Indirect dark matter search with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

Using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope during 2007 and 2008, a search for high energy neutrinos coming from the direction of the Sun has been performed. The neutrino selection criteria have been chosen so as to maximize the rejection of the atmospheric background with respect to possible signals produced by the self-annihilation of weakly interactive massive particles accumulated in the centre of the Sun. After data unblinding, the number of neutrinos observed was found to be compatible with background expectations. The INT/WFC Photometric H-Alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is a 1800 square degrees imaging survey covering Galactic latitudes |b| < 5 deg and longitudes l = 30 to 215 deg in the r, i and H-alpha filters using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-metre Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in La Palma. We present the first quality-controlled and globally-calibrated source catalogue derived from the survey, providing single-epoch photometry for 219 million unique sources across 92% of the footprint. Observations with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer were conducted in spectral ranges from 1.6 to 4.7 µm from July 17 to 21 (UT) on the hot plumes appearing on the limb as well as hours or days after the impacts. We present here an analysis of the methane emission observed at 3.3 µm some 10 min after the C impact, indicating the presence of a very small (less than 100 km wide) hot region with temperatures in the 750–1500 K range within the 0.1- to 0.01-mbar region. We also report the detection of CO emission at 4.7 µm 4.5 hrs after the L impact, indicative of a temperature of 274±10 K at the ∼1016 CO molec cm−2 level. The THESEUS space mission concept: science case, design and expected performances

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. Searches for small-scale anisotropies from neutrino point sources with three years of IceCube data

Recently, IceCube found evidence for a diffuse signal of astrophysical neutrinos in an energy range of $60\,\mathrm{TeV}$ to the $\mathrm{PeV}$-scale. The origin of those events, being a key to understanding the origin of cosmic rays, is still an unsolved question. So far, analyses have not succeeded to resolve the diffuse signal into point-like sources. Searches including a maximum-likelihood-ratio test, based on the reconstructed directions and energies of the detected down- and up-going neutrino candidates, were also performed on IceCube data leading to the exclusion of bright point sources. Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja virtuālā izstāde „Astronomiskajam tornim – 150” veltīta labi pamanāmai Latvijas Universitātes galvenās ēkas iezīmei – Astronomiskajam tornim uz tās jumta. 2019. gadā ēkai un arī tornim apritēja 150 gadi. Rīgas Politehnikuma laikos te strādājuši dažādi ārzemju profesori, kas veica astronomiskus novērojumus un mācīja studentus. Nodibinoties Latvijas Universitātei, tornis kļuva par Astronomiskās observatorijas sastāvdaļu. Astronomiskais tornis uz Latvijas Universitātes galvenās ēkas jumta jau 150 gadus kalpo kā logs uz kosmosu. 19. gadsimtā te veikti zinātniski novērojumi, 20. gadsimtā tornī uzstādīto Heides teleskopu izmantoja studentu apmācībai un debess spīdekļu demonstrēšanai. No 1986. gada zvaigžņotās debess demonstrējumi notiek ļoti aktīvi, nomainījušies trīs teleskopi.
Measurement of the group velocity of light in sea water at the ANTARES site

The group velocity of light has been measured at eight different wavelengths between 385 nm and 532 nm in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of about 2.2 km with the ANTARES optical beacon systems. A parametrisation of the dependence of the refractive index on wavelength based on the salinity, pressure and temperature of the sea water at the ANTARES site is in good agreement with these measurements.
