Comparative Study of Liposoluble Vitamins and Fatty Acids from Sea Buckthorn Oil, Wheat Germ Oil and Fish Oil

2018

Abstract An important role in human nutrition is played by fats, both of plant and animal origin. Fats are a category of foods rich in liposoluble vitamins and fatty acids. They are widely used in nutrition, in cosmetics, in the content of creams as well as in pharmaceutical products, in the form of dietary supplements, such as capsules with oils rich in fatty acids and the addition of liposoluble vitamins. The objective of this paper was to study the content in vitamins and fatty oils of two vegetable oils (wheat germ and sea buckthorn oils) and an animal oil (fish oil). The results show that these oils are rich in liposoluble vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Hence, t…

Modeling the distribution of thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata) in the southern Grand Banks (Newfoundland, Canada)

2019

Globally, commercial fisheries have had a strong impact on elasmobranch populations directly through high catch rates and indirectly through bycatch. Consequently, the abundance of many species is declining to the extent that some are considered under threat of extinction. Regionally, this negative trend is also evident in the international waters of the southern Grand Banks (off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada), where the occurrence of the thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata) has declined by nearly 70% in recent decades. This study used Bayesian species distribution models to investigate the habitat preference and biomass trends of the thorny skate during a 14-year period (2003–2017), linki…

Corrigendum: Seabuckthorn Pulp Oil Protects against Myocardial Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury in Rats through Activation of Akt/eNOS

2016

Seabuckthorn (SBT) pulp oil obtained from the fruits of seabuckthorn [Hippophae rhamnoides L. (Elaeagnaceae)] has been used traditionally for its medicinal and nutritional properties. However, its role in ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury of myocardium in rats has not been elucidated so far. The present study reports the cardioprotective effect of SBT pulp oil in IR-induced model of myocardial infarction in rats and underlying mechanism mediating activation of Akt/eNOS signaling pathway. Male albino Wistar rats were orally administered SBT pulp oil (5, 10, and 20 ml/kg/day) or saline for 30 days. On the day 31, ischemia was induced by one-stage ligation of left anterior descending coronary a…

A systematic approach to medical decision-making of uncommon clinical pictures: A case of ulcerative skin lesions by palm tree thorn injury and a one…

2005

In clinical practice, the clinician is challenged with symptoms and/or signs at times apparently insoluble by diagnostic and/ or therapeutic means. We propose that in these cases, we have to use an EBM approach in which evidence may be looked up in every available clinical report and bibliographic databases are used for searching that evidence. We report on a case of ulcerative skin lesions apparently insoluble by expert dermatologists following a conventional diagnostic and therapeutic process. We use this case report for illustrating a systematic approach to resolve diagnostic and therapeutic questions using a bibliographic database search (like MEDLINE and EMBASE). Both a systematic appr…

Le spine di Afranio: a proposito di Afran. fr. 1 R.3

2022

In fr. I R.3 (Afranius’ Abducta) we can recognise an imagery connected to the rhetorical-philosophical Stoic tradition. Indeed, the adjective senticosus introduces the metaphor of thorns, a stylistic device associated with the Stoic sermo. This interpretation seems to be confirmed by Apuleius’ use of this adjective in Florida 18, which contains the famous ‘sophism of Protagoras’.

MERCES… SENTICOSA. Immaginari stoici nei Floridia di Apuleio

2020

Merces… senticosa. Stoic images in the Florida of Apuleius · In the Florida Apuleius makes use of images related to the rhetorical-philosophical stoic tradition. In particular, in Fl. 18 Apuleius describes the famous sophism of Protagoras, by using, trought an intellectual virtuosity, the metaphor of thorns, a stylistic device linked with the characterization of the Stoicism.

Sojas pupiņu un smiltsērkšķu ekstraktu saturoša matu kopšanas līdzekļa izstrāde un efektivitātes noteikšana

2018

The natural history of Echinorhynchus bothniensis Zdzitowiecki and Valtonen, 1987 (Acanthocephala) in a high Arctic lake

2015

The acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus bothniensis Zdzitowiecki and Valtonen, 1987 differs from most other species in the genus Echinorhynchus Zoega in Müller, 1776 by infecting mysids (order Mysida) instead of amphipods (order Amphipoda) as intermediate hosts. Here we report on the occurrence of E. bothniensis in mysids (Mysis segerstralei Audzijonytė et Väinölä) and in its fish definitive hosts in a high Arctic lake. Out of 15907 sampled mysids, 4.8% were infected with a mean intensity of 1.05 worms (range 1–5), although there was notable variation between samples taken in different years and sites. Larger mysids appear more likely to be infected. Of five fish species sampled, charr,Salvelinu…

Sexual segregation of Echinorhynchus borealis von Linstow, 1901 (Acanthocephala) in the gut of burbot (Lota lota Linnaeus)

2015

Helminths often occupy defined niches in the gut of their definitive hosts. In the dioecious acanthocephalans, adult males and females usually have similar gut distributions, but sexual site segregation has been reported in at least some species. We studied the intestinal distribution of the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus borealis von Linstow, 1901 (syn. of E. cinctulus Porta, 1905) in its definitive host, burbot (Lota lota Linnaeus). Over 80% of female worms were found in the pyloric caeca, whereas the majority of males were in the anterior two-thirds of the intestine. This difference was relatively consistent between individual fish hosts. Worms from different parts of the gut did not dif…

An automatic tool for reconstructing monthly time-series of hydro-climatic variables at ungauged basins

2017

Abstract Integrative information models for filling/reconstructing hydro-climatic time-series are required for a variety of practical applications. A GIS-based model for a rapid and reliable assessment of monthly time-series of several key hydro-climatic variables at the basin scale, is here developed as plug-in and applied to the entire region of Sicily (Italy). The plug-in, once the desired basin outlet section and time-window are selected, uses appropriate spatial techniques and algorithms to identify its drainage area and estimate the corresponding mean areal rainfall and temperatures time-series. A recent regional regressive rainfall-runoff model is successively applied for the assessm…
