This study investigates literacy practices in the EFL classroom and subscribes to a social view of literacy (Literacy Studies). Accordingly, literacy is understood as a social practice where people talk about and around texts. Literacy in the classroom is embedded in the institutional context of education, which is characterized by specific discursive practices and by certain types of texts. In this case study, we investigate Finnish as a L2 writing skill of weak writers in lower secondary school. The study is based on writing performances of 25 students who each completed four different writing tasks (i.e., 100 texts) and questionnaire about background information, self-assessment of writing and literacy practices. First, we discuss writing profciency of the target language in general and in school context from curriculum and pedagogical point of view. The modern world is a textual world. The way people relate to their mother tongue is undergoing a re-evaluation as a result of internationalisation and globalisation. Changes in the conceptual systems and modes of action of society are reflected in language and language use.
