From athletic talent development to dual career development? A case study in a Finnish high performance sports environment

2020

The focus of dual career (DC) research has shifted from exploring individual experiences within Athletic Talent Development Environments (ATDEs) toward understanding the impact of the environment and the broader cultural context on individuals’ developmental trajectories in Dual Career Development Environments (DCDEs). To comply with national and EU recommendations for socially responsible elite sport, many successful ATDEs list DC as one of their primary values and advertise themselves as DCDEs in order to attract more athletes. The present study aimed to evaluate whether and how a talent development environment for youth athletes in Finland has transformed from an ATDE to DCDE by explorin…

Oral dysphagia. An unique symptom for a wide spectrum of diseases

2009

Dysphagia, defined as a difficulty in swallowing of fluids and/or solid foods, is one of the most frequent symptoms of esophageal, gastrointestinal, ear, nose and throat diseases. As such, it poses a diagnostic challenge and an interdisciplinary clinical problem. Of particular importance in diagnosis is to distinguish between esophageal and oropharyngeal dysphagia. Oropharyn-geal dysphagia is often associated with neuromuscular disorders and is treated with rehabilitative protocols, while esophageal dysphagia may be due to anatomical alterations and esophageal motility difficulties. While the former can be adequately treated with endoscopic or surgical therapy, the latter are currently trea…

Indispensability and Effectiveness of Diagrams in Molecular Biology

2019

Abstract: In this paper I aim to defend a twofold thesis. On one hand, I will support, against Perini (2005), the indispensability of diagrams when structurally complex biomolecules are concerned, since it is not possible to satisfactorily use linguistic-sentential representations at that domain. On the other hand, even when diagrams are dispensable I will defend than they will generally be more effective than other representations in encoding biomolecular knowledge, relying on Kulvicki-Shimojima’s diagrammatic effectiveness thesis. Finally, I will ground many epistemic virtues of biomolecular diagrams (understandability, explanatory power, prediction and hypothesis evaluation) on their cog…

Instead of an Editorial: Mission Statements by Representatives of Both Fields

2012

The following mission statements by linguists and literary scholars working in different institutional and cultural contexts and at different stages of their careers are intended to map out the terrain covered by this journal. They tell similar stories about how these scholars came to cross the disciplinary boundary that too often divides their two fields, and they reveal a number of shared interests and emphases. But they also highlight the diversity of methodologies to which this journal is open – from metrics and stylistics to the cognitive sciences and Systemic Functional Grammar. The hopes and expectations voiced by the authors are partly pragmatic, expressing the wish that the journal…

Induction of tcI 7 , a gene encoding a β-subunit of proteasome, in tobacco plants treated with elicitins, salicylic acid or hydrogen peroxide 1

2000

We previously isolated, by differential display and 5′ RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends), cDNAs corresponding to genes activated following cryptogein treatment of tobacco cell suspensions, among them tcI 7 (tcI for obacco ryptogein nduced), a gene encoding a β-subunit of proteasome. Here, we report that tcI 7 was up-regulated in tobacco plants treated with elicitins (cryptogein and parasiticein) that have been shown to induce a systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Moreover, subsequent inoculation of tobacco with the pathogen Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae (Ppn) was shown to induce an additional activation of tcI 7 in tobacco plants pretreated with cryptogein. We also showed an…

An Experimental Investigation of Residual Stresses in Hard Machining of AISI 52100 Steel

2011

In this paper an experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of the tool cutting-edge geometry, workpiece hardness, cutting speed, and microstructural changes (white and dark layers) on the residual stresses in dry orthogonal hard machining of AISI 52100 steel. X-ray diffraction technique was used to obtain in-depth residual stresses profiles in both axial and circumferential directions. The results show that tool geometry, workpiece hardness and cutting parameters significantly affect the surface residual stress, maximum compressive residual stress below the machined surface and its location. Moreover, microstructural analysis shows that thermally-induced phase transf…

Innovative user defined density profile approach to fsw of aluminium foam

2007

Metallic foams are one of the most exciting materials in the world of mechanical industry due to their reduced mass and the good mechanical, thermal and acoustic characteristics. Consequently, their application, is increasing day by day even with the important drawbacks that reduce their suitability and diffusion such as high manufacturing cost and difficulty in processing. An innovative approach is outlined in this paper that enables the production of complex shapes taking advantage of deformation processing and friction stir welding (FSW). The aim is to create customized tailored manufactured parts. The cellular construction of foams makes this approach rather challenging as the cell wall…
