What factors relate to three profiles of perception of motor competence in young children?
2022
The study aims were to 1) examine profiles of perception of motor competence (PMC) in relation to actual motor competence (AMC), i.e. under-estimators (UEs), realistic estimators (REs) and over-estimators (OEs) and 2) investigate associations between the profiles and selected socioecological factors at the individual, family and environmental levels. PMC (Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence) and AMC (Test of Gross Motor Development-Third Edition) were administered to a representative sample of children from 37 childcare centres in Finland (n=441;6.2±0.6yrs;52% boys). Socioecological factors were investigated using a parental questionnaire. The three profiles were formed b…
Socioecological correlates of perceived motor competence in 5- to 7-year-old Finnish children
2019
We investigated child, family, and environmental factors associated with young children's perceptions of locomotor (LM) and object control (OC) skills. The participants comprised 472 children (6.22 ± 0.63) and their parents. The children were assessed for their perception of motor competence in LM and OC skills (using the pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for young children), and actual motor competence (Test of Gross Motor Development 3rd edition and Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder). Anthropometrics were calculated using the children's body mass index standard deviation scores. A parent questionnaire included questions about child factors (sex, child's independent w…
Comparative Analysis of fundamental motor skills in Finnish children with and without intellectual disability : A replication study
2021
Children with intellectual disability (ID) characteristically have motor problems. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in motor skills between Finnish children with and without ID, to compare the differences between children with ID with and without DS, and to systematically replicate Rintala & Loovis (2013). Twenty-five Finnish children (10 girls, 15 boys; M age = 8.7 yr.; SD 1.2) with ID were tested using the TGMD-3. Children with ID (including six children with DS) were matched according to age and gender with typically developing children in order to identify differences in motor skills. The findings revealed significant variability in the motor skills of children with …

Individual, Family, and Environmental Correlates of Motor Competence in Young Children: Regression Model Analysis of Data Obtained from Two Motor Tes…
2020
Physical activity and motor competence (MC) have been considered to be closely related and prevent childhood obesity. The aim of the study was two-fold: to examine MC measured with two different tools in relation to individual, family, and environmental correlates and to investigate gender differences in MC. The Test of Gross Motor Development-Third Edition (TGMD-3) was administered to three- to seven-year-old children (n = 945), while the Kö
The new version of the pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence in Spanish children: Evidence of validity and reliability. [La nueva ve…
2019
The purpose of this study was to i) examine reliability and construct validity of the pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence (PMSC) aligned to the third version of the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-3) in a sample of Spanish children; and to ii) analyse the validity of the PMSC and children’s perceived motor competence (MC) according to gender. A convenience sample of 361 children (55.7% boys) between 4 and 11 years-old participated. The pictorial scale of PMSC (19 items) was administered (a random subsample repeated the PMSC twice). Test-retest reliability using Intraclass Correlation Coefficients and construct validity using a Bayesian Structural Equation Modeling a…
Onko taito katsojan silmissä? : tutkijoiden välinen reliabiliteetti Test of Gross Motor Development-3-testistössä
2017
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää Test of Gross Motor Development 3-testistön (TGMD-3) luotettavuutta vertaamalla eri tutkijoiden tekemiä arviointeja ja niiden yhtenevyyttä. Tutkimus oli osa professori Pauli Rintalan johtamaa TGMD-3-projektia, jonka aineisto on kerätty Keski-Suomen alueen alakouluista vuoden 2014 aikana. Tutkimukseen osallistui 43 7–10-vuotiasta lasta.
Kehitysvammaisuuden yhteys lapsen motorisiin perustaitoihin
2017
Marttila, J. & Suominen, G. 2017. Kehitysvammaisuuden yhteys lapsen motorisiin perustai-toihin.
3–10-vuotiaiden lasten motoriset perustaidot
2016
Motoriset perustaidot ja niiden kehittyminen luovat perustan lapsen liikkumiselle ja kokonaisvaltaiselle fyysiselle aktiivisuudelle. Perustaidot tulisi oppia hallitsemaan ennen kouluikää. Lapsuuden aikaiset hyvät motoriset taidot ennustavat runsaampaa fyysistä aktiivisuutta myös myöhemmin nuoruusvuosina. Motorisilla taidoilla on lisäksi yhteyksiä lapsen kognitiivisiin taitoihin, terveystekijöihin sekä psykologista hyvinvointia kuvaaviin muuttujiin. Toistaiseksi Suomesta puuttuvat lasten motorisia taitoja mittaavat laajat kartoitukset, jonka vuoksi tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata, minkä- laiset ovat 3–10-vuotiaiden tyttöjen ja poikien motoriset perustaidot vuonna 2015. Tutkimuksee…
