Understanding LHC jets in the light of RHIC data

2012

Hard probes are a cornerstone in the ongoing program to determine the properties of hot and dense QCD matter as created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. LHC measurements have so far resulted in a wealth of high P_T data, opening new kinematic windows with high statistics. Yet on first glance, several observations are counter-intuitive and seem to contradict results from the RHIC high P_T program. This calls for a combined analysis of high P_T hadrons and reconstructed jets at RHIC and LHC in a unified framework testing a large number of theoretical models for both medium evolution and shower medium interactions against the systematics of the data. A consistent picture of shower-me…

The role of Delta(1700) excitation and rho production in double pion photoproduction

2001

Recent information on invariant mass distributions of the $\gamma p\to\pi^+\pi^0 n$ reaction, where previous theoretical models had shown deficiencies, have made more evident the need for new mechanisms, so far neglected or inaccurately included. We have updated a previous model to include new necessary mechanisms. We find that the production of the $\rho$ meson, and the $\Delta(1700)$ excitation, through interference with the dominant terms, are important mechanisms that solve the puzzle of the $\gamma p\to\pi^+\pi^0 n$ reaction without spoiling the early agreement with the $\gamma p\to\pi^+\pi^- p$ and $\gamma p\to\pi^0\pi^0 p$ reactions.

GW190521 as a Merger of Proca Stars: A Potential New Vector Boson of 8.7×10−13  eV

2021

Advanced LIGO-Virgo have reported a short gravitational-wave signal (GW190521) interpreted as a quasicircular merger of black holes, one at least populating the pair-instability supernova gap, that formed a remnant black hole of ${M}_{f}\ensuremath{\sim}142\text{ }\text{ }{M}_{\ensuremath{\bigodot}}$ at a luminosity distance of ${d}_{L}\ensuremath{\sim}5.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Gpc}$. With barely visible pre-merger emission, however, GW190521 merits further investigation of the pre-merger dynamics and even of the very nature of the colliding objects. We show that GW190521 is consistent with numerically simulated signals from head-on collisions of two (equal mass and spin) horizonless vecto…

Models of CP Violation

2003

After the discovery of CP violation in K decay, a host of theoretical models was proposed to allocate this phenomenon to known interactions. Assuming CPT invariance of all interactions, the observed CP-violating effects in K decay imply also T violation. In general, with CPT invariance, there are four combinations of violations possible to be treated in this chapter

Exclusive Semileptonic B and D Decays

1989

Interest in semileptonic (s.l.) bottom meson decays in the last few years has focused on the lepton energy end point spectrum. Theoretical models were needed for the description of the endpoint spectrum in order to be able to experimentally extract values for the ratio of KM matrix elements |Vbu/Vbc|. As approximately 90% of the total s.l. decay rate of bottom mesons is into the exclusive modes D and D* it was quite natural to try and model the endpoint spectrum by exclusive contributions. This approach was pioneered by GILMAN, ISGUR and WISE (GIW) in [1].

Exotic hyperons: Theoretical status and search perspectives in hyperon beam facilities

1992

The theoretical models that predict the existence of exotic hyperons made of more than three quarks are reviewed. We present the properties of exotic hyperons with strangenessS=−1 (quark contents $$sqqq\bar q$$ ),S=−2 ( $$ssqq\bar q$$ ) andS=−3 ( $$sssq\bar q$$ ) predicted by the sum rules for reggeon-particle scattering amplitudes. The inclusive cross sections for the production of these hyperons in hyperon-proton interactions are calculated. The cross sections turn out to be of the order of millibarns, thus opening a good perspective to encounter such exotic hyperons in the available hyperon beam facilities at CERN and FNAL. We also propose to study the Regge trajectories corresponding to…

Near-threshold $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron

2018

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $\gamma$ d -> $\pi^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $\pi^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $\gamma$ n -> $\pi^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.

Tomography Application to Complex Seismic Data of the Tjornes Fracture Zone (Iceland)

2014

The Tjornes Fracture Zone (TFZ) is an active seismic zone in Northeast Iceland. It plays a key role to understand the geodynamic movement and location of tectonic plates. However the seismic experiment can not be performed close to earthquake sources, because sources are mainly located in the Greenland Sea. The unusual geological structure of TFZ and the limited conditions of an experiment lead to significant deviations between real observations and the values that are calculated in accordance with theoretical models. Consequently, there is a loss of adequacy and stability of tomography systems. Outcomes of the method, which takes into account this problem, are analyzed in the present chapt…

Limit theorems and price changes in financial markets

1998

Abstract We discuss the relation between limit theorems in probability theory and price change statistics in financial markets. An analysis of the published empirical results and theoretical models show that the problem of the statistical properties of price (or index) changes is still open. By using the limit theorems of probability theory and the current assumption that stock prices are well described by martingales, we point out that the probability density function (PDF) of price changes is expected to belong to theclass of infinitely divisible PDFs.

Dove va la psicoterapia? Dove va la COIRAG?

2009

Where is psychotherapy going? Where is COIRAG going? - This note means to call attention to the present frontiers of psychotherapy based on the concepts of multiplicity, project planning, complexity, integrations, valuation, etc. Group thought and group clinic are identified as great ways of contributing significantly to the present evolution of psychotherapy in the world. Attention to theoretical models and to membership must be laicized and integrated with attention to standard procedures, working methods, the setting up of a personalized cure plan for each single patient, as well as to empirical, clinical and theoretical research. Moreover, the high potential today of adopting an analyti…
