so-called anhydrate always contains a significant amount of water. At the beginning of the dehydration process, the heat loss is the same as the standard heat of vaporisation of water…

Liquid chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometric determination of cholesterol in animal greases

1997

Abstract Stearic acid, cholesterol and cholesteryl palmitate have been separated in less than 14 min by liquid chromatography on a column (3.9 mm i.d.×150 mm) of Nova-Pack C 18 (5 μm) using chloroform–acetonitrile (45 : 55) as mobile phase pumped at 0.5 ml min −1 ; Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was employed for both, general detection at 2868 or 2855 cm −1 and selective detection at 3285 cm −1 for stearic acid and 3526 cm −1 for cholesterol. In all cases a baseline established at 3900 cm −1 , 9-point smoothing and chromatographic peak height measurements were used. The method has been validated by application to the determination of cholesterol in animal greases and fish oi…

Chromium(VI) oxide oxidation of non-ethoxylated and ethoxylated alcohols for determination by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

2010

A new derivatization procedure to increase the sensitivity of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to non-ethoxylated and ethoxylated alcohols was investigated. The analytes were oxidized with chromium(VI) oxide and the resulting carboxylic and ethoxy-carboxylic acids were isolated by extraction with ethyl acetate; the extracts were alkalinized and infused into the ESI-MS system working in the negative-ion mode. The yields of the combined oxidation-extraction were ca. 100% for non-ethoxylated fatty alcohols dissolved in acetone and they decreased moderately in samples containing increasing amounts of water (e.g., a 75% yield was obtained with 50% water). Ethoxylated alcohols w…

Prediction of Ductile Fractures Occurrence in Deep Drawing of Square Boxes

1996

Abstract The authors propose a new approach for the prediction of tearing in the deep drawing process of square boxes. Such an approach is based on a damage mechanics formulation and in particular on the yield condition for damaging materials proposed by Tvergaard and Needleman and on a strain controlled nucleation model. The flow rule associated to the yield condition is introduced in a finite element explicit formulation founded on the solution of the dynamic equilibrium equation and on an explicit time integration scheme. By this way the developed model allows to calculate the void volume fraction value during the deep drawing process of square boxes and consequently to predict the insur…

Orientational order of Langmuir–Blodgett films as determined by fluorescence anisotropy

1989

The orientational order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉, of cadmium stearate Langmuir–Blodgett multilayers have been calculated from steady state fluorescence anisotropy experiments. It has been shown that it is valid to model the polarization components using the assumptions that the fluorescent probes are axially symmetric, the film is azimuthally symmetric within the plane, and that the rotational motion is slow enough to be neglected. Although the data do not preclude a dependence of anisotropy on thickness, within the sample‐to‐sample variations, there is no significant effect of thickness on orientational order. The order parameters for newly deposited films are 〈P2〉=0.33 and 〈P4〉=0.02. The …

Efficacy and safety study of an eyelid gel after repeated nocturnal application in healthy contact lens users and non-users

2020

Purpose: To evaluate skin biocompatibility of a nighttime hydrating eyelid gel and possible ocular surface effects in contact lens users (CLU) and non-contact lens users (NCLU). The formulation is registered as a medical device as Tridocosahexaenoine-AOX® (TDHA-AOX) (a concentrated DHA triglyceride), containing also hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was performed with 62 participants of both sexes, aged 20–70 years, split into: (1) CLU (n = 30) and (2) NCLU (n = 32). All participants were instructed to apply a single dose of the moisturizing gel (containing TDHA-AOX and HA) nightly to the upper and inner eyelids of their right eye (RE) only, and…

Identification of lipid binders in old oil paintings by separation of 4-bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin derivatives of fatty acids by liquid chromatogr…

2005

A HPLC-fluorescence method for identification of drying oils from binding media or protective film used in pictorial works of art prior to conservation or restoration is proposed. Fluorescence derivatization of fatty acids released by hydrolysis of structural drying oils is studied. The derivatization reagent was 4-(bromomethyl)-7-methoxycoumarin with 18-crown-6 as catalyst. Mobile phase was programmed from methanol-water (90:10 v/v) to methanol-water (100:0 v/v) in 25 min. The excitation and emission wavelengths were 325 and 395 nm, respectively. Under these chromatographic conditions, coumarin derivatives of myristic, palmitic, oleic and stearic acids were satisfactorily resolved. The met…

Structural properties of magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs: effect of temperature.

2003

A thorough review of the relevant literature reveals that the interaction between water vapour and magnesium stearate, in contrast to many other metal soaps, is not properly understood. The structural modifications associated with the up-take or loss of water of vegetable-derived commercial magnesium stearate powders exposed to humid air or vacuum at room temperature are investigated using standard powder X-ray diffractometry. It is found that in such conditions magnesium stearate reacts reversibly with the vapour phase with structural consequences very similar to the high temperature transition between the crystalline and rotator phases of other anhydrous metal soaps. When temperature is i…

Evaluation of supraspinatus tendon teras with elastosonography in comparison to US and MRI . Our experience

2009

INTRODUCTION: Elastosonography is a new promising ultrasound tool that can evaluate soft-tissue elasticity, in particular of the tendons. The purpose of this study was to value the elasticity of the supraspinatus tendon in shoulders with clinically suspected unilateral rotator cuff tear, and to compare the findings with those of US and MRI. MATHERIALS AND METHODS: 36 shoulders of 18 patients (mean age 46 years; range: 32 – 58 years) were examined by Elastosonography using the EUB – Hitachi 7500 Japan. Electronic array transducer of 13 MHz was used. By Elastosonography, we have evaluated the tendon fibers with a seminquantitative score of different colors representing stiff tissue (blue) to …

Optimal Blankholder Force Path in Sheet Metal Forming Processes: An Al Based Procedure

1999

Abstract Blankholder force plays a fundamental role in the deep drawing process mechanics since it controls, by friction, the material flow into the die cavity. The availability of computer controlled hydraulic presses in the industries promoted a new research field focused on the definition of optimal BHF histories, function of the punch displacement; such studies were aimed to the determination of the so called “process window”, i.e. the BHF path which permits to obtain the maximum height sound component avoiding both wrinkling and tearing. In the paper a design procedure is proposed in order to determine the optimal BHF path in an axisymmetric deep drawing process: in particular, a close…
