This article examines some peculiar features of magic (γοητεία), supernatural (τέρας), marvellous (θαυμαστός) and paradoxical (παράδοξος) in Themistius’ Orations 4, 7, 11, 16 and 29. Here the allusive depiction of prodi…
Gl-learning
2016
In this paper, we present a new open-source software library, Gl-learning, for grammatical inference. The rise of new application scenarios in recent years has required optimized methods to address knowledge extraction from huge amounts of data and to model highly complex systems. Our library implements the main state-of-the-art algorithms in the grammatical inference field (RPNI, EDSM, L*), redesigned through the OpenMP library for a parallel execution that drastically decreases execution times. To our best knowledge, it is also the first comprehensive library including a noise tolerance learning algorithm, such as Blue*, that significantly broadens the range of the potential application s…
Representations for evolutionary algorithms
2015
Successful and efficient use of evolutionary algorithms (EA) depends on the choice of the genotype, the problem representation (mapping from genotype to phenotype) and on the choice of search operators that are applied to the genotypes. These choices cannot be made independently of each other. The question whether a certain representation leads to better performing EAs than an alternative representation can only be answered when the operators applied are taken into consideration. The reverse is also true: deciding between alternative operators is only meaningful for a given representation. In EA practice one can distinguish two complementary approaches. The first approach uses indirect repr…
Epistemic and didactic values of the demonstrative process in different cultures: a case study in Geometry with Chinese and Italian students

Why laparoscopists may opt for three-dimensional view: a summary of the full HTA report on 3D versus 2D laparoscopy by S.I.C.E. (Società Italiana di …
2018
Background Three-dimensional view in laparoscopic general, gynaecologic and urologic surgery is an efficient, safe and sustainable innovation. The present paper is an extract taken from a full health technology assessment report on three-dimensional vision technology compared with standard two-dimensional laparoscopic systems. Methods A health technology assessment approach was implemented in order to investigate all the economic, social, ethical and organisational implications related to the adoption of the innovative three-dimensional view. With the support of a multi-disciplinary team, composed of eight experts working in Italian hospitals and Universities, qualitative and quantitative d…
The Essential Thrombocythemia, Thrombotic Risk Stratification, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors
2020
Essential thrombocythemia is a rare hematological malignancy with good overall survival, but moderate to high risk of developing arterial or venous thrombosis lifelong. Different thrombotic risk scores for patients with essential thrombocythemia have been proposed, but only one of them (the IPSET-t scoring system) takes into account the classical cardiovascular risk factors as one of the scoring items. Currently, in clinical practice, the presence of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with diagnosis of ET rarely determines the decision to initiate cytoreductive therapies. In our study, we compared different risk models to estimate the thrombotic risk of 233 ET patients and the role of …
Mechanical and microstructural characterization of titanium gr.5 parts produced by different manufacturing routes
2022
Abstract In recent years, the aircraft industry has shifted its preference for metal parts to titanium and its alloys, such as the high-strength Titanium Grade5 alloy. Because of Titanium Grade 5 limited formability at ambient temperature, forming operations on this material require high temperatures. In these conditions, a peculiar microstructure evolves as a result of the heating and deformation cycles, which has a significant impact on formability and product quality. On the other hand, additive manufacturing technologies, as selective laser melting and electron beam melting, are increasingly being used and are replacing more traditional approaches such as machining and forging. Fundamen…
Selective Laser Melting of Ti6Al4V: Effects of Heat Accumulation Phenomena Due to Building Orientation
2022
Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V is one of the most utilized alloys in the field of additive manufacturing due to the excellent combination of mechanical properties, density and good corrosion behavior. These characteristics make the use of this material particularly attractive for additively manufacturing components with complex geometry in sectors such as aeronautics and biomedical. Selective Laser Melting (SLM), by which a component is fabricated by selectively melting of stacked layers of powder using a laser beam, is the one of most promising additive manufacturing technologies for Ti6Al4V alloy. Although this technique offers numerous advantages, it has some critical issues related to the high …
Effects of hydrazyl group containing drugs on leucocyte functions: an immunoregulatory model for the hydralazine-induced lupus-like syndrome.
1985
Isoniazid (INH) and hydralazine (HYD) are transglutaminase (TGase, E.C.2.3.2.13.) substrates containing catalytically recruitable hydrazyl groups. Since they can be expected to inhibit TGase-mediated cell functions by competing with physiological substrates, their effect upon allogeneically and lectin-induced proliferation of mononucleocytes and upon zymosan-induced chemiluminescence of phagocytes was studied. Both compounds inhibited chemiluminescence in a dose-dependent manner. ID50 of HYD was consistently below 20 microM, while that of INH was above 120 microM. Proliferation of immunocompetent cells was suppressed by HYD with an ID50 of 60 microM, INH was inhibitory only above 5000 micro…
