An Optimization Device for Series Parallel Connected PV Plants
2017
In this paper it is presented a testing prototype of a reconfiguration system for photovoltaic (PV) plants. The system enables to increase the total energy output by reducing the electrical mismatch between the PV array modules. The architecture of the implemented switching matrix, performing the dynamic electrical interconnections of the PV panels, enables to reconfigure nine solar modules in a series-parallel (SP) configuration. The contribution is organized as follows. A brief state of the art is first presented, followed by a comparison between the SP and Total-Cross-Tied (TCT) connections. The prototype then is thoroughly described as well as the main design choices. Finally some tests…
Evaluation of a Visual Tool for Early Patent Infringement Detection During Design
2019
Patent infringement detection usually implies research among documents in different forms, in both natural and unstructured language, often involving a lot of human resources and time. In order to ease this patent check process, we previously presented a visual tool to be used by designers themselves at any stage of the design process, providing them with useful and reliable information for deciding whether to steer their design away from potential patent infringements. In this work, we report on a usability study carried out on such a tool with 21 professional designers from industry in the field of mechanical engineering. The outcome of our study shows that our tool is very well accepted …
Supporting tourism with public interactive displays
2019
Interactive displays are common in public and semi-public areas, such as museums, shopping malls, train stations, and even on streets. Especially with the emergence of new ways of interaction, interactive displays could be introduced to popular tourist attractions to support tourism. The aim of this tutorial is to prepare its participants for designing such interactive public displays. The tutorial will first introduce participants to state of the art in interactive public displays. This will be followed by a city tour where a number of local attractions are visited. Finally, the participants will brainstorm and create concepts for novel interactive public displays that aim to improve the e…
Semiautomatic Behavioral Change-Point Detection: A Case Study Analyzing Children Interactions With a Social Agent
2021
The study of human behaviors in cognitive sciences provides clues to understand and describe people’s personal and interpersonal functioning. In particular, the temporal analysis of behavioral dynamics can be a powerful tool to reveal events, correlations and causalities but also to discover abnormal behaviors. However, the annotation of these dynamics can be expensive in terms of temporal and human resources. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a methodology to semi-automatically annotate behavioral data. Behavioral dynamics can be expressed as sequences of simple dynamical processes: transitions between such processes are generally known as change-points. This paper describes th…
Different mechanisms underlie implicit visual statistical learning in honey bees and humans
2020
International audience; The ability of developing complex internal representations of the environment is considered a crucial antecedent to the emergence of humans’ higher cognitive functions. Yet it is an open question whether there is any fundamental difference in how humans and other good visual learner species naturally encode aspects of novel visual scenes. Using the same modified visual statistical learning paradigm and multielement stimuli, we investigated how human adults and honey bees ( Apis mellifera ) encode spontaneously, without dedicated training, various statistical properties of novel visual scenes. We found that, similarly to humans, honey bees automatically develop a comp…
Optimizing Renewable Power Management in Transmission Congestion. An Energy Hub Model Using Hydrogen Storage
2021
Energy production from distributed renewable power plants underwent a takeoff in last years as never before. Nevertheless, the installation of technologies based on variable energy resources and their connection on transmission power lines might cause congestions due to the transmission capacity limits. This paper describes the modelization of a HV transmission line with local renewable production and its optimal management through an Energy Hub model. Aim of the study is to identify the optimal size of the power storage, based on an electoryzer, a hydrogen storage and a fuel cell, in order to minimize the congestion risks and to maximize the exploitation of renewable energy production.
A Cognitive Framework for Imitation Learning
2006
Abstract In order to have a robotic system able to effectively learn by imitation, and not merely reproduce the movements of a human teacher, the system should have the capabilities of deeply understanding the perceived actions to be imitated. This paper deals with the development of cognitive architecture for learning by imitation in which a rich conceptual representation of the observed actions is built. The purpose of the following discussion is to show how this Conceptual Area can be employed to efficiently organize perceptual data, to learn movement primitives from human demonstration and to generate complex actions by combining and sequencing simpler ones. The proposed architecture ha…
How Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization are changing key power infrastructures
2018
Abstract This paper addresses the impact over key power infrastructures of the three main drivers for change of these times: Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization. The three phenomena, according to prominent observers, are affecting all fields of our lives but, in the literature, it is difficult to find an analysis of their impact on electrical power systems. The framework proposed in this paper, based on the main power systems evolution models proposed by CIGRE, uses data from open databases and tries to find out general guidelines for power systems development at a worldwide level. Taking as reference the European and COP21 environmental objectives and beyond, the technolog…
