Toward the Development of Load Transfer Efficiency Evaluation of Rigid Pavements by a Rolling Wheel Deflectometer

2020

The jointed rigid pavement is currently evaluated by the Falling weight deflectometer which is rather slow for the testing of the jointed pavements. Continuous nondestructive evaluation of rigid pavements with a rolling wheel deflectometer can be used to measure the load transfer and is investigated. Load transfer is an important indicator of the rigid pavement&rsquo

Influence of Menstrual Cycle or Hormonal Contraceptive Phase on Physiological Variables Monitored During Treadmill Testing

2021

Purpose: To examine the influence of menstrual cycle (MC) and hormonal contraceptive (HC) cycle phases on physiological variables monitored during incremental treadmill testing in physically active women (eumenorrheic, EUM = 16 and monophasic HC-users, CHC = 12). Methods: Four running tests to exhaustion were performed at bleeding, mid follicular (mid FOL)/active 1, ovulation/active 2, and mid luteal (mid LUT)/inactive. HC and MC phases were confirmed from serum hormones. Heart rate (HR), blood lactate (Bla), and VO˙ 2 were monitored, while aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnaT) thresholds were determined. VO˙ 2peak, maximal running speed (RUNpeak), and total running time (RUNtotal) were recor…

Modular Small Diameter Vascular Grafts with Bioactive Functionalities.

2015

We report the fabrication of a novel type of artificial small diameter blood vessels, termed biomimetic tissue-engineered blood vessels (bTEBV), with a modular composition. They are composed of a hydrogel scaffold consisting of two negatively charged natural polymers, alginate and a modified chitosan, N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (N,O-CMC). Into this biologically inert scaffold two biofunctionally active biopolymers are embedded, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) and silica, as well as gelatin which exposes the cell recognition signal, Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD). These materials can be hardened by exposure to Ca(2+) through formation of Ca(2+) bridges between the polyanions, alginate, N,O-CMC, and polyP…

Understanding the Effects of Crosslinking and Reinforcement Agents on the Performance and Durability of Biopolymer Films for Cultural Heritage Protec…

2021

In the last two decades, the naturally occurring polysaccharides, such as chitosan and pectin, have gained great attention having potential applications in different sectors, from biomedical to new generation packaging. Currently, the chitosan and pectic have been proposed as suitable materials also for the formulation of films and coatings for cultural heritage protection, as well as packaging films. Therefore, the formulation of biopolymer films, considering only naturally occurring polymers and additives, is a current challenging trend. This work reports on the formulation of chitosan (CS), pectin (PC), and chitosan:pectin (CS:PC) films, also containing natural crosslinking and reinforce…

Porous Gelatin Hydrogels:  2. In Vitro Cell Interaction Study

2007

We report on the feasibility of applying porous gelatin hydrogels, prepared by a novel and controlled cryogenic treatment, as cell-interactive scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. Despite the large number of publications on gelatin as a biomaterial, a detailed study of screening a limited number of gelatin scaffolds for their interaction with a panel of human cells has, to the best of our knowledge, not yet been published. In the present work, we have evaluated two types of porous gelatin scaffolds that differ in their pore geometry and pore size. Type I hydrogels contained top-to-bottom transverse channels (i.e. cones) with a decreasing diameter from the top (330 microm) to the b…

Unilateral Maximal Isometric Hex Bar Pull Test: Within-Session Reliability and Lower Body Force Production in Male and Female Freeski Athletes

2021

The aim of the study was to (1) assess the within-session reliability of a unilateral isometric hex bar pull (UIHBP) maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) test and, (2) determine unilateral isometric absolute peak force (PFabs) and relative peak force (PF) values in freeski athletes. Twenty-one male and eight female academy to national team freeskiers performed the novel UIHBP MVC task on a force plate and PFabs and relative PF were assessed (1000 Hz). Within-session measures of PFabs offered high reliability on left and right limbs for males (ICC = 0.91–0.94, CV = 2.6–2.2%) and females (ICC = 0.94–0.94, CV = 1.4–1.6%), while relative PF measures showed good to high reliability in both left a…

A case study on the evaluation of friction stir welds by ultrasonic inspection technique

2015

Friction stir welding (FSW) is an innovative process that has been successfully used in joining aluminum alloys, normally difficult to weld. Important advantages over fusion welding are better retention of baseline material properties, lower residual stresses and excellent mechanical properties. Defects that occur in FSW joints are due to improper tooling or setup. Non-destructive techniques used to inspect FSW joints are X-rays, eddy current, conventional ultrasonic testing and dye penetrant proper only for surface breaking defects. Currently there is no non-destructive technique that can guarantee absence of flaws in friction welds during manufacturing. In this work, non-destructive remot…

Tailoring the excitation of fundamental flexural guide waves in coated bone by phase-delayed array: Two-dimensional simulations

2015

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) enables ultrasonic assessment of cortical bone thickness. In vivo, it is challenging to detect this mode, as its power ratio with respect to disturbing ultrasound is reduced by soft tissue covering the bone. A phase-delayed ultrasound source is proposed to tailor the FFGW excitation in order to improve its power ratio. This situation is analyzed by 2D finite-element simulations. The soft tissue coating (7-mm thick) was simulated as a fluid covering an elastic plate (bone, 2–6 mm thick). A six-element array of emitters on top of the coating was excited by 50-kHz tone bursts so that each emitter was appropriately delayed from the previous one. Respo…

Nejaušdatu testēšana tīmekļa lietotņu saskarnēm

2021
