Dissociative adsorption of water on Au/MgO/Ag(001) from first principles calculations

2015

Abstract The molecular and dissociative adsorption of water on a Ag-supported 1 ML, 2 ML and 3 ML-a six atomic layer-thick MgO films with a single Au adatom is investigated using density functional theory calculations. The obtained results are compared to a bulk MgO(001) surface with an Au atom. On thin films the negatively charged Au strengthens the binding of the polar water molecule due to the attractive Au–H interaction. The adsorption energy trends of OH and H with respect to the film thickness depend on an adsorption site. In the case OH or H binds atop Au on MgO/Ag(001), the adsorption becomes more exothermic with the increasing film thickness, while the reverse trend is seen when th…

Structural properties of the quaternary Heusler alloy Co2Cr1−xFexAl

2007

The quarternary substitutional series Co2Cr1?xFexAl was investigated by means of surface and bulk sensitive techniques in order to exploit its structural and compositional properties. Both bulk and powder samples of the alloy series were investigated to obtain specific information about this material. The long range order was determined by means of x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction, while the site specific (short range) order was proved by extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The magnetic structure was investigated by M?ssbauer spectroscopy in transmission and scattering modes in order to compare and separate powder and bulk properties. The chemical composition was …

Reactivity of H2S and H2S/H2 Mixture With Molybdenum Oxide Thin Films Epitaxied on CoO (100) : Characterization by Rheed and Auger Spectroscopy

2010

Molybdenum-Cobalt composite oxide films were prepared by the evaporation of molybdenum trioxide on a fresh cleaved CoO (100) surface (Thickness = 10 A). The MoO3-CoO interface has been characterized simultaneously by reflexion high electron diffraction (RHEED) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). The thin film structure and composition depend on the annealing temperature. After a 300°C treatment, metallic cobalt islands nucleate at the interface thin film - CoO (100) and crystallize with the cubic FCC symmetry. After a 700°C treatment cobalt molybdate (a CoMoO4) islands grow. The metastable crystallites are epitaxied on CoO (100). After a 900°C treatment, the thin film consists of flat tw…

Relationships between strain, microstructure and oxide growth at the nano- and microscale

2008

In the present article, the relationships between oxidation processes, surface strains and the microstructure of duplex stainless steels were investigated. Specimens were oxidized at 500 °C under secondary vacuum for 1 h to form a thin oxide film (thickness in the range of 20-50 nm). Such specimens were considered as the model system for developing novel methods of analysis in understanding the behavior of passive films. The interfacial strain field after oxidation was measured experimentally at the microscale using the point grid method. On the other hand, the chemical composition of the oxide film was determined at the submicroscopic scale by means of local scanning Auger spectroscopy (wi…

Preparation by radio-frequency magnetron co-sputtering and characterization of thin films of lanthanum–strontium ferromanganites

2005

Abstract (La 0.8 Sr 0.2 )(Mn 1 −  y Fe y )O 3 ± δ films with y  = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1, a few hundred nanometers thick, were deposited onto polycrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia YSZ by a magnetron co-sputtering technique using individual targets of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3 . The deposition parameters, substrate temperature and gas pressure, were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and interferential microscopy for their effects on the morphological, chemical, topographic and crystallographic properties of films and YSZ-film interfaces. (La 0.8 Sr 0.2 )(Mn 1 −  y Fe y )O 3 ±  δ thin films were found to be …

An integrated approach to evaluating the tribo-contact for coated cutting inserts

2000

Abstract The orthogonal machining process when end turning medium carbon and austenitic stainless steels with cemented WC-Co tools coated with single-layer (TiC), two-layer (TiC/TiN), and three-layer (TiC/Al2O3/TiN) hard thin films was investigated. Extensive experimental investigations including the thermal, mechanical and tribological responses of the tribo-contact between the coating–substrate system and the chip, under different cutting conditions, were carried out. The study sheds light on the cutting forces, the interface temperatures and the tribo-contact conditions, including the friction energy dissipated at the tool–chip interface, the frictional heat flux conducting into either t…

Recent Advances in Electrochromics for Smart Windows Applications

1998

Electrochromic smart windows are able to vary their throughput of radiant energy by low-voltage electrical pulses. This function is caused by reversible shuttling of electrons and charge balancing ions between an electrochromic thin film and a transparent counter electrode. The ion transport takes place via a solid electrolyte. Charge transport is evoked by a voltage applied between transparent electrical conductors surrounding the electrochromic film/electrolyte/counter electrode stack. This review summarizes recent progress concerning (i) calculated optical properties of crystalline WO3, (ii) electrochromic properties of heavily disordered W oxide and oxyfluoride films produced by reactiv…

Efficient Benzodithiophene/Benzothiadiazole-Based n-Channel Charge Transporters

2017

A series of donor–acceptor (D-A) small molecules based on electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (BTD) and electron-rich benzodithiophene (BDT) featuring an A-D-A structure is presented. Exhaustive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies evidence their electroactive nature and their ability to form well-ordered thin films with broad visible absorptions and low band gaps (ca. 2 eV). Time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) studies unveil unexpected n-type charge transport displaying high electron mobilities around 0.1 cm2 V−1 s−1. Efficient electron transport properties are consistent with the low electron reorganization energies (0.11–0.17 eV) theoretically predicted.

Monte Carlo Study of Critical Point Shifts in Thin Films

2000

We report preliminary results of Monte Carlo simulations of critical point shifts in thin slit-like capillaries. By making use of the isomorphism with an Ising model subject to bulk and surface fields and employing a multi-cluster update algorithm with ghost-spin term we obtain the coexistence curve and the behavior at the critical point for various film thicknesses D.

Finite Size Effects in Thin Film Simulations

2003

Phase transitions in thin films are discussed, with an emphasis on Ising-type systems (liquid-gas transition in slit-like pores, unmixing transition in thin films, orderdisorder transitions on thin magnetic films, etc.) The typical simulation geometry then is a L xL x D system, where at the low confining L x L surfaces appropriate boundary “fields” are applied, while in the lateral directions periodic boundary conditions are used. In the z-direction normal to the film, the order parameter always is inhomogeneous, due to the boundary “fields” at the confining surfaces. When one varies the temperature T from the region of the bulk disordered phase to a temperature below the critical temperatu…
