When is Architecture Not Design?

2019

If there’s nothing more to architecture than design, and to its attendant thinking processes than design thinking, then core dimensions of the enterprise from production and use angles have no special character over and above their counterparts in general design.  Yet that does not appear to be true by the lights of architects or design specialists or the public at large.  So what is it, at the core or periphery of the discipline or its objects, that makes architecture not design?  The ways in which architecture and design constitute artistic enterprises, drawing on and promoting aesthetic interest, differ such that architecture is not, or at least not only, a branch of or variation on desi…

ENTREACTO / ENTR?ACTE Un film / A Film Chopin y los Sand, amor a cuatro bandas. Aproximación a la esfera privada de Fryderyk Chopin a partir de la pe…

2021

Two centuries later, the legend Chopin-Sand continues to supply the collective imaginary with vague readings, where historical truthfulness, let alone musical truth, is often contingent on the literary. The much discussed and bellicose romance between the Polish composer and the French novelist, George Sand, tends to some reductionism and evades an obvious reality: Fryderyk Chopin meets George Sand when she was already the mother of two children. This circumstance suggests reformulating certain romantic stereotypes. Jerzy Antczak?s biographical film Pragnienie Mi?o?ci (Chopin: Desire for Love, 2002) does not overlook this detail and makes it one of its narrative axes. The relationship betwe…

State of the art about use of IoT in education

2018

Every day the devices connected autonomously to the communication networks are increased. New applications arise for this type of interconnected objects, thus offering new alternatives for solutions of any kind, through the use of technology based on ubiquitous computing. That is why this work is inspired by these new technologies for its application in the educational field, with the purpose of contributing to the imposition of the use of IoT as a tool1 in the classroom.

Impacts of urban environment on the eco-physiological responses of trees: Tree-Talker (TT) new devices for the monitoring of trees

2019

Urban ecosystems will become increasingly important in the coming years. Urban trees are likely to increase in importance to society as their value in enhancing people's sense of well-being as well as the direct economic impacts are increasingly recognized. Urban forest monitoring data are essential to assess the impacts of tree planting campaigns and management programs. Tree-Talker (TT) is a device based ton the Internet of Things (IoT) technology for the monitoring of trees physical and physiological conditions. The TT allows the monitoring of (i) multispectral measurements of the sunlight transmitted through the canopy in 12 bands across the visible and near infra-red spectra; (ii) sap …

Malware Detection in Internet of Things (IoT) Devices Using Deep Learning

2022

Internet of Things (IoT) devices usage is increasing exponentially with the spread of the internet. With the increasing capacity of data on IoT devices, these devices are becoming venerable to malware attacks; therefore, malware detection becomes an important issue in IoT devices. An effective, reliable, and time-efficient mechanism is required for the identification of sophisticated malware. Researchers have proposed multiple methods for malware detection in recent years, however, accurate detection remains a challenge. We propose a deep learning-based ensemble classification method for the detection of malware in IoT devices. It uses a three steps approach; in the first step, data is prep…

Much ado about nothing? The intendant, the gentilshommes and the investigations into nobility in Burgundy (1664-1670)

2008

In 1664 Louis XIV did not spare the Burgundian nobles where furnishing proof of their entitlement to nobility was concerned. His quest for usurpers, which occurred throughout the French kingdom, generated severe misgivings among the gentilshommes, those nobles who had the right to sit in the provincial estates and feared that members of their Chambre would suffer pointless harassment. However, the process was conducted in an unexpectedly lenient manner, demonstrating that royal authority—through its local representative, the intendant Claude Bouchu—could be employed in a conciliatory fashion. The monarchical system, negotiated as much as imposed, should be understood within the framework of…

Click and drive: Consumer attitude to product development: Towards future transformations of the driving experience

2016

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to supply indications that may be useful in the process of development of new products that fully exploit the value potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the automotive industry. To this aim, the authors investigate how applications of the IoT to smart vehicles are perceived by consumers and describe different ways to increase their satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach – After a literature review focused on IoT and consumer behaviour in the automotive industry, the authors apply the Kano model to find the drivers for achieving customer satisfaction with new product developments in smartcars. Findings – Automotive companies need to…

Innovating in the textile industry: An uncoordinated dance between firms and their territory?

2020

Considering the process of innovati on development, this paper aimed to examine the eff ect of diff erent dimensions of proximity and the level of coordinati on that exists in a texti le cluster. This study employed a qualitati ve method, based on indepth interviews that were conducted with two leading fi rms in a texti le cluster in Valencia, Spain, which is subject to intense competi ti on from producers in Asia. Firms were selected according to the criteria of innovati on development and opportunity. This is a pilot study that precedes a more ambiti ous one. The results suggested that fi rms' innovati ons are developed in an isolated, disconti nuous, marginal, and uncoordinated way, and …

Post-entry internationalisation activity of retailers

2013

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework, based on empirical research, to explain the strategic processes of post-entry development in international retailing through consideration of the dynamic capabilities attributable to retailers. Design/methodology/approach – Case study approach of five international retail firms using secondary data and primary data gathered through interviews with firms ' executives and financial analysts. Findings – The research findings, in the light of the existing literature, suggest a framework that makes a distinction between first level or generic dynamic capabilities relevant to the internationalization process and second level or speci…
