Coalition: Advocacy for prospective clinical trials to test the post-exposure potential of hydroxychloroquine against COVID-19
2020
Our coalition of public health experts, doctors, and scientists worldwide want to draw attention to the need for high-quality evaluation protocols of the potential beneficial effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a post-exposure drug for exposed people. In the absence of an approved, recognized effective pre or post-exposure prophylactic drug or vaccine for COVID-19, nor of any approved and validated therapeutic drug, coupled with social and political pressure raised by publicity both regarding the potential beneficial effect of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as well as potential risks from HCQ, we urge the immediate proper clinical trials. Specifically, we mean using HCQ for post-exposure of peo…
Drug-Induced Respiratory Disease in Connective Tissue Diseases
2004
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses drug-induced respiratory disease in connective tissue diseases. Drug-induced lung diseases (DILDs) vary in severity from mild to life threatening. Generally, DILDs subside upon drug discontinuance, and leave permanent sequelae in a minority of patients. Less frequently, DILDs persist unabated, or progress despite drug withdrawal, requiring specific management. Drugs used in connective tissue diseases (CTDs) can produce a constellation of pulmonary and systemic reactions. These can mimic pulmonary involvement from CTD, a systemic disease, or an infection, and are difficult to prevent, predict, and diagnose. Maintaining a high index of suspicion enable…
An Intelligent Tool to Predict Fracture in Sheet Metal Forming Operations
2007
One of the main issues in sheet metal forming operations design is the determination of formability limits in order to prevent necking and fracture. In fact, the ability to predict fracture represents a powerful tool to improve the production quality in mechanical industry. Many researchers investigated the problem here addressed, mainly studying forming limit diagrams (FLD) or developing fracture criteria which are able to foresee fracture defects for different processes. In this paper, the author present some early results of a research project focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for ductile fracture prediction in sheet metal forming operations. The main advantage o…
GAIML: A New Language for Verbal and Graphical Interaction in Chatbots
2008
Natural and intuitive interaction between users and complex systems is a crucial research topic in human-computer interaction. A major direction is the definition and implementation of systems with natural language understanding capabilities. The interaction in natural language is often performed by means of systems called chatbots. A chatbot is a conversational agent with a proper knowledge base able to interact with users. Chatbots appearance can be very sophisticated with 3D avatars and speech processing modules. However the interaction between the system and the user is only performed through textual areas for inputs and replies. An interaction able to add to natural language also graph…
The Case Law of the ECtHR in 2020 in the Light of the Principle of Systemic Harmonisation
2021
This article provides for an overview of some relevant developments in the case-law of the ECtHR in 2020. Priority will be given to Grand Chamber judgments and decisions and those of the Chambers deemed to be relevant from a substantial and procedural viewpoint. Given that in 2020 the Steering Committee for Human Rights published its report on ‘The Place of the European Convention of Human Rights in the International and European Legal Order’, the case-law will be selected and examined from the viewpoint of the principle of systemic harmonisation. The aim is highlighting positive and negative examples of application of general international law by the ECtHR, of cross-fertilisation between t…

Do soils exist outside Earth?
2010
Abstract On Earth, soils form thanks to the combined action of at least five factors: parent rock, climate, topography, biota, and time. However, the necessity of biota as unavoidable soil forming factor is debated, as important parts of our planet experiencing extreme climates host virtually life-free soils with advanced horizonation. Now that space exploration has greatly expanded our understanding of the Solar System, providing consistent evidences that the loose, unconsolidated "skin" of some nearby rocky bodies is lifeless, it is time to establish if the latter can be considered to be soil in a pedological sense. Our feeling is that, since the concept of soil chiefly bases on the occur…

Special issue of Quantitative Finance on ‘Interlinkages and Systemic Risk’
2015
This special issue of Quantitative Finance collects eight papers on the relation between interlinkages and systemic risk. The papers cover several types of interlinkages and follow different approaches, from agent-based modelling to empirical investigation of large and sometimes confidential data. The special issue collects some of the contributions presented at the international workshop‘Interlinkages and systemic risk ’ , which took place in Ancona (Italy) on 4 – 5 July 2013. The workshop, organized within the research project‘. New tools in the credit network modeling with agents ’ heterogeneity ’ funded by the Institute for New Economic Thinking, was attended by a balanced mix of schola…
