Defect detection in additively manufactured titanium prosthesis by flying laser scanning thermography
2018
Abstract Metal additive manufacturing is nowadays a well-established technology for cutting edge applications in the automotive, aerospace, defense and medical sectors. Since additive metal deposition is basically a welding method, which creates parts by successively adding layers of material, there is a chance for defects like pores, cracks, inclusions and lack of fusion to develop. As a matter of fact, interlayer and intralayer defects are often observed in additive manufactured components. However, if one considers the typical end applications along with the high costs involved in metal additive manufactured components, a “zero defect” target is close to mandatory for this technology. Pl…
Flying laser spot thermography for the inspection of aerospace grade Fibre Metal Laminates
2017
This work analyses a Non Destructive Testing approach for the detection of interlayer disbonds in aerospace grade Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs). The NDT setup consists of a continuous laser, focused and moved over the material surface, while an IR thermal camera acquires its thermal footprint. A numerical model of the NDT setup is presented, where the material thermal response is analysed to evaluate the features of the defects signatures. In particular, the response from various types of FMLs is evaluated.
Carbon Nanotubes Dispersion Assessment in Nanocomposites by Means of a Pulsed Thermographic Approach
2020
The extensive production of polymer composites reinforced by carbon nanotube is limited by the absence of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods capable of assessing product quality to guarantee compliance with specifications. It is well known that the level of dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the polymer matrix is the parameter that, much more than others, can influence their enhancement capabilities. Here an active Infrared Thermography Non Destructive Testing(IR-NDT) inspection, joined with pulsed phase thermography (PPT), were applied for the first time to epoxy-CNT composites to evaluate the level of dispersion of the nanoparticles. The PPT approach was tested on three groups…
Fine Alignment of Thermographic Images for Robotic Inspection of Parts with Complex Geometries
2022
Increasing the efficiency of the quality control phase in industrial production lines through automation is a rapidly growing trend. In non-destructive testing, active thermography techniques are known for their suitability to allow rapid non-contact and full-field inspections. The robotic manipulation of the thermographic instrumentation enables the possibility of performing inspections of large components with complex geometries by collecting multiple thermographic images from optimal positions. The robotisation of the thermographic inspection is highly desirable to improve assessment speed and repeatability without compromising inspection accuracy. Although integrating a robotic setup fo…

On relation between J-integral and heat energy dissipation at the crack tip in stainless steel specimens
2019
In this paper, an experimental procedure to evaluate the elastic-plastic J-integral at the tip of a fatigue crack is presented. According to this new approach, the elastic component of the J-integral is derived from Thermoelastic Stress Analysis, while the plastic component of the J-integral is derived from the heat energy loss. An analytical link is proposed to apply this new experimental technique. Therefore, the elastic-plastic J-integral range was evaluated starting from infrared temperature maps measured in situ during crack propagation tests of AISI 304L stainless steel specimens. It was found that the range of the infrared thermography-based J-integral correlated well the crack growt…
In-plane conductive heat tansfer in solid and porous planar structures
2011
Methods for determining the in-plane thermal diffusivity in a planar sample geometry were developed. These methods were tested and verified by measuring planar metal samples with known thermal properties. The techniques used were based on heating the sample at one edge and recording the evolution of the temperature field in the sample by a thermographic camera. The temperature fields at different times were processed and then fitted by a solution to a heat equation describing the experimental setup, thermal diffusivity as one of the fitting parameters. In the first experimental setup the sample was placed in a weak constant flow of air, and the situation was improved in the second setup by …
Quantitative Analysis of Real-Time Infrared Thermography for the Assessment of Lumbar Sympathetic Blocks: A Preliminary Study
2021
Lumbar sympathetic blocks (LSBs) are commonly performed to treat pain ailments in the lower limbs. LSBs involve injecting local anesthetic around the nerves. The injection is guided by fluoroscopy which is sometimes considered to be insufficiently accurate. The main aim was to analyze the plantar foot skin temperature data acquired while performing LSBs in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) affecting the lower limbs. Forty-four LSBs for treating lower limb CRPS in 13 patients were assessed. Pain medicine physicians visualized the infrared thermography (IRT) video in real time and classified the performance depending on the observed thermal changes within the first 4 min. Th…
Infrared thermography assisted control for apples microwave drying
2012
A microwave based system was developed for drying of apple slices while on-line controlling their temperatures. An infrared thermography assisted control system allowed to realize temperature control by detecting the instantaneous maximum temperature among the samples under test instead of a chosen slice. The effectiveness of the system at hand in realizing temperature control both in space and in time was proven for three temperatures: 55, 65 and 75 C. Temperature fluctuations became larger both with time increasing and with rising temperature levels thus causing a negative impact on dried fruit quality. In fact apples slices dried at 75 C by microwave showed L⁄ (lightness) and white index…
