AbstractThis paper refl on higher education from a critical social psychology perspective,…

Honouring the opening: Unfolding the rich ground between the philosophical thinking of Martin Heidegger and practice-based empirical work

2021

The aim of this article is to bring philosophical thinking closer to practice-based empirical work. Using Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, it offers a bridge between these two worlds, attempting to provide philosophical depth to the findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. This process unfolded through the appearance of three intertwined, potential, meaningful modes of being in the lifeworld: space as a condition for being and being for worlding the world; temporal and spatial self-being, the existence of multiple selves in time and space; and suffering and thriving as modes of being. The article extends the dialogue and concludes with key reflections and insight for research practic…

POSSIBILITY OF THE USAGE OF THE VISUAL RESEARCH METHODS WITHIN THE DESIGN EDUCATION

2017

Young people are forming and will form the environment of today and tomorrow. This reinforces the necessity of the young generation’s active involvement in the promotion of positive change. This approach cannot be otherwise as systemic and impossible without research and data analysis. Visual research methods, which are self-evident in design and art, are widely used in a number of other disciplines. To achieve an objective and reliable results, they often are combined with quantitative, analytic, generative and other methods. The aim of the paper - to discuss the ways of visual research methods' use in combination with systemic design thinking approach in finding new solutions in promotion…

Technology in Life

2016

Technological advancements have changed human life throughout history as technical inventions have emancipated people from many mundane, necessary tasks. The development of technical artefacts has long relied on the natural sciences and engineering. However, recent technical advancements—such as ubiquitous and multifunctional technologies as well as the emergence of social media—have made it necessary to approach design from a multidisciplinary perspective and to ground design thinking more on the understanding of human mind and human life. As the natural sciences and human research are in many respects different practices, it is time to discuss their mutually inclusive roles in design and …

The Facilitation of Design Students’ Spatial Perception in Study Process

2015

Spatial thinking is a considerable structural component of design students’ professional competence. Objective of the current study is to evaluate and promote spatial perception of students using in the learning process principles of universal design for learning (UDL). As the result a model for development of design students spatial perception has been developed and approbated.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PARADIGM SHIFT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN INDUSTRY AND DESIGN EDUCATION

2015

Literature about design development and the current situation of the essence of trends in this field allow for the defining of design as an independent branch. Analysis of design and education regulations highlights the conflict between reality and gaps that exist in European statistical standards and International Standard Classification of Education. The purpose of this study is to explore complex problems in the field of design and design education which determines the need for Paradigm Shift for further development of these branches, as well as to present proposals for definitions of key terms of design and offer proposals for a new design education classification. This research will sh…

A Robustness Approach to Reliability

2012

Reliability of products is here regarded with respect to failure avoidance rather than probability of failure. To avoid failures, we emphasize variation and suggest some powerful tools for handling failures due to variation. Thus, instead of technical calculation of probabilities from data that usually are too weak for correct results, we emphasize the statistical thinking that puts the designers focus on the critical product functions. Making the design insensitive to unavoidable variation is called robust design and is handled by (i) identification and classification of variation, (ii) design of experiments to find robust solutions, and (iii) statistically based estimations of proper safe…

SCIENTIFIC THINKING: THE BACKBONE OF MODERN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

2014

Science and Technology Education (STE) along with Artistic and Pragmatic Education today is continuously and fast developing branch of education to satisfy actual needs of modern life. It follows the development of scientific research of real life phenomena and implementation of corresponding results in practice. In other words, changes within our life are closely connected with corresponding changes in our education, because educational activities of any person as well as society in total mean specially organized gaining of life experience (knowledge, values, skills) for life (cognition, consideration, behaviour).

Exploring Finnish university students' perceived level of critical thinking

2015

Critical thinking is believed to be a 21 st century skill that many employers consider crucial when hiring recent graduates. However, it is debated whether critical thinking should be taught in academic foreign language courses at the tertiary level, which primarily aim to develop students’ language and communication skills. This localized, exploratory research examines Finnish university students’ self-reported critical thinking skills and dispositions after completing the compulsory academic English courses. The aim of the research is to examine what skills and dispositions students feel competent in, and discover if there is a correlation between students’ self-reported critical thinking…
