Lexicografía, traducción y terminología: relaciones a partir de Della Geometria di Orontio Fineo tradotte da Cosimo Bartoli (Venetia, 1587)

2014

2014

This article is the English version of “Lexicografía, traducción y terminología: relaciones a partir de Della Geometria di Orontio Fineo tradotte da Cosimo Bartoli (Venetia, 1587)” by Francisco Javier Sánchez Martín. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. The mathematical books composed by the French mathematician Oronce Finé gained a great prestige in the sixteenth century, as evidenced by the translations of his work about Geometry, Optics, Geography and Astronomy, Protomathesis: Opus varium. Now, our interest is focused on Della Geometria…

Celebrating 100 Years of Musical Outreach in Scandinavia

2016

This article outlines the significant, but less investigated historical development of musical outreach; the professional symphony orchestras effort to introduce classical music to new audiences, especially children and adolescents. Many Norwegian symphony orchestras have held public concerts for 100 years and throughout this period they have set up strategic objectives regarding outreach. Through a series of musical examples from various concerts targeting new audiences, the article draws a historical overview of the different concepts of concerts that have developed from the early 1900s till today. In order to better understand the uniqueness of these concerts, and enable us to appreciate…

French Endocrine Society Guidance on endocrine side effects of immunotherapy.

2018

The management of cancer patients has changed due to the considerably more frequent use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs). However, the use of ICPI has a risk of side effects, particularly endocrine toxicity. Since the indications for ICPI are constantly expanding due to their efficacy, it is important that endocrinologists and oncologists know how to look for this type of toxicity and how to treat it when it arises. In view of this, the French Endocrine Society initiated the formulation of a consensus document on ICPI-related endocrine toxicity. In this paper, we will introduce data on the general pathophysiology of endocrine toxicity, and we will then outline expert opinion focusing…

A Toolbox of Phenomenological Methods

2009

In addition to a large number of misrepresentations of phenomenology,1 one can see an increasing interest in phenomenology among cognitive scientists and analytic philosophers. It is the method of phenomenology from which one expects to shed some light on the problem of consciousness. How does this approach work? What are the specific tools of phenomenology? Explanations as well as critical discussions of phenomenological methods are scattered across the literature. Moreover, the sometimes misleading or impenetrable terminology of classical phenomenology blocks easy understanding. The language of phenomenology may be an important reason why the working cognitive scientist who may be ready t…

Letter to the Editor: use of some inappropriate terms in Spanish in Oral Medicine and Pathology

2016

Dear Editor: According to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy (DLERAE) (1) anglicism refers to those words or terms of English language that are used in another. The Spanish language has acquired and uses numerous anglicisms, especially for words that have no option to be translated into Spanish, such as those absent in this language like internet, wifi, whisky, etc. In Medicine a lot of anglicisms are inevitably used today in the medical language, such as: stress, test, distress, gold standard, score, shunt, level, etc. Dentistry also commonly uses many anglicisms, such as forceps, bonding, inlays, composite, etc. that would be justified in most cases due to…

Literal translation in the audiovisual field. Methods and techniques

2017

The debate on literal translation is an old one, and it will surely continue to exist for the time to come. In any case, it is not intended to address that discussion here, but rather to take a descriptive, nonjudgmental look at the matter for the sole purpose of pointing out the need for more precise terminology when speaking about literal translation, especially in translation teaching. As it will be explained, literal translation can be both a translation method and a translation technique and it seems appropriate to be aware of what we mean exactly when we use this label. Moreover, as it will be shown, the positions in either direction (method or technique) remain in force, although the…
