Bayesian forecasting of demand time-series data with zero values

2013

This paper describes the development of a Bayesian procedure to analyse and forecast positive demand time-series data with a proportion of zero values and a high level of variability for the non-zero data. The resulting forecasts play decisive roles in organisational planning, budgeting, and performance monitoring. Exponential smoothing methods are widely used as forecasting techniques in industry and business. However, they can be unsuitable for the analysis of non-negative demand time-series data with the aforementioned features. In this paper, an unconstrained latent demand underlying the observed demand is introduced into the linear heteroscedastic model associated with the Holt-Winters…

A robust blind 3-D mesh watermarking based on wavelet transform for copyright protection

2019

Nowadays, three-dimensional meshes have been extensively used in several applications such as, industrial, medical, computer-aided design (CAD) and entertainment due to the processing capability improvement of computers and the development of the network infrastructure. Unfortunately, like digital images and videos, 3-D meshes can be easily modified, duplicated and redistributed by unauthorized users. Digital watermarking came up while trying to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a blind robust watermarking scheme for three-dimensional semiregular meshes for Copyright protection. The watermark is embedded by modifying the norm of the wavelet coefficient vectors associated with th…

A gap analysis of Internet-of-Things platforms

2016

We are experiencing an abundance of Internet-of-Things (IoT) middleware solutions that provide connectivity for sensors and actuators to the Internet. To gain a widespread adoption, these middleware solutions, referred to as platforms, have to meet the expectations of different players in the IoT ecosystem, including device providers, application developers, and end-users, among others. In this article, we evaluate a representative sample of these platforms, both proprietary and open-source, on the basis of their ability to meet the expectations of different IoT users. The evaluation is thus more focused on how ready and usable these platforms are for IoT ecosystem players, rather than on t…

A Robust Blind 3-D Mesh Watermarking Technique Based on SCS Quantization and Mesh Saliency for Copyright Protection

2019

Due to the recent demand of 3-D meshes in a wide range of applications such as video games, medical imaging, film special effect making, computer-aided design (CAD), among others, the necessity of implementing 3-D mesh watermarking schemes aiming to protect copyright has increased in the last decade. Nowadays, the majority of robust 3-D watermarking approaches have mainly focused on the robustness against attacks while the imperceptibility of these techniques is still a serious challenge. In this context, a blind robust 3-D mesh watermarking method based on mesh saliency and scalar Costa scheme (SCS) for Copyright protection is proposed. The watermark is embedded by quantifying the vertex n…

Low-Power Wide-Area Networks for Sustainable IoT

2019

Low-power wide-area (LPWA) networks are attracting extensive attention because of their abilities to offer low-cost and massive connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices distributed over wide geographical areas. This article provides a brief overview on the existing LPWA technologies and useful insights to aid the large-scale deployment of LPWA networks. Particularly, we first review the currently competing candidates of LPWA networks, such as narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and long range (LoRa), in terms of technical fundamentals and large-scale deployment potential. Then we present two implementation examples on LPWA networks. By analyzing the field-test results, we identify several chall…

Capture Aware Sequential Waterfilling for LoraWAN Adaptive Data Rate

2020

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is emerging as an attractive network infrastructure for ultra low power Internet of Things devices. Even if the technology itself is quite mature and specified, the currently deployed wireless resource allocation strategies are still coarse and based on rough heuristics. This paper proposes an innovative "sequential waterfilling" strategy for assigning Spreading Factors (SF) to End-Devices (ED). Our design relies on three complementary approaches: i) equalize the Time-on-Air of the packets transmitted by the system's EDs in each spreading factor's group; ii) balance the spreading factors across multiple access gateways, and iii) keep into account the c…

Modeling temporal treatment effects with zero inflated semi-parametric regression models: The case of local development policies in France

2017

International audience; A semi-parametric approach is proposed to estimate the variation along time of the effects of two distinct public policies that were devoted to boost rural development in France over a similar period of time. At a micro data level, it is often observed that the dependent variable, such as local employment, does not vary along time, so that we face a kind of zero inflated phenomenon that cannot be dealt with a continuous response model. We introduce a conditional mixture model which combines a mass at zero and a continuous response. The suggested zero inflated semi-parametric statistical approach relies on the flexibility and modularity of additive models with the abi…

Conditional particle filters with diffuse initial distributions

2020

Conditional particle filters (CPFs) are powerful smoothing algorithms for general nonlinear/non-Gaussian hidden Markov models. However, CPFs can be inefficient or difficult to apply with diffuse initial distributions, which are common in statistical applications. We propose a simple but generally applicable auxiliary variable method, which can be used together with the CPF in order to perform efficient inference with diffuse initial distributions. The method only requires simulatable Markov transitions that are reversible with respect to the initial distribution, which can be improper. We focus in particular on random-walk type transitions which are reversible with respect to a uniform init…

Rate-Splitting Random Access Mechanism for Massive Machine Type Communications in 5G Cellular Internet-of-Things

2021

The cellular Internet-of-Things has resulted in the deployment of millions of machine-type communication (MTC) devices. These massive number of devices must communicate with a single gNodeB (gNB) via the random access channel (RACH) mechanism. However, existing RACH mechanisms are inefficient when dealing with such large number of devices. To address this issue, we propose the rate-splitting random access (RSRA) mechanism, which uses rate splitting and decoding in rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) to improve RACH success rates. The proposed mechanism divides the message into common and private messages and enhances the decoding performance. We demonstrate, using extensive simulations, t…

Fall of Potential Measurement of the Earth Resistance in Urban Environments: Accuracy Evaluation

2019

Both Standards EN 50522 and IEEE 81 propose the fall of potential method (FPM) to carry out the measurement of the resistance to earth ( $R_{\text{ES}}$ ) of an earthing system (ES). However, in urban areas, the recommended distances between the ES and auxiliary electrodes are not easy to respect, due to the presence of buildings and tarmac. Furthermore, unknown buried metallic parts and interconnections among ESs could modify the earth potential profile of the area, affecting the measurement results. In this paper, the key-issues that influence the measured $R_{\text{ES}}$ when the FPM is used in an urban environment are presented. A parametric analysis, carried out with Comsol Multiphysic…
