Radical Besinnung in Formale und transzendentale Logik (1929)
2018
This paper explicates Husserl’s usage of what he calls “radical Besinnung” in Formale und transzendentale Logik (1929). Husserl introduces radical Besinnung as his method in the introduction to FTL. Radical Besinnung aims at criticizing the practice of formal sciences by means of transcendental phenomenological clarification of its aims and presuppositions. By showing how Husserl applies this method to the history of formal sciences down to mathematicians’ work in his time, the paper explains in detail the relationship between historical critical Besinnung and transcendental phenomenology. Ultimately the paper suggests that radical Besinnung should be viewed as a general methodological fram…
Case Studies in Family Business Research
2012
Based on a review of 63 case studies from the family business field, the authors emphasize the potential of critical realist case studies for family business scholars. The review revealed that the positivistic case study introduced by Yin and Eisenhardt is the disciplinary convention of family business field. Since there are several events and mechanisms underspinning social phenomena, such as succession, they need to be both explanained (erklären, matching the positivist view) and understood (verstehen, matching the constructivist/interpretive view) which is the staring point of critical realism (Bhaskar, 1998; Sayer, 1992). Hence critical realis ontology can be very fruitful for future st…

Demystifying the Influential IS Legends of Positivism
2018
Positivism has been used to establish a standard that Information Systems (IS) research must meet to be scientific. According to such positivistic beliefs in IS, scientific research should: 1) be generalizable, 2) focus on stable independent variables, 3) have certain ontological assumptions, and 4) use statistical or quantitative methods rather than qualitative methods. We argue that logical positivist philosophers required none of these. On the contrary, logical positivist philosophers regarded philosophizing in general and ontological considerations in particular as nonsense. Moreover, the positivists’ preferred empirical research method was not a survey, but rather a qualitative observa…
Demystifying the Influential IS Legends of Positivism : Response to Lee’s Commentary
2020
We respond to Lee’s (forthcoming) commentary on our article “Demystifying the Influential IS Legends of Positivism” (Siponen & Tsohou [S&T], 2018). Lee offers four arguments against our analyses and conclusions in S&T (2018). First, because logical positivism (LP) has been discredited, he contends it cannot be used as a normative standard in IS. We clarify that our conclusions in S&T (2018) point to (1) the lack of justification for certain IS beliefs, and (2) a misunderstanding rather than legitimacy of LP as a philosophy of science. Second, Lee argues that IS researchers characterizing positivism never said they were following the tenets of LP. We provide evidence to show some influential…

Eräitä tieteenteorian peruskysymyksiä ihmistutkimuksen näkökulmasta
1994
Tämä tutkimus koostuu eräiden tieteenteorian keskeisten ongelma-alueiden esittelystä, teoreettisista analyyseista ja analyysien pohjalta teoreettisten näkökulmien hahmottamisesta. Tämän työn pohjana on luentosarja, jonka tekijä on useita kertoja pitänyt lähinnä psykologian ja kasvatustieteen opiskelijoille, joiden opinnot ovat edenneet syventävien opintojen vaiheeseen tai jatko-opintoihin. Tämä lähtökohta huomioon ottaen työ on tarkoitettu lähinnä opiskelumateriaaliksi, johdannoksi tiedon ja tieteen perusteisiin.
Essays concerning Hume's natural philosophy
2016
The subject of this essay-based dissertation is Hume’s natural philosophy. The dissertation consists of four separate essays and an introduction. These essays do not only treat Hume’s views on the topic of natural philosophy, but his views are placed into a broader context of history of philosophy and science, physics in particular. The introductory section outlines the historical context, shows how the individual essays are connected, expounds what kind of research methodology has been used, and encapsulates the research contributions of the essays. The first essay treats Newton’s experimentalist methodology in gravity research and its relation to Hume’s causal philosophy. It is argued tha…
