If contact lens or spectacle correction is not viable, little debate exists that the secondary placement of an intra-ocular lens (IOL) is the method of choice in the absence of capsular support. The choice of IOL mainly depends on the preoperative status of the eye (eg, aphakia in children) and the selected location for the implant. To evaluate the influence of dapiprazole versus brimonidine on pupil size at various illumination levels.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany.In randomized prospective study, 19 healthy volunteers received 2 ophthalmic solutions, dapiprazole and brimonidine, 1 in each eye, for intraindividual comparison. Before and after application, pupil diameter was measured using an infrared binocular pupillometer at 3 illumination levels (0.03, 0.82, and 6.4 lux).Only slight pupil dilation was observed under scotopic conditions after application of both agents. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To describe a new technique of implantation of the Artisan/Verisyse phakic intraocular lens (PIOL). METHODS: After PIOL insertion into the anterior chamber, a bolus of a high viscosity ophthalmic viseosurgical device (OVD) is placed over the optic, separating it widely from the endothelium. RESULTS: The technique decreases the chance of endothelial damage during enclavation. CONCLUSIONS: A bolus of a high viscosity OVD placed on the anterior surface of the Artisan/Verisyse PIOL may make enclavation safer. [J Refract Surg. 2006;22:96-98.]

We investigated the spontaneous uterine activity of isolated corpus uteri myometrial strips from 30 patients with nonpathologic myometrium, 26 patients with uterine myoma, 23 patients with uterine adenomyosis, and three patients with uterine malignancy. We also investigated the influence of these conditions on the response of the uterus to histamine. The results show the same qualitative cyclic changes of the spontaneous motility of isolated myometrial strips throughout the menstrual cycle in all the abnormalities studied. Computed tomography is generally considered to be the most reliable and, indeed, the definitive diagnostic technique for demonstration of brain tumors. Approximately 98% of intracra-nial lesions are detected with CT. However, extremely high sensitivity is not the only advantage of CT in diagnosis of intracranial tumors. PURPOSE Comparison of two different types of contrast-enhanced 3D-MR angiography (CE-MRA) with integrated parallel acquisition technique (iPAT) in patients with chronic-thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and evaluation whether sagittal acquisition with higher resolution and minimized acquisition time is superior to common coronal orientation. In 105 patients CT studies were done prospectively after renal ESWL with a second generation lithotripter. 33 (31%) of the patients had renal oedema (n = 8), renal (n = 20) or extrarenal (n = 31) bleeding. Three of the 23 patients who had a three year follow-up had chronic renal changes, 10 had renal stones. As blunt renal trauma can be the cause of renal hypertension a longterm follow-up is necessary in ESWL patients, particularly if there was renal bleeding after treatment. Further studies are needed to determine the exact risk of renal hypertension after ESWL.
