A performance analysis of block ACK scheme for IEEE 802.11e networks

The demand for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local-area networks (WLANs) has been drastically increasing along with many emerging applications and services over WLAN. However, the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) is known to be limited in terms of its throughput performance due to the high MAC overhead, such as interframe spaces (IFS) or per-frame based acknowledgement (ACK) frame transmissions. Analysis of the Non-Transparent In-Band Relays in the IEEE 802.16 Multi-Hop System

This paper presents extensive dynamic simulations of the non-transparent in-band relays working in the distributed scheduling mode. The simulation results show that in-band relays can improve noticeably the spectral efficiency without acquiring an additional radio spectrum. Also, packet transmission delays become smaller. An important outcome of the dynamic simulations is that it is very crucial to choose a correct relay zone size where the base station and relay nodes exchange data. Otherwise, throughput fairness of the whole system declines. It indicates an importance of the relay zone size adjustment algorithm that the base station must run.

Adaptive contention resolution parameters for the IEEE 802.16 networks

In the IEEE 802.16 networks, the base station allocates resources to subscriber stations based on their QoS requirements and bandwidth request sizes. A subscriber station can send a bandwidth request when it has an uplink grant allocated by the base station or by taking part in the contention resolution mechanism. This paper presents analytical calculations for parameters that control the contention resolution process in the IEEE 802.16 networks. Confocal detection in digital scanned laser light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (DSLM) has been established as a gold standard method to improve image quality. The selective line detection of a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor camera (CMOS) working in rolling shutter mode allows the rejection of out-of-focus and scattered light, thus reducing background signal during image formation. Wireless energy and information transmission in FSO and RF-FSO links

We propose and analyze a wireless energy and information transmission scheme in free-space optical (FSO) links. The results are presented for both quasi-static and fast-fading conditions. We derive closed-form expressions for throughput, outage probability, and optimal power allocation optimizing the system throughput/outage probability. Finally, we complement the FSO link with an additional radio frequency (RF) link to create a hybrid RF-FSO system and reduce the system outage probability. The results show that joint implementation of the RF and FSO links leads to considerable performance improvement, compared to the cases with only FSO-based communication.

An Experimental Testbed and Methodology for Characterizing IEEE 802.11 Network Cards

It has been observed that IEEE 802.11 commercial cards produced by different vendors show a different behavior in terms of perceived throughput or access delay. Performance differences are evident both when the cards contend alone to the channel, and when heterogeneous cards contend together. Evaluation of an Alternative for Increasing Switch Radix

In large switch-based interconnection networks, increasing the switch radix results in a decrease in the total number of network components. In this paper we evaluate an interesting strategy for building high-radix switches going beyond the integration scale bounds. This approach is independent of the evolution of single-chip switches and will remain valid as integration scale keeps evolving. Simulation results show that with a correct internal switch design, this kind of switches achieves almost the same performance as single-chip switches with the same radix, which would be unfeasible with current integration scale.
