In addition to the respiratory copper-containing proteins for which it is named, the arthropod hemocyanin superfamily also includes phenoloxidases and various copperless storage proteins (pseudo-hemocyanins, hexamerins and hexamerin receptors). It had long been assumed that these proteins are restricted to the arthropod phylum. However, in their analysis of the predicted genes in the Ciona intestinalis (Urochordata:Tunicata) genome, Dehal et al. (Science 298:2157–2167) proposed that the sea squirt lacks hemoglobin but uses hemocyanin for oxygen transport. Abstract A comparative study of the bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in a fruit juice-Stevia rebaudiana mixture processed by pulsed electric fields (PEF), high voltage electrical discharges (HVED) and ultrasound (USN) technology at two equivalent energy inputs (32–256 kJ/kg) was made using an in vitro model. Ascorbic acid was not detected following intestinal digestion, while HVED, PEF and USN treatments increased total carotenoid bioaccessibility. This research presents a novel performance-based interpretation method for continuous monitoring of pavement condition through the use of piezoelectric sensors. The objective of this study is to validate the compressed cumulative loading event approach, implemented in a previously developed piezoelectric sensor, for detecting subsurface fatigue cracking through full-scale accelerated pavement testing. A piezo-electric film of polyvinylidene fluoride is used to harvest the microstrain energy induced by the traffic loading at the surface.
