General formulae for polarization observables in deuteron electrodisintegration and linear relations

Formal expressions are derived for all possible polarization observables in deuteron electrodisintegration with longitudinally polarized incoming electrons, oriented deuteron targets and polarization analysis of outgoing nucleons. They are given in terms of general structure functions which can be determined experimentally. These structure functions are Hermitean forms of theT-matrix elements which, in principle, allow the determination of allT-matrix elements up to an arbitrary common phase. Since the set of structure functions is overcomplete, linear relations among various structure functions exist which are derived explicitly.

Focus on quantum Einstein gravity

The gravitational asymptotic safety program summarizes the attempts to construct a consistent and predictive quantum theory of gravity within Wilson's generalized framework of renormalization. Its key ingredient is a non-Gaussian fixed point of the renormalization group flow which controls the behavior of the theory at trans-Planckian energies and renders gravity safe from unphysical divergences. Provided that the fixed point comes with a finite number of ultraviolet-attractive (relevant) directions, this construction gives rise to a consistent quantum field theory which is as predictive as an ordinary, perturbatively renormalizable one. Cosmological Applications of Extended Electromagnetism

Extended electromagnetism (EE) has been applied to cosmology in various papers. In all of them, the zero order energy density of the EE vector field plays the same role as vacuum energy. Perturbations of this field have been studied by using different approaches. Firstly, some basic equations and ideas are summarized and, then, the CMBFAST code is used to calculate the cosmic microwave background angular power spectrum for appropriate values of the EE parameters. Comparisons of the resulting spectra with a good observational one compatible with WMAP7 (Wilkinson map anisotropy probe 7 years data) seem to be promising. Newtonian and relativistic location systems

The theory of location systems involves the geometric and physical description of the protocols allowing the realization of coordinate systems. In this communication, the incidence of the space-time causal structure (Newtonian or relativistic) on the construction of location systems is remarked. Specifically, we focus our attention: (i) on the construction of Newtonian emission coordinates that are contrasted with those associated with relativistic positioning systems, and (ii) on the role played by non-absolute synchronizations (like the one provided by the local Solar time) in the comprehension of Newtonian and relativistic location systems.

Building a numerical relativistic non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics code for astrophysical applications

AbstractIncluding resistive effects in relativistic magnetized plasmas is a challenging task, that a number of authors have recently tackled employing different methods. From the numerical point of view, the difficulty in including non-ideal terms arises from the fact that, in the limit of very high plasma conductivity (i.e., close to the ideal MHD limit), the system of governing equations becomes stiff, and the standard explicit integrating methods produce instabilities that destroy the numerical solution. Measuring longitudinal wave speed in solids: two methods and a half

Three methods to analyse longitudinal wave propagation in metallic rods are discussed. Two of these methods also prove to be useful for measuring the sound propagation speed. The experimental results, as well as some interpretative models built in the context of a workshop on mechanical waves at the Graduate School for Pre-Service Physics Teacher Education, Palermo University, are described. Some considerations about observed modifications in trainee teachers' attitudes to utilizing physics experiments to build pedagogical activities are discussed.

Getting covariantly smeared sources into better shape

The use of covariantly smeared sources in hadronic correlators is a common method of improving the projection onto the ground state. Studying the dependence of the shape of such sources on the gauge field background, we find that localized fluxes of magnetic field can strongly distort the sources. This results in a reduction of the smearing radii that can be reached by iterative smearing prescriptions, in particular as the continuum limit is approached. As a remedy, we propose a novel covariant smearing procedure (“free-form smearing”) enabling the creation of arbitrarily shaped sources, including in particular Gaussians of arbitrary radius, as well as shapes with nodes, such as hydrogenic …

Coulomb sum rule for He4 and O16 from coupled-cluster theory

We demonstrate the capability of coupled-cluster theory to compute the Coulomb sum rule for the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ nuclei using interactions from chiral effective field theory. We perform several checks, including a few-body benchmark for $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. We provide an analysis of the center-of-mass contaminations, which we are able to safely remove. We then compare with other theoretical results and experimental data available in the literature, obtaining a fair agreement.
