The question of cinematic VR production has been on the table for several years. This is due to the peculiarity of VR language which, even if it is de ned by an image that surrounds and immerses the viewer rather than placing them, as in the classic cinematic situation, in front of a screen, relies decisively on an audiovisual basis that cannot help but refer to cinematic practices of constructing visual and auditory experience. The monographic section of this issue of Cinergie arises from a need that has becoming increasingly acute in the past few years, namely that of closely examining the modes, practices, strategies, and forms of storytelling used in the various forms and experiences of Virtual Reality (VR) entertainment. The question that we asked ourselves, and thus also the eld of analysis that we wanted to open focuses primarily on two elements: first, on if and how cinematic narration can exist in VR; second, on what paths the development of a form of storytelling not directly tied to cinematic language might take.

Like many of Wenders’ films, the book Una volta (Einmal. Bilder und Geschichten, 1994; Once: Pictures and Stories) is the result of a fruitful encounter between different arts. Wenders now takes on the role of photographer and narrator, while never completely abandoning the more usual role of director. The beginning of every short composition in Einmal, associated with one or more images, is the usual one of fairy tales. In this work Wunschloses Unglück is read as if it were an impressionistic biography in images. The tale was born out of an attempt to give Handke’s fifty-year-old mother, who died of suicide, back a story and an identity. A way to give content and contours to the woman and to neutralize the depersonalizing effect of the news of the event in the pages of the local newspaper. The story of the mother is actually, from the very beginning, a reflection of the writer on his own work, on the difficulty of writing ‘true’ stories, on the tormented search for a precarious balance between description and documentation, between narration and image, between truth and fiction.
