Decoding attentional states for neurofeedback Mindfulness vs. wandering thoughts
2018
Abstract Neurofeedback requires a direct translation of neuronal brain activity to sensory input given to the user or subject. However, decoding certain states, e.g., mindfulness or wandering thoughts, from ongoing brain activity remains an unresolved problem. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to acquire brain activity during mindfulness meditation and thought-inducing tasks mimicking wandering thoughts. We used a novel real-time feature extraction to decode the mindfulness, i.e., to discriminate it from the thought-inducing tasks. The key methodological novelty of our approach is usage of MEG power spectra and functional connectivity of independent components as features …
Reliability of upper-limb diaphyseal mineral and soft-tissue measurements using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT)
2018
Objectives: To quantify between-day reliability of upper-body diaphyseal measurements (radius, ulna, humerus) using peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT). - Methods: Fourteen males (age: 25.8±2.3 years,) underwent repeat pQCT scans (one to two days apart) at mid-shaft ulna (60%), mid-shaft radius (60%) and mid-shaft humerus (50%) cross-sections of the non-dominant limb. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CV) were determined for musculoskeletal morphology variables. - Results: Reliability was excellent (ICC: 0.76–0.99; CV: 1.3– 7.3) at all sites for bone mass, stress-strain index, endocortical and pericortical radius, endocortical volumetric…
State of the Art Literature Review on Network Anomaly Detection
2018
As network attacks are evolving along with extreme growth in the amount of data that is present in networks, there is a significant need for faster and more effective anomaly detection methods. Even though current systems perform well when identifying known attacks, previously unknown attacks are still difficult to identify under occurrence. To emphasize, attacks that might have more than one ongoing attack vectors in one network at the same time, or also known as APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) attack, may be hardly notable since it masquerades itself as legitimate traffic. Furthermore, with the help of hiding functionality, this type of attack can even hide in a network for years. Additi…
A Novel Deep Learning Stack for APT Detection
2019
We present a novel Deep Learning (DL) stack for detecting Advanced Persistent threat (APT) attacks. This model is based on a theoretical approach where an APT is observed as a multi-vector multi-stage attack with a continuous strategic campaign. To capture these attacks, the entire network flow and particularly raw data must be used as an input for the detection process. By combining different types of tailored DL-methods, it is possible to capture certain types of anomalies and behaviour. Our method essentially breaks down a bigger problem into smaller tasks, tries to solve these sequentially and finally returns a conclusive result. This concept paper outlines, for example, the problems an…

Information systems development in developing countries : risk management and sustainability analysis in Nigerian software companies
2002
The expectations of IT for socio-economic and human development in developing countries have been high, but the real benefits and the positive impacts have been somewhat disappointing. The harsh socio-economic and infrastructural context makes the sustainability of an IS a major issue. Technology transfer to Africa has been too dependent on external factors, like international aid donors, and emphasized on technology itself. There is a need for locally developed, appropriate information systems, which are based on local needs and structures. In addition, the development should be done by using appropriate methods in an African context. This thesis is part of the INDEHELA-Methods project, wh…

Amigaskene, alakulttuuri tietokoneen puitteissa : kuvauksia alakulttuurin ja teknologioiden yhteenkietoutumisesta
2008
Tutkielman aiheena on tietokoneharrastajien alakulttuuri, jota kutsutaan Amigaskeneksi. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan ensinnäkin niitä kulttuurin ja tietotekniikan puitteita, joiden viitekehyksessä tietokone harrastajat toimivat. Alakulttuurina Amigaskene sijoittuu yhtäältä sitä ympäröivien kulttuurien, kuten vallitsevan yhteiskunnan ja Amigaskeneä edeltävän skene-alakulttuurin, kehiin ja toisaalta Amigan mahdollistamaan tietotekniseen viitekehykseen. Lisäksi tutkielmassa tarkastellaan teknologiavälitteisen alakulttuurin puitteisiin rakentuneita kulttuurisia aineksia, joiden johdosta alakulttuuri erottuu kulttuuriksi. Tutkielmassa käytetään alakulttuurin määritelmää ja toimijaverkostoteoriaa a…

With more than 50 years of literature, fuzzy logic has gradually progressed from an emerging field to a developed research domain, incorporating the sub-domain of mathematical fuzzy logic (MFL) [...]
Stubborn sets, frozen actions, and fair testing
2021
Many partial order methods use some special condition for ensuring that the analysis is not terminated prematurely. In the case of stubborn set methods for safety properties, implementation of the condition is usually based on recognizing the terminal strong components of the reduced state space and, if necessary, expanding the stubborn sets used in their roots. In an earlier study it was pointed out that if the system may execute a cycle consisting of only invisible actions and that cycle is concurrent with the rest of the system in a non-obvious way, then the method may be fooled to construct all states of the full parallel composition. This problem is solved in this study by a method tha…
