Improving the energy efficiency of an islanded distribution network using classical and innovative computation methods

2016

The paper presents the analysis of some potentially suitable actions for reducing the energy losses of an islanded Medium Voltage distribution network, with the aim of improving electricity distribution efficiency. For this purpose, four actions are considered: 1) increasing the network's rated voltage; 2) reactive power compensation through static capacitor banks; 3) reactive power compensation through switchable capacitor banks; 4) installation of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation. The first two measures are typically taken into account by the distribution system operators and can be examined by means of classical design methods, whereas the latter two more innovative actions are t…

Highly potent artemisinin-derived dimers and trimers: Synthesis and evaluation of their antimalarial, antileukemia and antiviral activities

2015

New pharmaceutically active compounds can be obtained by modification of existing drugs to access more effective agents in the wake of drug resistance amongst others. To achieve this goal the concept of hybridization was established during the last decade. We employed this concept by coupling two artemisinin-derived precursors to obtain dimers or trimers with increased in vitro activity against Plasmodiumfalciparum 3D7 strain, leukemia cells (CCRF-CEM and multidrug-resistant subline CEM/ADR5000) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). Dimer 4 (IC50 of 2.6 nM) possess superior antimalarial activity compared with its parent compound artesunic acid(3) (IC50 of 9.0 nM). Dimer5 and trimers6 and 7 disp…

Gitanas without a tambourine: Notes on the historical representation and personal self-representation of the Spanish Romani woman.

2020

The performative representation of the Spanish Roma woman reveals a historical journey that brings her closer to many symbolic elaborations of the feminine, giving her a special affinity with the imaginary concerning the colonized woman, particularly with the Orientalist vision. Developed initially by the travelling intellectuals in Spain who sought a fusion of the topics of sexualized exoticism, the myth was reworked by local artists and thinkers without undermining their power to silence and make invisible the reality of the most vulnerable and most represented members of the ethnic group, their women. Today, a growing awareness of the importance of collective action directs Roma women t…

A Multi-Scale Colour and Keypoint Density-Based Approach for Visual Saliency Detection

2020

In the first seconds of observation of an image, several visual attention processes are involved in the identification of the visual targets that pop-out from the scene to our eyes. Saliency is the quality that makes certain regions of an image stand out from the visual field and grab our attention. Saliency detection models, inspired by visual cortex mechanisms, employ both colour and luminance features. Furthermore, both locations of pixels and presence of objects influence the Visual Attention processes. In this paper, we propose a new saliency method based on the combination of the distribution of interest points in the image with multiscale analysis, a centre bias module and a machine …

On the use of Deep Reinforcement Learning for Visual Tracking: a Survey

2021

This paper aims at highlighting cutting-edge research results in the field of visual tracking by deep reinforcement learning. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is an emerging area combining recent progress in deep and reinforcement learning. It is showing interesting results in the computer vision field and, recently, it has been applied to the visual tracking problem yielding to the rapid development of novel tracking strategies. After providing an introduction to reinforcement learning, this paper compares recent visual tracking approaches based on deep reinforcement learning. Analysis of the state-of-the-art suggests that reinforcement learning allows modeling varying parts of the tracki…

An optimization approach for efficient management of EV parking lots with batteries recharging facilities

2013

In this paper an optimization approach to devise efficient management strategies for Electric Vehicles parking lots is proposed. A Monte Carlo approach is used to evaluate the load consumption profile for groups of Electric Vehicles showing different features. The Monte Carlo approach allows to combine the different social and economical features affecting the commercial penetration of Electric Vehicles with the technical aspects. The basic feature to be assessed is the initial State Of Charge, which in turn depends on the distance travelled by the vehicle since the last recharge and thus by the usage of the vehicle (private, professional). The model is then used to optimize some objective …

The intentional stance as structure learning: a computational perspective on mindreading

2015

Recent theories of mindreading explain the recognition of action, intention, and belief of other agents in terms of generative architectures that model the causal relations between observables (e.g., observed movements) and their hidden causes (e.g., action goals and beliefs). Two kinds of probabilistic generative schemes have been proposed in cognitive science and robotics that link to a "theory theory" and "simulation theory" of mindreading, respectively. The former compares perceived actions to optimal plans derived from rationality principles and conceptual theories of others' minds. The latter reuses one's own internal (inverse and forward) models for action execution to perform a look…

Accessible stories within mediascapes. Voicing otherness in digital museums

2022

This article presents the first steps in the investigation of the potential for digital storytelling and digital museums to be used as instruments for access, as enablers of epistemic and poietic agency. Digital storytelling and migration museums are used as a case study to explore in what ways digital storytelling impacts meaning-making processes performed by migrants, allowing them to become active creators and disseminators of their own experiences. Through the combination of corpus linguistics, systemic functional linguistics, and lexical semantic analysis, an ad-hoc comparable corpus of migrant narratives in English and in Italian was cross-examined in order to scrutinise the conceptua…

Family studies in scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) demonstrating an HLA-linked increased chromosomal breakage rate in cultured lymphocytes

1988

An increased chromosomal breakage rate (ICBR) was found in 27 of 28 patients with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis, SS) - 5 with the syndrome including calcinosis cutis, Raynaud phenomenon, esophagus hypomotility, sclerodactyly and telangiectasia (CREST), 4 incomplete CREST, 1 overlapping syndrome, 18 progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Not only the patients, but also about half of their first-degree relatives showed an increased chromosomal breakage rate (more than 5 breaks per 100 metaphases). This character segregated as a dominant marker in nine families of scleroderma patients. In the six informative of the nine families, the ICBR trait showed close linkage with the HLA region on chro…

A framework for remission in SLE

2017

ObjectivesTreat-to-target recommendations have identified ‘remission’ as a target in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but recognise that there is no universally accepted definition for this. Therefore, we initiated a process to achieve consensus on potential definitions for remission in SLE.MethodsAn international task force of 60 specialists and patient representatives participated in preparatory exercises, a face-to-face meeting and follow-up electronic voting. The level for agreement was set at 90%.ResultsThe task force agreed on eight key statements regarding remission in SLE and three principles to guide the further development of remission definitions:1. Definitions of remission wi…
