A computer‐based Pinyin intervention for disadvantaged children in China : Effects on Pinyin skills, phonological awareness, and character reading
2020
Pinyin is an alphabetic script that denotes pronunciations of Chinese characters. Studies have shown that Pinyin instruction enhances both phonological awareness (e.g., Shu et al., Developmental Science, 2008, 11, 171–181) and character reading (e.g., Lin et al., Psychological Science, 2010, 21, 1117–1122) in Chinese children. In the present study, we provided a 3‐week Pinyin intervention with a computer‐based Pinyin GraphoGame to disadvantaged migrant children with poor Pinyin skills. A total of 252 first graders who were children of migrant workers in a large Chinese city were assessed to identify poor Pinyin readers. Fifty‐six 7‐year‐old children with poor Pinyin skills were selected and…
Effects of the Portuguese Graphogame on reading, spelling, and phonological awareness in second graders struggling to read
2020
The interest in computer-assisted interventions to promote literacy has increased over the years. In this study, we developed the Portuguese version of the GraphoGame Fluent and tested its effects on reading, spelling, and phonological awareness. Second graders struggling to read were randomly assigned to two groups: GraphoGame Fluent group (n = 15), which received a computer-assisted remedial reading intervention, or GraphoGame Math group (n = 15), which received a computer-assisted numeracy intervention. An additional, non-playing group, composed by second graders without reading difficulties, was formed (business-as-usual group, n = 15). Results showed clear benefits of GraphoGame on spe…
Beyond free will : The embodied emergence of conscious agency
2019
Is it possible to reconcile the concept of conscious agency with the view that humans are biological creatures subject to material causality? The problem of conscious agency is complicated by the tendency to attribute autonomous powers of control to conscious processes. In this paper, we offer an embodied process model of conscious agency. We begin with the concept of embodied emergence – the idea that psychological processes are higher-order biological processes, albeit ones that exhibit emergent properties. Although consciousness, experience, and representation are emergent properties of higher-order biological organisms, the capacity for hierarchical regulation is a property of all livin…
Brain responses to speech sounds in infants and children with and without familial risk for dyslexia
2015
Dyslexia, a specific reading disability, runs in families. Therefore, the risk for a child to become dyslexic increases multifold if reading difficulties occur in the family. One risk factor for dyslexia is a deficit in speech perception. Using EEG, speech sound discrimination was found to be more demanding than non- speech discrimination in typical readers in Study I. In Study II, in children with dyslexia in 3rd grade, enhanced brain responses were observed and found to be associated with better performance in reading accuracy, spelling accuracy and phonemic length discrimination tasks. The brain responses of the most accurate readers in the dyslexia group originated from a more posterior…
Fiktiivisten mielten tietoisuus ja tiedostamaton Jaakko Yli-Juonikkaan romaanissa Vanhan merimiehen tarina
2015
Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani fiktiivisten mielten tietoisuutta ja tiedostamatonta kognitiivisen narratologian työkaluja käyttäen. Tutkielmani lähtökohta on oletus siitä, että todellisista mielistä tuotettua tutkimustietoa on hedelmällistä soveltaa fiktiivisten mielten tutkimukseen. Samalla tiedostan, että kaunokirjallisuuden logiikka eroaa monin paikoin todellisten mielten logiikasta, eivätkä fiktiiviset mielet siksi ole täysin rinnastettavissa todellisiin mieliin. Kohdetekstini, Jaakko Yli-Juonikkaan romaani Vanhan merimiehen tarina (2014) on kokeellinen teos, joka käsittelee tietoisuuden kysymyksiä kyseenalaistamalla vakiintuneita (niin kirjallisuutta kuin todellisuuttakin) koske…
Spoken Language Development and the Challenge of Skill Integration
2019
The development of phonological awareness, the knowledge of the structural combinatoriality of a language, has been widely investigated in relation to reading (dis)ability across languages. However, the extent to which knowledge of phonemic units may interact with spoken language organization in (transparent) alphabetical languages has hardly been investigated. The present study examined whether phonemic awareness correlates with coarticulation degree, commonly used as a metric for estimating the size of children's production units. A speech production task was designed to test for developmental differences in intra-syllabic coarticulation degree in 41 German children from 4 to 7 years of a…
From abugida to alphabet in Konso, Ethiopia
2019
Abstract This study examines the interplay between phonological awareness and orthography in Konso, a Cushitic language in Southwest Ethiopia. Thirty-two adults reading the Konso abugida but with minimal exposure to alphabetic literacy completed an orally administered phoneme deletion task. The responses were then examined using the minimal edit distance hypothesis (Wali, Sproat, Padakannaya & Bhuvaneshwari, 2009) as a framework for the analysis. The results suggest that the difficulty of a deletion was related to the way the phoneme was represented in the Konso abugida. Content-based error analysis of the incorrect responses gave indications of how Konso abugida readers’ processing of …
Relationships and linguistically sensitive teaching : Developing teacher practicum at Åbo Akademi University
2020
Project “Linguistically sensitive teaching in all classrooms” (Listiac) aims to make an impact on initial teacher education systems in Europe through action research. In line with European policies, the seven partner countries including Finland, Spain (the autonomous Basque country and Catalonia), Belgium, France, Slovenia, Lithuania and Portugal work together in providing competences and skills needed for handling linguistic diversity in our schools. Diversity education has been regarded nearly everywhere as an isolated ‘add-on’ course or study module (EC 2017). Thus, it has remained insufficiently mainstreamed as an integrated component of teaching practice. Listiac addresses this imbalan…

Kielitietoisuusvalmennukset ammatillisessa koulutuksessa – KIELO-hankkeen kokemuksia
2020
Opetushallituksen rahoittama KIELO – kielitietoinen ohjaus ammatillisessa koulutuksessa ja työelämässä -hanke on kukoistanut jo yli puolitoista vuotta. Hankkeeseen osallistuvat Aikuiskoulutus Taitaja, Business College Helsinki, Careeria, Haaga-Helia Ammatillinen opettajakorkeakoulu ja Luksia, Länsi-Uudenmaan koulutuskuntayhtymä. Hankkeen alkuvaiheessa noin vuosi sitten Kieli, koulutus ja yhteiskunta -verkkolehdessä julkaistiin Tuija Arolan ja Marianne Sepän artikkeli kielitietoisuudesta ammatillisessa koulutuksessa. Nyt kerromme, mitä tuloksia hankkeessa on saatu aikaan ja annamme suosituksia tulevaisuuden kehittämistyöhön liittyen kielitietoisuuteen ammatillisessa koulutuksessa. publishedV…
