A Scheme for Continuous Input to the Tsetlin Machine with Applications to Forecasting Disease Outbreaks

2019

In this paper, we apply a new promising tool for pattern classification, namely, the Tsetlin Machine (TM), to the field of disease forecasting. The TM is interpretable because it is based on manipulating expressions in propositional logic, leveraging a large team of Tsetlin Automata (TA). Apart from being interpretable, this approach is attractive due to its low computational cost and its capacity to handle noise. To attack the problem of forecasting, we introduce a preprocessing method that extends the TM so that it can handle continuous input. Briefly stated, we convert continuous input into a binary representation based on thresholding. The resulting extended TM is evaluated and analyzed…

Enabling XCSF to cope with dynamic environments via an adaptive error threshold

2020

The learning classifier system XCSF is a variant of XCS employed for function approximation. Although XCSF is a promising candidate for deployment in autonomous systems, its parameter dependability imposes a significant hurdle, as a-priori parameter optimization is not feasible for complex and changing environmental conditions. One of the most important parameters is the error threshold, which can be interpreted as a target bound on the approximation error and has to be set according to the approximated function. To enable XCSF to reliably approximate functions that change during runtime, we propose the use of an error threshold, which is adapted at run-time based on the currently achieved …

Image boundaries detection: from thresholding to implicit curve evolution

2014

The development of high dimensional large-scale imaging devices increases the need of fast, robust and accurate image segmentation methods. Due to its intrinsic advantages such as the ability to extract complex boundaries, while handling topological changes automatically, the level set method (LSM) has been widely used in boundaries detection. Nevertheless, their computational complexity limits their use for real time systems. Furthermore, most of the LSMs share the limit of leading very often to a local minimum, while the effectiveness of many computer vision applications depends on the whole image boundaries. In this paper, using the image thresholding and the implicit curve evolution fra…

Nasal chemosensory tests: biomarker between dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson disease dementia.

2020

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson disease dementia (PDD) are progressive and disabling neurodegenerative disorders, which are often misdiagnosed due to theirs overlapping clinical and paraclinical features. Nevertheless, their adequate management requires an accurate differential diagnosis. The main aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of olfactory and trigeminal nasal testing for the differential diagnosis between DLB and PDD. METHODS: Odor thresholds to three odorants differentially activating the olfactory and trigeminal systems were assessed in patients with DLB, PDD and healthy controls (n = 20 per group). RESULTS: Odor thresholds were significant…

A Dichoptic Edge Effect Resulting from Binocular Contour Dominance

1980

If one eye sees a bright field on a dark surround while a homogeneous background is presented to the other eye, then a distinct dark zone appears at the outer borders of the field. If the surround is coloured, then the zone is of corresponding hue. The effect disappears if the edge of the field can be fused with a bar of appropriate contrast. The influence of parameters such as pattern contrast and size were studied quantitatively. A model is proposed relating the effect to receptive-field organisation and the fusion process.

The following protocol is intended to respond to the requirements set by the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directives (MSFD) for the D10C3 Criteria reported in the Commission Decision (EU), related to the amount of litter ingested by marine animals. Standardized methodologies for extracting litter items ingested from dead sea turtles along with guidelines on data analysis are provided. The protocol starts with the collection of dead sea turtles and classification of samples according to the decomposition status. Turtle necropsy must be performed in authorized centers and the protocol described here explains the best procedure for gastrointestinal (GI) tract isolation. The three…

Estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters for bacteriological status of the udder, somatic cell score, and milk yield in dairy sheep using a thre…

2013

Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for infection status (INF), as indicator of mastitis, SCS (i.e., log-transformed SCC), and milk yield (MY), by using a Gibbs sampling algorithm. The data comprised 17,843 test-day records of 2040 ewes. The pedigree file included 2948 animals. A bivariate variance component analysis was performed using the TM software. Fixed effects considered in the analysis were litter size, parity, flock by test-day interaction, year by season of lambing interaction, and stage of lactation; whereas the animal, and the permanent environmental effect within and across lactations were considered as random as well as the error. Flat p…

Validation of the simplified Animal Naming Test as primary screening tool for the diagnosis of covert hepatic encephalopathy

2019

Diagnosis of covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE) is time consuming in clinical practice. Recently, a new diagnostic tool - the simplified Animal Naming Test (S-ANT1) - was presented with promising results in an Italian cohort. The aim of the present study was to validate S-ANT1 in a cohort of cirrhotic patients from a German tertiary referral centre.143 cirrhotic patients and 37 healthy controls were enrolled. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) grade 1 (HE1) was clinically diagnosed according to the West-Haven Criteria. Critical flicker frequency and Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score were used to detect minimal HE (MHE). All participants were additionally examined by S-ANT1.58 (40.6%) pati…

Value of the critical flicker frequency in patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy

2007

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is mainly diagnosed using psychometric tests such as the psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES). Despite the clinical and social relevance of MHE, psychometric testing is not widespread in routine clinical care. We assessed the usefulness of the critical flicker frequency (CFF), for the diagnosis of MHE and for the prediction of the development of overt episodes of HE. The normal range of PHES in the Spanish population was evaluated in a control group. Subsequently, 114 patients with cirrhosis and 103 healthy controls underwent both PHES and CFF tests. A diagnosis of MHE was made when the PHES was lower than −4 points. Patients were followed-up…
