Clinical studies on the appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and old adults

2004

Objectives:  To evaluate the typical appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and elderly people and to develop guidelines for the natural appearance of dentures. Design:  Clinical examination and photography. Inclusion criteria were a dental state with natural anterior teeth and no more than two crowns. Subjects:  A study group (SG) consisting of 64 patients ranging in age from 60 to 86 years (67.3 ± 5.8) and a control group (CG) composed of 64 dental students aged 21–33 years (25.8 ± 2.4). Setting:  Dental schools of the Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz and the University of Leipzig. Results:  Most participants were content with the appearance of their own natural teeth. With rela…

Accidental dental displacement into the maxillary sinus during extraction maneuvers: a case series

2020

Background The aims of this study were to describe the clinical findings of patients that suffered teeth displacement into the maxillary sinus, and to report the surgical technique used to solve this complication. Material and Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted involving patients that suffered a displacement of teeth into the maxillary sinus. Demographic and clinical data were recorded from the affected patients and a descriptive statistical analysis was made of the study variables. Results A total of nine patients were enrolled, six males (66.7%) and three females (33.3%), with a mean age of 36.0 years (range 22-54). In five patients (55.5%) the displaced teeth remai…

Changes in anatomic position of root canal orifices in pluriradicular teeth following re-location during endodontic treatment

2017

Abstract Direct access to the root canals in posterior teeth for endodontic treatment is most frequently facilitated by the straightening of the coronal parts of the root canals, having as a consequence the relocation of the canal orifices on the map of the floor of the pulp chamber ( Christie and Thompson, 1994 ). This procedure intentionally moves the coronal aspect of a canal away from the center of the chamber, while simultaneously removing internal dentin from the pulp chamber walls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the displacement resulting from the relocation of root canal orifices during the initial phase of rotary root canal treatment in molars using the dental operating micr…

Estimation of the age of majority through radiographic evaluation of the third molar maturation degree

2020

Background Although the third molar is the tooth with the greatest anatomical and developmental variability, some authors consider it important to estimate whether a subject is of legal age or not. The Demirjian’s technique is the most widely used tool to estimate dental age and was therefore used in our study to assess possible correlation between the age of majority and the maturational degree of the lower third molars, evaluated through radiographic images. Material and Methods This observational transversal study was conducted on 180 panoramic radiographs from consecutive patients. The degree of maturation of the lower third molar was independently classified by two observers, according…

Sensibility and taste alterations after impacted lower third molar extractions. A prospective cohort study

2012

Objectives: To determine the incidence, severity and duration of lingual tactile and gustatory function impairments after lower third molar removal. Study Design: Prospective cohort study with intra-subject measures of 16 patients undergoing lower third molar extractions. Sensibility and gustatory functions were evaluated in each subject preoperatively, one week and one month after the extraction, using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and 5 different concentrations of NaCl, respectively. Additionally, all patients filled a questionnaire to assess subjective perceptions. Results: Although patients did not perceive any sensibility impairments, a statistically significant decrease was detected …

Efficacy and complications associated with a modified inferior alveolar nerve block technique. A randomized, triple-blind clinical trial

2014

Objectives: To compare the efficacy and complication rates of two different techniques for inferior alveolar nerve blocks (IANB). Study Design: A randomized, triple-blind clinical trial comprising 109 patients who required lower third molar removal was performed. In the control group, all patients received an IANB using the conventional Halsted technique, whereas in the experimental group, a modified technique using a more inferior injection point was performed. Results: A total of 100 patients were randomized. The modified technique group showed a significantly higher onset time in the lower lip and chin area, and was frequently associated to a lingual electric discharge sensation. Three f…

Periodontal health and esthetic results in impacted teeth exposed by apically positioned flap technique.

2010

Objectives: This study evaluates the periodontal health status and the esthetic results of teeth subjected to orthodontic traction, after their exposure by an apically positioned flap. Study design: Fifteen patients were included in the study, ages between 11 and 28 years old. The fenestrated teeth and their homologous contralateral normally erupted teeth, used as control, were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the position of the gingival margin (p = 0.005), with an average distance between cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and gingival margin of 2.47 mm (SD 1.19) in control teeth and of 1 mm (SD 1.31) in the operated teeth, and in the depth of palatal pro…

Significance of pre-treatment panoramic radiographic assessment of edentulous patients-A survey

2010

Objectives: The present study was undertaken to review the significance of pre-treatment panoramic radiographic assessment of edentulous patients, in the dental patient population of Haryana, India. Study Design: In this study a total of 525 completely edentulous patients were selected randomly. A panoramic radiograph was taken using Panoramic machine (Rotagraph plus) and all the radiographs were evaluated by 2 oral radiology specialists for the following clinically significant radiographic findings: retained root fragments, embedded teeth, radiolucencies, radiopacities and location of the mental foramen at the crest of the residual alveolar ridge. The data were analyzed using the chi squar…

Prolonged in vitro exposure to white wines enhances the erosive damage on human permanent teeth compared with red wines.

2009

Abstract The aim of this in vitro study was to determine and compare the erosive potentials of red and white wines, exerted on enamel surfaces prepared from extracted human permanent teeth. European wines (50 red, 50 white wines) from different regions were purchased, and the pH values were measured. Eight wines with different pH values were selected. Enamel samples with an average surface area of 25 mm 2 were prepared from 25 extracted permanent teeth from male and female patients aged 40 to 65 years and incubated with wines for up to 24 hours; the amounts of released calcium were determined colorimetrically, and mean surface roughness was measured with a profilometer. A quantitative eleme…

Prevalence and characteristics of supernumerary teeth in a non-syndrome Turkish population: Associated pathologies and proposed treatment

2009

Objective: The objectives of the present study were to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of supernumerary teeth and evaluate the associated pathologies and treatment protocol in a Turkish patient population. Study design: A retrospective study was performed using full-mouth periapical and panoramic radiographs of 3491 patients (2146 females and 1345 males) ranging in age from 12 to 25. For each patient with supernumerary teeth we recorded the demographic variables (including age, sex), number, location, position, type, and morphology of supernumerary teeth, associated pathologies or complications, and whether any treatment has been carried out. The Pearson chi-squared test was …
