Revisiting a vector-tensor theory of gravitation

2011

A certain vector-tensor theory of gravitation has been recently studied. In this theory, the zero-order energy density of the vector field could play the role of dark energy. In such a case, the question is: could the theory explain current cosmological observations as well as the so-called concordance model? Previous papers on the subject only consider a reduced number of current observations. We consider a wider set of observations including supernovae of type Ia, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, and the power spectrum of the energy density fluctuations. Results imply that, for negligible scalar perturbations of the vector field, the theory does not work.

Dynamics for a simple graph using the U(N) framework for loop quantum gravity

2012

The implementation of the dynamics in loop quantum gravity (LQG) is still an open problem. Here, we discuss a tentative dynamics for the simplest class of graphs in LQG: Two vertices linked with an arbitrary number of edges. We find an interesting global U(N) symmetry in this model that selects the homogeneous/isotropic sector. Then, we propose a quantum Hamiltonian operator for this reduced sector. Finally, we introduce the spinor representation for LQG in order to propose a classical effective dynamics for this model.

Creatable universes: A new approach

2010

We are interested in the non asymptotically flat space-times for which all the momenta (energy, 3-momentum and angular 4-momenta) are conserved in time. We call universes such space-times. Starting from the Weinberg definition of the momenta associated to a spacelike 3-surface, we give a coordinate prescription to properly define the energy of a universe. The prescription includes the vanishing of linear and angular 3-momenta. This result allows us to consider the case of universes with vanishing 4-momenta (creatable universes) in a consistent way.

Exotic shapes and clusterization of atomic nuclei

2010

Shape isomers, including superdeformed and hyperderformed states can be determined from the quasi-dynamical SU(3) symmetry based on the Nilsson-model. We investigate the possible binary clusterizations of these shape isomers. The allowed cluster-configurations give a hint for the favourable reaction channels for populating these states. Our semimicroscopic approach is largely based on symmetry considerations, combined with energetic preference calculations. As illustrative examples some results for the 36Ar, 40Ca and 56Ni nuclei are shown.

Status of a MIND type Neutrino Factory Far Detector

2013

A realistic simulation and analysis of a Magnetized Iron Neutrino Detector (MIND) has been developed for the purpose of understanding the potential sensitivity of such a facility. The status of the MIND simulation and reconstruction as discussed in the interim design report is reviewed here. Priorities for producing a more realistic simulation for a reference design report will be discussed, as will be the steps that have already been taken towards an improved simulation.

Super-Planckian axions from near-conformality

2019

We present a novel framework for obtaining large hierarchies in axion decay constants as well as trans-Planckian field excursions, with no need for tuning or a large number of fields. We consider a model with two or more conformal field theories with a common cutoff, which are linked by a gauged diagonal symmetry. This construction is dual to the geometry of a warped space with two or more throats glued at a common brane. Besides allowing for calculability, the dual picture makes it possible to interpret the hierarchy of decay constants entirely in terms of the geometry. Our setup can be applied to any framework which requires large field excursions or multiple hierarchies of decay constant…

Spiral Inflation

2015

We propose a novel scenario of primordial inflation in which the inflaton goes through a spiral motion starting from around the top of a symmetry breaking potential. We show that, even though inflation takes place for a field value much smaller than Planck scale, it is possible to obtain relatively large tensor to scalar ratio ($r \sim 0.1$) without fine tuning. The inflationary observables perfectly match Planck data.

BARYOGENESIS IN SUPERGRAVITY INFLATIONARY MODELS

1985

Abstract Realistic N=1 supergravity theories with a gravitino mass of order 1 TeV require a period of inflation to dilute the gravitino abundance. Moreover, if the gravitino is unstable the reheat temperature is bounded to be no greater than O(108 GeV). We show that such models may still have acceptable rates of baryosynthesis and discuss possible mechanisms.

Gauge-invariant proper self-energies and vertices in gauge-theories with broken symmetry

1990

Using the pinch technique, we show how to recover, from the {ital S} matrix of a spontaneously broken non-Abelian gauge theory, proper self-energies and vertices which are fully gauge invariant when one or more momenta are off shell. Explicit calculations are carried out at the one-loop level for gauge-boson self-energies and fermion--gauge-boson vertices in a simple SU(2) gauge theory with a Higgs boson. The same technique allows us to calculate, at one-loop order, a neutrino electromagnetic form factor which is gauge invariant at all photon momenta, thus resolving a long-standing problem. We show how massless Goldstone bosons, not present in the {ital S} matrix, must be introduced into Gr…

The radiation class: a set of temporal gauges

1993

We present in a path integral framework a class of gauges for QED that are both temporal and yet do not display the notorious singularity of the naive temporal gauge. These gauges follow from a generalised radiation gauge, where the Coulomb gauge fixingsis “smeared out”. We show that the use of two gauge fixings necessitates the incorporation of gauge dependent Coulomb interactions. The correctness of our theory is demonstrated in two ways: we can reduce to the true degrees of freedom and we show that it reproduces some gaugeinvariant results of perturbation theory. Although Landshoff's α prescription for the temporal gauge can be understood as a limit of our class, extra terms also appear.…
