Integrated Approach to Part Scheduling and Inspection Policies for a Job Shop Manufacturing System

2007

The quality of a product greatly depends on the quality of its components. This requires that manufacturing specifications have to be met in the manufacturing environment and as a consequence inspection stations are present in many manufacturing systems and inspection policies must be adopted. One problem, which has been widely investigated, concerns the detection of the inspection points in the hypothesis that the action to be taken is known when a defective part is detected. If different jobs are to be produced, then operation scheduling becomes yet another complex problem needing to be solved. And while the problem of scheduling has received a great amount of attention from researchers, …

An execution, monitoring and replanning approach for optimal energy management in microgrids

2011

abstract This work develops a new approach for optimal energy management of electrical distribution ‘smart-grids’. Optimality aims at improving sustainability through the minimization of carbon emissions and atreducing production costs and maximizing quality. Input data are the forecasted loads and productionsfrom renewable generation units, output data are a set of control actions for the actuators. Theconsidered electrical distribution system includes storage units that must be considered over a 24 h timeinterval, to consider an entire charge and discharge cycle. The objectives for the optimal management ofdistributed (renewables and not) generation are technical, economical and environme…

Ground-Fault Current Transfer at the Transition Station of a Combined Overhead-Cable Line. A Parametric Analysis

2007

When a substation is fed by a combined overhead-cable transmission line, a significant part of the ground fault current flows through the grounded cable sheaths and discharges into the earth at the transition station, where cables are connected to the overhead line. If the transition station is a dead-end steel pole structure, the local ground electrode, small and of high resistance, could be inadequate to maintain the ground potential rise within safety limits in case of a fault to ground at the receiving end substation. Based on a circuit model approach, the paper presents a parametric analysis of the fault current distribution between the faulted substation and the transition station, ta…

Mitigation of 50 Hz magnetic field produced by an overhead transmission line

2015

Power transmission utilities are challenged by the need to expand transmission system capacity to meet growing energy demands. The impact of high voltage overhead transmission lines on the environment represents a hot topic in the context of transport and distribution of electrical energy. In particular, interest towards the effects of extra low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields generated by high-voltage power transmission lines has been increasing significantly during the last decade, giving rise to a number of policy initiatives and research activities. Therefore, the evaluation of the magnetic field generated by conductors of overhead lines is of primary importance in order to develop meth…

Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 2: Economic feasibility and sensitivity analysis

2016

This paper is the second of a two-part series, aiming to evaluate the economic feasibility of electrochemical storage systems in peak load shaving applications. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is considered to be added to a private facility, with the aim of reducing the customer electricity bill. The BESS is charged during the night, when the electricity prices are the lowest and discharged during the daily hours, when the prices are the highest, contemporary achieving a leveling of the daily usage pattern. The economical evaluations are carried out considering four different electrochemical technologies: lithium-ion (li-ion), advanced lead-acid, sodium-sulphur (NaS) and flow batte…

A force measuring based strategy for failure prevention in incremental forming

2006

Abstract Incremental forming processes show a number of advantages compared to the traditional processes but, at the same time, some drawbacks are clearly known. Current problems, include the slowness of the process, low accuracy and a lack of knowledge in the field of material formability. This paper is focused on the latter issue: an industrially oriented methodology for detecting the approach of failure in incremental forming is proposed. The approach is based on the analysis of the trend of the forming force in order to assess whether the process can be run safely. If not, a proper strategy, to avoid material failure, is proposed and experimentally validated.

Evaluation to support stakeholder centered design and continuous quality improvement in higher education services

2014

Abstract: Evaluation and self-evaluation procedures are commonly used in educational institutions to measure education services and research performance. This chapter describes the main opportunities that evaluation-based approaches can produce to support processes of design and continuous quality improvement in higher education institutions in the light of recent normative measures in Italy to address quality aspects of education services. Subsequently, a new approach – based on the ServQual conceptual model – that evaluates education services is used to carry out a strategic analysis of education services at the management engineering program at the University of Palermo, Italy.

Stationary battery technologies in the U.S.: Development Trends and prospects

2017

Abstract In the last years, stationary battery systems started to attract the attention of stakeholders thanks to their unique ability to decouple power generation and load over time, providing the ancillary services necessary for the stability and the reliability of the electrical system. This is especially true in the presence of high levels of penetration of renewable energy technologies, like wind and solar photovoltaic (PV), because of increased fluctuations in the electricity produced by these renewable sources. Despite the growing interest in energy storage technologies, the academic literature has not completely assessed the development trends of this sector. In order to fill this g…

A sustainability point of view on sheet metal forming operations: material wasting and energy consumption in incremental forming and stamping process…

2012

Abstract Sustainability and sustainable production is nowadays a wide research field due the urgency of reducing environmental burdens of industrial production. Sustainable manufacturing issues are widely investigated too. In particular, due to the relevance such issues assume for automotive and aeronautical industry, the investigation of sheet metal forming processes sustainability is worth studying and, within this research fields, a certain lack of knowledge is still present. Many studies have been presented concerning the evaluation and reduction of environmental burdens in manufacturing. In this paper, the authors focus on sheet metal forming and aim to investigate both the efficient u…
