The membrane-bound complement inhibitors CD46 (membrane cofactor protein), CD55 (decay-accelerating factor) and CD59 (protectin) protect tumour cells against lysis by activated complement. In this study, a total of 14 (3 gastric, 3 colonic and 8 pancreatic) gastrointestinal tumour cell lines were examined for the expression of CD46, CD55 and CD59 with respect to the regulatory efficacy of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). Approximately 80% to 85% of GISTs harbor activating mutations of the KIT or PDGFRA tyrosine kinase genes, and such mutations have predictive and prognostic value. Midgut pseudotumors and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis: studies on aging and manipulated stick insects.

Stick insects (Carausius morosus) develop pseudotumors in aging adults. Pseudotumor formation starts at the M2 midgut region where an accumulation of stomatogastric nerve terminals is observed. Pseudotumors arise from dying columnar cells whose basal parts form an “amorphous substance” at the basement membrane whereas the apical parts, including the nucleus, are expelled into the gut lumen. The “amorphous substance” is ensheathed by hemocytes. These nodules, which do not melanize, characterize the phenotype of the pseudotumors. With age, cell death and pseudotumor infestation increases. Dietary ontogeny and niche shift to piscivory in lacustrine brown trout Salmo trutta revealed by stomach content and stable isotope analyses

The feeding ecology and ontogeny of a large size range of brown trout Salmo trutta in Lake Fyresvatnet, southern Norway, were examined by stomach content and stable isotope analyses. According to the stomach contents, the S. trutta changed their diet at c. 30 cm total length (L(T) ). The smaller size classes fed on benthic invertebrates and surface insects, whereas larger S. trutta (30 cm) fed mainly on whitefish Coregonus lavaretus. The main buffering system influencing ionizable drug dissolution in the human intestinal fluid is bicarbonate-based; however, it is rarely used in routine pharmaceutical practice due to the volatility of dissolved CO2. The typical pharmaceutical buffers used fail to capture the unique aspects of the hydration-dehydration kinetics of the bicarbonate-CO2 system. In particular, CO2 is involved in a reversible interconversion with carbonic acid (H2CO3), which is the actual conjugate acid of the system, as follows CO2 + H2O ⇌ H2CO3. Many epidemiological studies demonstrate that treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduce the incidence and mortality of certain malignancies, especially gastrointestinal cancer. The cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes are well-known targets of NSAIDs. However, conventional NSAIDs non-selectively inhibit both the constitutive form COX-1, and the inducible form COX-2.
