The national core curriculum for basic education in Finland emphasizes language aware education (kielitietoisuus) with each adult a language model and language teacher (FNBE, 2014: 28). This approach recognises pupil diversity and the need to address language as a key tool in teaching and learning as well as for societal integration. In language aware education, the responsibility for pupils’ language development is shared across the school community. Discussions around this issue recognise the need to support heritage languages as well as the value of plurilingualism. PsL Anne Puolakanaho selvitti väitöstutkimuksessaan, miten leikki-ikäisten 3 - 5-vuotiaiden lasten kielelliset ja kognitiiviset taidot ovat yhteydessä lukemisen virheettömyyteen ja sujuvuuteen kouluiässä. Puolakanaho tutki myös, missä määrin dysleksiaa eli sitkeää lukemisvaikeutta voidaan ennakoida lapsikohtaisesti, yksilöllisten riskitekijöiden perusteella jo huomattavasti ennen esikouluikää. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, kuinka esiopettajat käyttivät kirjallisuutta ja mitä he pitivät tärkeänä tukiessaan lasten kielellistä kehitystä ja kehittyvää lukutaitoa kirjallisuutta käyttäen. Tutkimus on laadullinen ja se toteutettiin haastattelemalla neljää esiopetuksessa työskentelevää varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaa, joista jatkossa käytetään nimitystä esiopettaja. Aineisto analysoitiin teoriaohjaavalla sisällönanalyysillä. Monipuolinen kirjallisuus oli tärkeässä asemassa esiopettajien tukiessa lasten kielellistä tietoisuutta ja kehittyvää lukutaitoa. The development of phonological awareness (PA) before school age was modeled in association with the development of vocabulary and letter knowledge, home literacy environment (HLE), children's reading interest, and beginning reading skill in children with and without familial risk of dyslexia. A total of 186 children were followed from birth to the age of 6.5 years.
