Can visualization alleviate dichotomous thinking? Effects of visual representations on the cliff effect

2021

Common reporting styles for statistical results in scientific articles, such as $p$ p -values and confidence intervals (CI), have been reported to be prone to dichotomous interpretations, especially with respect to the null hypothesis significance testing framework. For example when the $p$ p -value is small enough or the CIs of the mean effects of a studied drug and a placebo are not overlapping, scientists tend to claim significant differences while often disregarding the magnitudes and absolute differences in the effect sizes. This type of reasoning has been shown to be potentially harmful to science. Techniques relying on the visual estimation of the strength of evidence have been recom…

Concrete columns confined with fibre reinforced cementitious mortars: Experimentation and modelling

2014

Abstract The structural behaviour of concrete columns strengthened with a system made up of fibre nets embedded in an inorganic stabilized cementitious matrix under an uniaxial load was investigated. Medium size specimens with circular and square cross-section were cast and subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression, to investigate the efficiency of a p-Phenylene BenzobisOxazole (PBO) Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Mortar (FRCM) system in increasing both strength and ductility. The experimental results show that the confinement system adopted produced a noticeable increment in strength and ductility, though the low mechanical ratios of fibre considered were not always able to ensure hardeni…

Age and sex-based differences in functional strength of adults participating in Special Olympics

2022

Muscular strength is a critical component of physical health. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine age- and sex-based differences in functional strength and rates of referral for education in a large international sample of Special Olympics athletes. A total of 30,358 (male = 19,661) adult (20–69 years old) athlete functional strength records were utilized from the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes database. Descriptive statistics were computed for the following tests: timed sit to stand, partial sit-up, grip strength, and seated push-up. Analyses of variance with Fisher-Hayter pairwise comparisons generally supported age-related decreases in strength among both males and fe…

Evaluation of interlaminar delaminations in titanium-graphite fibre metal laminates by infrared NDT techniques

2018

Abstract Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs) describe a number of aerospace-grade layered structural materials where thin metal alloy foils are interleaved with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) plies. Such material hybridisation at the layer meso-scale poses a challenge for non-destructive testing (NDT). On the other hand, the need for NDT inspection of FMLs arises due to the potential development of interlayers disbonds, both during fabrication or in-service. This work describes the successful implementation of two Infrared-NDT approaches to evaluate a defected FML panel made of Titanium/Graphite (Ti-Gr). One technique is based on the modulation of the deployed heat from a low-cost halogen lamp, to…

From Bi-Dimensionality to Uni-Dimensionality in Self-Report Questionnaires

2021

Abstract. The common factor model – by far the most widely used model for factor analysis – assumes equal item intercepts across respondents. Due to idiosyncratic ways of understanding and answering items of a questionnaire, this assumption is often violated, leading to an underestimation of model fit. Maydeu-Olivares and Coffman (2006) suggested the introduction of a random intercept into the model to address this concern. The present study applies this method to six established instruments (measuring depression, procrastination, optimism, self-esteem, core self-evaluations, and self-regulation) with ambiguous factor structures, using data from representative general population samples. I…

Educación XX1 : revista de la Facultad de Educación

2017

In-situ NDT testing procedure as an integral part of failure analysis of historical masonry arch bridges

2015

Abstract A nineteenth-century masonry arch bridge was analyzed as an illustrative example to explain the role of in-situ test campaigns in failure analysis and retrofit design. Test results were studied to find out the advantages of each technique, with the aim of proposing an optimized in-situ testing procedure. Standard static penetrometer, flat jack, thermographic and georadar in-situ tests were conducted. Traffic effects were analyzed by means of vibrational tests. The experimental analysis performed to investigate damage on the bridge structures shows the degree of reliability offered by each technique in evaluating specific information and reproducing the global behavior of the struct…

Empirical Analyses of Networks in Finance

2018

Abstract The recent global financial crisis has triggered a huge interest in the use of network concepts and network tools to better understand how instabilities can propagate through the financial system. The literature is today quite vast, covering both theoretical and empirical aspects. This review concentrates on empirical work, and associated methodologies, concerned with the evaluation of the fragility and resilience of financial and credit markets. The first part of the review examines the literature on systemic risk that arise from banks mutual exposures. These exposures stem primarily from interbank lending and derivative positions, but also, indirectly, from common holdings of oth…

Business, Finance and Organized Crime: Proposing a Risk-Based Approach for Governance in a Law and Economics Perspective (the 'Vigna Code')

2008

Nowadays the organized crime exploits the development of integration and globalization in the industrial, commercial and financial activities, taking advantage of the same networks that facilitate the legitimate transactions. In expanding their businesses the criminal organizations try to use unwitting firms and banks in order to find new profit opportunities and at the same time to camouflage the dishonest activities into the legal ones. The risk of pollution for the honest corporations is increasing. The aim of the paper is to propose an Anti-mafia governance Code (the Vigna Code) developing a risk - based approach in assessing and managing the risk of pollution into the firms, in order t…

Modeling the Dynamics of a Financial Index after a Crash

2004

Supply and demand are perhaps the most fundamental concepts in economics. In a financial market they reflects the orders of the agents to buy or sell a given asset. In turn the fluctuations of supply and demand influence the dynamics of the price of an asset, as, for example, a stock or a financial index. Therefore the dynamics of the price of an asset is affected by the actions and of the beliefs of the agents. It is known that the dynamics of the price of an asset is far from simple, Several stylized facts has been empirically discovered such as, for example, the fat tails in the return distribution and the clustered volatility. These stylized facts has been detected by considering long t…
