A new calculation procedure for non-uniform residual stress analysis by the hole-drilling method
1998
The hole-drilling method is one of the most used semi-destructive techniques for residual stress analysis in mechanical parts. In the presence of non-uniform residual stress, the stress field can be determined from the measured relaxed strains using several calculation methods, but the most used one is the so-called integral method. This method is characterized by some simplifications that lead to approximate results, especially when the residual stress varies abruptly. In this paper a new calculation procedure called the spline methods is proposed, which allows these drawbacks to be overcome. Numerical simulations and an experimental test have corroborated the best performance of the prop…
Thermoplastic Properties of Endodontic Gutta-percha: A Thermographic In Vitro Study
2014
Abstract Introduction Endodontic gutta-percha undergoes deformation at temperatures above 65°C. The temperature influence of heat carriers on gutta-percha cones was investigated in vitro. Methods Six single-rooted extracted teeth were embedded in resin and fixed. The root canals were prepared (ProFile; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaiques, Switzerland) to different tapers and bisected. Thermographic images when heating the gutta-percha cones (Roeko, Langenau, Germany) with a heat carrier (ML .12; SybronEndo, Orange, CA) at 1 and 5 mm from the working length were made with an infrared thermal imaging camera (ThermaCam P640; Flir Systems, Taby, Sweden). The device temperature was preset at 200°C. T…

LC-MS untargeted metabolomic analysis of drug-induced hepatotoxicity in HepG2 cells
2015
Hepatotoxicity is the number one cause for agencies not approving and withdrawing drugs for the market. Drug-induced human hepatotoxicity frequently goes undetected in preclinical safety evaluations using animal models. Human-derived in vitro models represent a common alternative to in vivo tests to detect toxic effects during preclinical testing. Most current in vitro toxicity assays rely on the measurement of nonspecific or low sensitive endpoints, which result in poor concordance with human liver toxicity. Therefore, making more accurate predictions of the potential hepatotoxicity of new drugs remains a challenge. Metabolomics, whose aim is to globally assess all the metabolites present …

From Defined Reactive Diblock Copolymers to Functional HPMA-Based Self-Assembled Nanoaggregates
2008
This paper describes the synthesis of functional amphiphilic poly( N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide)-block-poly(lauryl methacrylate) copolymers by RAFT polymerization via the intermediate step of activated ester block copolymers (pentafluoro-phenyl methacrylate). Block copolymers with molecular weights from 12000-28000 g/mol and PDIs of about 1.2 have been obtained. The amphiphilic diblock copolymers form stable super structures (nanoaggregates) by self-organization in aqueous solution. The diameters of these particles are between 100 and 200 nm and depend directly on the molecular weight of the block copolymer. Furthermore, we investigated the impact of these nanoaggregates on cell viabi…
Comparing local structures of spatio-temporal point processes on linear networks
2022
We employ the Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions on linear networks to build a statistical test for local second-order structure. This allows to identify differences in the spatio-temporal clustering behaviour of two point patterns, a point pattern of interest and a background one, both occurring on the same linear network. We illustrate the proposed methodology analysing a traffic-related problem.
A novel sequential testing procedure for selecting the number of changepoints in segmented regression models
2023
In this work, we address the problem of selecting the number of changepoints in segmented regression models. We propose a novel stepwise procedure and assess its performance through simulation studies. We demonstrate that our proposal behaves well with the Gaussian and Binomial responses.
Experimental Assessment of the Backoff Behavior of Commercial IEEE 802.11b Network Cards
2007
It has been observed that different IEEE 802.11 commercial cards produced by different vendors experience different performance, either when accessing alone the channel, as well as when competing against each other. These differences persist also when thorough measurement methodologies (such as RF shielding, laptop rotation, etc) are applied, and alignment of the environmental factors (same laptop models, traffic generators, etc) is carried out. This paper provides an extensive experimental characterization of the backoff operation of six commercial NIC cards. It suggests a relevant methodological approach, namely a repeatable, well defined, set of experiments, for such a characterization. …
Defect detection in additively manufactured titanium prosthesis by flying laser scanning thermography
2018
Abstract Metal additive manufacturing is nowadays a well-established technology for cutting edge applications in the automotive, aerospace, defense and medical sectors. Since additive metal deposition is basically a welding method, which creates parts by successively adding layers of material, there is a chance for defects like pores, cracks, inclusions and lack of fusion to develop. As a matter of fact, interlayer and intralayer defects are often observed in additive manufactured components. However, if one considers the typical end applications along with the high costs involved in metal additive manufactured components, a “zero defect” target is close to mandatory for this technology. Pl…
