Transitions in European land-management regimes between 1800 and 2010
2015
Land use is a cornerstone of human civilization, but also intrinsically linked to many global sustainability challenges—from climate change to food security to the ongoing biodiversity crisis. Understanding the underlying technological, institutional and economic drivers of land-use change, and how they play out in different environmental, socio-economic and cultural contexts, is therefore important for identifying effective policies to successfully address these challenges. In this regard, much can be learned from studying long-term land-use change. We examined the evolution of European land management over the past 200 years with the aim of identifying (1) key episodes of changes in land …
Check in, check out! : käyttäytymisen tehostettua tukea lähikoulussa
2018
Finnish schools struggle with problem behaviour and need new interventions which are effective, acceptable, and can be implemented with high fidelity in general classrooms. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Check in check out (CICO) support in decreasing the disruptive behaviours of general education primary school pupils. CICO can be regarded as an intensified level of support in Finnish schools, and its key features are brief morning and afternoon meetings with a CICO coach, the use of a Daily Report Card (DRC), regular positive feedback during the day by the classroom teacher, and parental involvement. The specific aims of the study were threefold: first, to pilot the i…
Intensifiers
2014
The label ‘intensifiers’ (or ‘emphatics’) groups together words, widely attested crosslinguistically (e.g. Eng. x-self, Germ. selbst, Ital. stesso, Lat. ipse, Japanese zisin and zibun, Mandarin zı j ĭetc.), whose main function is to signal some sort of emphasis or focus with respect to a nominal head they are adjoined to in the sentence, as in The author herself will present the book. In addition to the term ‘intensifiers’ (Moravcsik 1972; Edmondson and Plank 1978), there exist many other labels in the relevant literature to define this sub-class of functional words, which reflect the (anything but closed) debate on their actual categorial status. This entry discuss the origin and the funct…
Intensificatori e soggettificazione in latino: sulla grammaticalizzazione di maxime
2022
The aim of this paper is to investigate the grammaticalization path of the intensifying adverb maxime in Early Latin, within the perspective of the so-called ‘subjectification’ theory. Despite the difficulty of drawing discrete boundaries within the multifunctional category of adverbs, the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic analysis of maxime across different contexts of use allows us to identify at least three main functions of this adverb in early Latin texts, mostly in the Roman comedy of Plautus and Terence. In particular, adopting the perspective of the Functional Discourse Grammar, it is shown that maxime is used as (i) degree adverb, which modifies a large range of elements acting at …
Profiles of work intensification among Finnish managers: relationships with well-being and turnover intentions
2020
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, millaisia työn intensifikaation eli työn kiihtymisen profiileja voidaan tunnistaa johtajilla ja miten eri profiilien johtajat eroavat toisistaan työhyvinvoinnin ja työnkuvan vaihtoajatusten suhteen. Kyselytutkimuksen otos poimittiin Professoriliiton, Tieteentekijöiden liiton, Suomen Ekonomien ja Tekniikan Akateemisten jäsenrekistereistä. Tutkituista johtajista (N=705) yli puolet (56 %) oli miehiä. Löysimme K-keskiarvojen klusterianalyysin avulla viisi profiilia: 1) Riskiprofiili (voimakas työn intensifikaatio, 31 %), 2) suotuisa profiili (työn- ja urasuunnittelun vaatimukset lisääntyneet kohtuullisesti, 19 %), 3) haitta- ja haastestressoriprofiili (työtahti ja ti…
Do intensified job demands predict burnout? How motivation to lead and leadership status may have a moderating effect
2023
ObjectivesThe aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate how intensified job demands (job-related planning demands, career-related planning demands, and learning demands) are associated with burnout. We explored whether affective-identity motivation to lead moderates this association and, thus, functions as a personal resource regardless of leadership status. We further investigated whether the possible buffering effect is stronger for those professionals who became leaders during the follow-up.MethodsOur sample consisted of highly educated Finnish professionals (n = 372): part of them (n = 63, 17%) occupied a leadership position during the 2-year follow-up while the rest maintained …
Is work intensification bad for employees? A review of outcomes for employees over the last two decades
2022
Work intensification (WI) is a notable job stressor, which has been hypothesised to result in various negative outcomes for employees. However, earlier empirical studies regarding this stressor hypothesis have not yet been reviewed. Our narrative review focused on the outcomes for employees of WI as a perceived job stressor. Our review was based on selected qualitative and quantitative empirical studies (k = 44) published in peer-reviewed journals between the years 2000 and 2020. Altogether, the findings of these studies showed that WI was related to various negative outcomes for employees, such as impaired well-being and motivation, supporting the stressor hypothesis. Stressful WI manifest…
Eiropas Kopējās Lauksaimniecības Politikas "zaļināšanas" pasākumu ietekme uz putnu daudzveidību divās dažādās Latvijas lauku ainavās
2017
Eiropas Kopējās Lauksaimniecības Politikas (KLP) 2014. gadā noteiktās prasības par ekoloģiski nozīmīgu platību (ENP) ieviešanu lauksaimniecības zemēs tiek argumentētas kā būtisks instruments bioloģiskās daudzveidības uzlabošanai Eiropas Savienības lauksaimniecības zemēs, taču konkrētu pierādījumu tam nav. Šī darba mērķis ir noskaidrot šo platību ietekmi uz putnu daudzveidību Latvijas lauku ainavā. Izvirzīta hipotēze, ka būtiskas ietekmes uz putnu sugu daudzveidību ENP Latvijā nav.
Green Synthesis of Vanillin: Pervaporation and Dialysis for Process Intensification in a Membrane Reactor.
2019
In the present work, two different membrane processes (pervaporation and dialysis) are compared in view of their utilization in a membrane reactor, where vanillin, which is probably the most important aroma of the food industry, is synthesized in a green and sustainable way. The utilized precursor (ferulic acid, which is possibly a natural product from agricultural wastes) is partially oxidized (photocatalytically or biologically) and the product is continuously recovered from the reacting solution by the membrane process to avoid its degradation. It is observed that pervaporation is much more selective towards vanillin than dialysis, but the permeate flux of dialysis is much higher. Furthe…
Leaders’ intensified job demands : Their multi-level associations with leader-follower relationships and follower well-being
2022
To study the ever-increasing pace of work practices, we investigated leader experiences of intensified job demands (IJDs) and their effects on followers. Based on the challenge-hindrance approach, different kinds of job demands may produce either negative or positive work-related outcomes. Using this perspective, we investigated the leaders IJDs against their followers’ satisfaction with them as leaders, follower evaluations of the leader-member exchange (LMX) relationship quality, and their personal well-being (burnout and work engagement). Of the four IJDs, (1) work intensification and (2) career-related planning demands were conceptualised as negative hindrances for leaders, whereas (3) …
