Mass spectrometry is an important experimental technique in the field of proteomics. However, analysis of certain mass spectrometry data faces a combination of two challenges: First, even a single experiment produces a large amount of multi-dimensional raw data and, second, signals of interest are not single peaks but patterns of peaks that span along the different dimensions. Modified morphological correlation based on bit-map representations.

Pattern recognition with high discrimination can be achieved with a morphological correlator. A modification of this correlator is carried out by use of a binary slicing process instead of linear thresholding. Although the obtained correlation result is not identical to the conventional morphological correlation, it requires fewer calculations and provides even higher discrimination. Two optical experimental implementations of this modified morphological correlator as well as some experimental results are shown.

An Efficient Method for the Visualization of Spectral Images Based on a Perception-Oriented Spectrum Segmentation

We propose a new method for the visualization of spectral images. It involves a perception-based spectrum segmentation using an adaptable thresholding of the stretched CIE standard observer colormatching functions. This allows for an underlying removal of irrelevant channels, and, consequently, an alleviation of the computational burden of further processings. Principal Components Analysis is then used in each of the three segments to extract the Red, Green and Blue primaries for final visualization. A comparison framework using two different datasets shows the efficiency of the proposed method.

Occupational hygiene in a Finnish drum composting plant

Bioaerosols (microbes, dust and endotoxins) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined in the working air of a drum composting plant treating source-separated catering waste. Different composting activities at the Oulu drum composting plant take place in their own units separated by modular design and constructions. Important implication of this is that the control room is a relatively clean working environment and the risk of exposure to harmful factors is low. However, the number of viable airborne microbes was high both in the biowaste receiving hall and in the drum composting hall. HAPPY Dyes as Light Amplification Media in Thin Films

A series of 1Hamorphous tri-phenyl pyridine (HAPPY) dyes have been synthesized from luminescent triphenyl-group-containing 2-methyl-6-styryl-substituted-4H-pyran-4-ylidene derivatives in reactions with benzylamine and investigated for suitability as solution-processable light-emitting medium components in thin films for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Fluorescence and amplified spontaneous emission of glass forming compounds containing styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment

Potential of glassy films of newly synthesised low molecular weight organic molecules for light amplification and lasing applications has been investigated by analysing fluorescence, transient differential absorption and amplified spontaneous emission properties. These non-symmetric and symmetric molecules contain styryl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene fragment with three different electron acceptor groups: dicyanomethylene, barbituric acid, indene-1,3-dione. Solid state solvation effect and reduced amplified spontaneous emission threshold value of glass forming DCM derivative in PMMA films

Abstract Molecule crystallization is one of the limitations for obtaining high-gain organic laser systems. One of the examples is well known red laser dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM). The lowest threshold value of amplified spontaneous emission was achieved by doping 2 wt% of DCM molecule in tris-(8-hydroxy quinoline) aluminum (Alq3) matrix. Further increase of the DCM dye concentration makes the system less efficient as its threshold value increases. In-situ synthesis of thiophene-based multifunctional polymeric networks with tunable conductivity and high photolithographic performance

Abstract Design of novel multifunctional polymeric materials combining electrically conducting properties with patterning capability is a significant challenge in materials science. Herein, we report on the synthesis of multifunctional interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) by the in-situ oxidative polymerization of thiophene-based monomers with Cu(ClO 4 ) 2 inside a novolac-based photoresist. The resulting IPNs show conductivities up to 20 S/cm depending on the monomer properties.
